Movie #1,089 • Part of My JULIA DUCOURNAU Director Focus
This is, of course, a landmark film because it opened our eyes to the plight of vicious hazing within the French veterinary school industry. It's also a movie how a college-aged daughter never went the pool or beach with her dad, not even one time in her entire life.
You can drop the audience into a world with little to no context and your movie can work, sometimes to greater effect even (I'm seeing this with fellow French director Claire Denis right now). But when your film is draped with such heavy-handed metaphors, or at least the glaring vision that "that's the idea!", well, there needs to be a bit more set-up, more depth. Outside of a quick scene where Justine's mother complains about a rogue meatball in her vegetarian daughter's food, we don't really glean the gist of this relationship, which — because it is revealed at the very end of the film that she is also a genetic cannibal (?) who had to learn how to not try to eat her husband's torso (???) — is simply bad storytelling. And forget the older sister character, whose every whim and action feels like some forced propulsion to move the plot forward. We don't have a clue as to why she's the way that she is (other than, hey, she's related to Justine!).
The device of cannibalism as a stand-in for coming-of-age in a dog-eat-dog world is both fine/easy to understand and completely convoluted/messy in practice. Ducournau has been compared to Cronenberg ad nauseum and that's obvious and apt. I see some definite parallels in my struggle to fully connect with some of his beloved early work in that they eschew simplicity and strong characters in exchange for WTF shock value and chaotic set-pieces.
But still, it's not a complete failure. Raw is a step forward stylistically and Garance Marillier is compelling in the lead, especially given the flawed material. There's just not enough meat on the bone. Pun intended! Shout-out to this easter egg, though...

Nocturama (Bertrand Bonello, 2016)
Cast: Finnegan Oldfield, Vincent Rottiers, Hamza Meziani, Manai Issa, Martin Petit-Guyot, Jamil McCraven, Raban Nait Oufella, Laure Valentinelli, Ilias le Dore, Robin Goldbronn, Luis Rego, Hermine Karagheuz, Adèle Haenel. Screenplay: Bertrand Bonello. Cinematography: Léo Hinstin. Production design: Katia Wyszkop. Film editing: Fabrice Rouaud. Music: Bertrand Bonello.
Nocturama is a kind of existential thriller in which a group of young people bomb and burn various Parisian landmarks. I use the word "existential" because their terrorism appears to be unmotivated; it's an acte gratuit thatseems to stem from no political or social dissatisfaction. The narrative is elliptical: We watch the members of the group as they cross Paris to assemble at their various assigned targets before we even know where they're going and why. Eventually, there's a flashback that shows their preparatory meeting, but even that supplies only the most rudimentary information: that the explosive is semtex, which has been procured for them an older man named Greg (Vincent Rottiers). Their several missions accomplished, they regroup in a department store that's closed for the night, where they raid the food and wine department, try on the clothes, listen to music, and watch the news, which eventually reveals that their hideout has been discovered. Two of them are missing: One is killed in a showdown with a security guard, while Greg suffers a fate that we learn about in a curious way. The outcome is presented with a cold-blooded detachment. Bertrand Bonello breaks no new ground for the thriller genre, but skillfully plays with the viewer's reactions to the young protagonists, an alternation of censure and sympathy.

Agadir Attractions
Day trips from Agadir into tourist attractions scattered around the Souss Valley and the Anti Atlas regions are the most popular activities tourists embark on here. However, you can’t deny that Agadir’s shoreline and fine sand are just one part of the city’s magnificence. This place might be for the sand, sun, and sea where visitors relax at the beaches, but there are many attractions in Agadir you shouldn’t overlook. Some include Oufella from where you can take in a view and take beautiful photographs, Agadir’s city center, Crocopark (a home that safeguards many Nile crocodiles), and many more. As earlier said, some of the places day trips from Agadir will take you include the Walled Medina of Taroudant, Paradise Valley, Essaouira, Tafraoute, Souss Valley, Souqs of Tiznit, and lots more. With these, you will know that Agadir is filled to the brim in and out of the city center.
