Last week I celebrated the humble potato quite by accident.  Let me explain.  I found myself at a local bakery to get honey butter (yes I’ll cook my way through this book but I can’t be bothered to mix honey and butter together), and I simply had no choice but to get some fresh bread.  Cracked pepper swiss to be exact.

So now I had a whole loaf of Fancy Bread that I needed to figure out what to do with, other than the general direction of “eat it” obviously.  So I got some deli chicken and ham, only it was late at night and the deli was closed, so they only had pre-packaged bags of the fancy deli ham, the sort that tastes of despair.  So now I had things to make a sandwich, might as well make some soup to go with!

Cheesiest Potato Soup from Ferelden!

Difficulty: 2/5.  I would rate it as more difficult if I’d grated my own cheese, simply because I absolutely hate grating cheese, but I was lazy and bought pre-shredded cheese.  I did have to bust out my newly acquired Antivan Crow blender (it’s a Ninja for anyone still confused by my ongoing blender saga), and it performed quite nicely.

Ingredient cost/accessibility: 2/5.  Good sharp cheddar (not the store brand dry little shreds) is a little pricier than some cheese, but still very common in the scheme of things. 

Taste: 4/5.  This recipe reminds me a lot of a beer cheese soup I’ve made a couple times before, which I have to say I like a bit more than this one, but this is a close second.  It’s a cheesy potato soup, what’s not to love?  I did substitute the cayenne for smoked paprika because I can barely handle any spice, and this amount of pure unadulterated cheese was already going to be a Bad Idea, so I wanted to soften the blow with a smoky flavor rather than spice.  Totally the right call for me, but you do you of course.   Also, full disclosure guys... I added bacon.  Like, a whole pack of bacon.  I chopped it up and fried it until crispy, removed and set aside, sautéed the onion in the drippings and made the soup as directed, took the picture, then added the cooked bacon back in.  #no regerts. 7/5 with bacon.

Suggested pairing: Since this reminds me so strongly of the aforementioned beer cheese soup, this really put me in the mood for a beer.  Any refreshing beverage would be great though.  And of course the fancy bread sandwiches I made to go with the leftover soup throughout the week.

Suggested pairing: Alistair/Anyone.  Because we all know his OTP is Alistair/Cheese <3

But oh we’re not done!  Because I can’t accurately estimate how many cups of diced potato a whole potato will produce, I ended up with an extra largish potato and a half already peeled and ready to go.  I hate wasting food and I realized that I not only had extra potato, but that sliced fancy ham as well, so what better time than to whip up Anderfels Ham and Scalloped Potatoes!

I’m sorry guys, there was just no way I could make a pile of scalloped potatoes look sexy.  They were saucy and greasy and not terribly photogenetic, but incidentally it was these very same qualities that made them taste pretty sexy.

Difficulty: 2/5.  Simple enough that I could make this completely on the fly with zero prep when I realized my sudden potato abundance.  I guess it depends on how comfortable you are with making a rue though.  I could make one in my sleep I’ve made so many, so this was no big deal.  I will say it needed about a half an hour more cooking time than the book said, even with my over enthusiastic oven.

Ingredient cost/accessibility: 2/5.  In general I tend to resent how expensive deli sliced lunch meat is, having grown up on the cheap stuff, but you only need a few slices so it’s not too bad.  I would definitely recommend springing for a quality ham.  My favorite part was the layer of ham at the bottom that got almost kind of crispy against the pan, yuuum.  Though I did make my first substitute of necessity/convenience during this DA cooking project when I was in the middle of making the soup and decided to make this too, around midnight mind you because I work nights and am an actual vampire, and the only thing I didn’t have was Gruyère cheese.  It’s apparently a type of Swiss cheese, which of course I didn’t have either, but since it only needed to be sprinkled on top and wouldn’t affect much I just used parmesan and called it good.  And verily it was good.

Taste: 5/5.  I just had a little when I made the soup to try it fresh and saved the rest for leftovers, mostly because I simply could not consume any more cheese in one sitting and not die.  I wasn’t super impressed at first.  I left the cayenne in this recipe and I was predictably like “waaah it’s spicy”.  But after letting it sit in the fridge and the flavors had mingled and I reheated with a bit of cream to keep it from getting dried out, holy Maker this was soooo good!  I’ve only ever had scalloped potatoes from a box, and now I can never go back again!  I ended up enjoying this even more than the soup!

Suggested pairing: Same as the soup, beer or pop/sparkling water, something refreshing to cut the richness.

Suggested pairing: Like I say, this is not a sexy food... so Blackwall.  Oh buuuurn!!!!!!

And last but not least, because I’m a complete lush, the Apple Ginny from Ferelden.

Difficulty: 4/5.  Not difficult at all in theory, but damn it all if the honey didn’t want to stick to the shaker rather than end up in the actual drink.  So frustrating!  Maybe I should make some honey simply syrup...

Ingredient cost/accessibility: 2/5.  Just gin in this one, I used Wild Roots and would recommend any of their line of alcohol.  The apple juice, lime and honey shouldn’t be too difficult to find.

Taste: 5/5.  I know I said I wasn’t the biggest gin fan, but my mind has officially been changed!  This is so good, it’s honestly one of my favorite cocktails now.  It’s sweet but the gin is still present, and it’s super easy to drink.  

Suggested pairing: I have somehow headcannoned that gin is Fenris’ spirit of choice, when he isn’t drinking wine of course, and we all know his fondness for apples.  And with the honey... Fenders <3

No matter how many times Dimtiri had asked him, no matter how many times the Knights of Seiros asked him, no matter who asked him, Ashe would not become a knight. It was something that he wanted to be since he was a child. Even throughout the time as a student in Garreg Mach he wanted to become one. But he threw out that dream, leaving his younger sister to fill his role as the new successor of House Gaspard. No one knew why he gave up his dream other than he just gave it up.

Ashe looked at the building in front of him. With help from his sister, he was able to open inn. He walked in, heading straight to the kitchen. He tried to remember all of the recipes that Dedue gave him. He remembered one of them. The one that he made the day he rejoined the Blue Lions Army. It was a Duscur fish recipe. He took a large skillet and heated up oil. Ashe added in the garlic until the kitchen smelled of it.

Dedue walked up to the building, reading the sign that says 'Celosia.' He smiled softly as he walked up to the door. He gave it a light knock. Ashe looked up, peering through the windows. He smiled and walked over to the door, letting him in. Dedue's smile grew bigger when he smelled the inn of cooked fish, the many spices, and tomatoes. He knew it was one of the recipes he taught his boyfriend.

"It smells wonderful," Dedue said.

"I've been cooking one of the fish recipes you've taught me." Ashe smiled.

Dedue kindly smiled back. Ashe's smile was kind and warm. It felt as the sunshine was warming his face.

The smell got stronger as the two made their way back to the kitchen.

"I've only been cooking for about twenty-five minutes," Ashe said.

"It shouldn't be much longer," Dedue replied.

He looked at what he had already done. Ashe had the fish fillets out, that was currently unseasoned, and the skillet full of cumin, onion powder, paprika, chicken broth, and other ingredients. The ex-archer held up the spoon up to allow him to taste the sauce. By the sound that escaped his lips, it tasted good. Dedue leaned over and added a little more paprika. Ashe stirred the seasoning into the skillet.

As Dedue seasoned the fish, Ashe started to hum. The knight tried to hum along, only hitting a couple of notes at a time. Ashe started to hum a little louder in hopes that he could join him. Dedue was able to join him and the two started to sing a little song together.

Dedue covered both sides of the fish with paprika, salt, and pepper before placing it in the skillet and let Ashe covered it with the sauce that he was stirring. Ashe left the rest to Dedue. He covered the fish fillets and kept watch over them.

Ashe grabbed a couple of bowls some other ingredients. He started to put flour, sugar, salt, butter, and cold water into one of the bowls. He glanced up and watched Dedue finish up the dish. He saw that he was starting to dance a little. He smirked and walked over to him. He grabbed his boyfriend's hand and the two started to twirl around the kitchen. Laughter filled the inn. The ex-archer gave a big smile up at the knight. Dedue felt his heart swell up with warmth and happiness. He leaned down, pressing his lips against Ashe's forehead. He felt his face become warm as redness stretched across his face. Ashe cupped his face in his into his hand and Dedue let out a soft chuckle.

"W-We shou-should get back to co-cooking," Ashe stuttered.

"Agreed," Dedue said, letting out a low chuckle.

He watched as he walked back to the kitchen. He followed him and put the finishing touches of the dish that they made together. He looked over to Ashe, wondering what he was making. He was trying to distract him from what Dedue had done. He didn't hate it, he was surprised. Dedue walked over and watched him make the dish.

"What are you making?"

"Apple pie. Right now, I'm making the dough."

"Is there anything I can do?"

"If you want, you can peel, core, and cut the apples."

Once Ashe was done with the dough, he placed it in the fridge. He grabbed some other seasonings and walked over to Dedue.

"We will add some brown sugar, flour, ground cinnamon," he listed off.

Dedue added the ingredients as he listed them off. He placed his hand on Ashe's arm as he stirred in the lemon juice. He moved his hand to his hips, turning it into a hug. Ashe smiled as he finished up the pie filling. As they were waiting for the pie crust to set, they ate the fish fillet.

"Wow! This is delicious," Ashe complimented. "You are an amazing cook!"

"You did most of the work."

Ashe blushed lightly.

They sat in silence as they ate. It wasn't only until Dedue asked one pressing question.

"Why did you give up on being a knight? It was something you've always wanted to do."

Ashe sighed. "It feels odd knowing, even though the people of Duscur have been proven innocent, that people still hate you and everyone from Duscur. They expect knights to fight people of Duscur."

Dedue sighed himself. "You shouldn't have let get in the way of you becoming a knight."

"It's alright. I'm opening this inn to help with it. Food is a great way to bring people together! I'm going make this a Duscur inspired inn."

Even though he was a man of few emotions, but he was overjoyed with the words that left Ashe's mouth. "I can help you with the recipes."

"You will? Thank you!"

Ashe told how Dedue how to finish making the pie as he cleaned up the kitchen. He gave him a hug from behind as Dedue was putting the top layer of dough on the pie. He gave him a hug and a kiss before putting the pie into the oven. As they were waiting for it to bake, they cleaned up the inn a little more before it opened tomorrow. It led to them humming and dancing again. Ashe took out the pie and let it cool off for a few minutes before cutting it and handing a piece to Dedue.

He took a bit of it and was pleasantly surprised by the taste. "This is sweet."

"Yeah," Ashe agreed. "The flakiness and crunch of the crust adds a nice texture to it too."

"Agreed."

The two ate the rest of the pie before cleaning the last bit of dishes. Ashe locked up the inn and he grabbed Dedue's hands as they walked away from the building. Tomorrow was the beginning of his new dream.

It only took a whole year, two months and eight days of desperate waiting to see these two pixel men finally together* — yup, on September 10th, 2022 I asked @nervouswizardcycle about the thought of our two boys together (feeling like a complete gonk btw), after Arki went courting around him.

So today, November 17th, 2023 I gift my boy Vijay — finally as NPV thanks to the magical @gloryride once again 💖 (she did it already with Ry to Thy's bday I mean) — to my most beloved oc of my dear friend @nervouswizardcycle.

My first try with them brought me back to Pacifica where I've tried to take shippy pics by using photoshop one year ago to have at least a tiny peak into how they would look next to each other together.

So I went back to the place and captured this set of them enjoying the view towards the ocean while the sun sets as they ravel in a calm moment of togetherness.

I remembered Arki would promise V every holo he would like to have in one of our too many hc talks about the boys and thought I could at least add a sakura holo tree, as holo orcas sadly do not exist.

It makes me incredibly happy to see them together. Arki deserves all the love and now he finally, finally, finally has his copper cutie in his arms! T_T

I intended to make a lil' story like I did with Ry and Thy but I think this scene is better without words as they understand each other without. So I let the pictures speak instead. <3

*Ry got only first because I had to wait for permissions for V's npv why it took so long and to this day I am still waiting – but Glory did a magic trick and fiddled around with some mods so we still could include a few while the rest was just left out, as it only is accessoiries anyways. Glory ilu foerver <3
