Claire's Choice

In 07x03, we see on screen a small, yet powerful scene from early in An Echo In The Bone:

I...turned the blade and pricked the end of my own thumb with the point. It was amazingly sharp; I scarcely felt it, but a bead of dark-red blood welled up at once. I put the knife into my belt, took his hand, and pressed my thumb to his. "Blood of my blood," I said.

What I *love* about this moment - even more than the deliberate parallel to the blood vow that Jamie and Claire made at their wedding - is that it's Claire who chooses to cut herself, reaffirming her vow.

Because at the altar, she didn't choose to marry Jamie. And Jamie knew it - which is why he honored her with a church wedding, and a nice dress, and the best wedding night he could provide.

Claire didn't expect or choose the blood vow, either - Dougal took care of that part.

I saw Dougal draw Jamie's dirk from its sheath and wondered why. Still looking at me, Jamie held out his right hand, palm up. I gasped as the point of the dirk scored deeply across his wrist, leaving a dark line of welling blood. There was not time to jerk away before my own hand was seized and I felt the burning slice of the blade. Swiftly, Dougal pressed my wrist to Jamie's and bound the two together with a strip of white linen.

So - almost thirty years later, Claire shows Jamie how not only is she yet again recommitting to him, most importantly she CHOOSES him. She chooses to honor him, and their marriage, in this way.

Even after so much catastrophic loss - their reputation, their family, their home. All of which they worked so very hard to build for each other. They shoulder the burden together - they choose to continue, side by side.

Which is why, to me, this vow is so profound.

He knows what she's doing. He holds out his thumb, and honors her choice. Knowing that despite it all, he has her, and she has him, and they will always continue to choose each other.

Today is Day 29: Most hopeful moment

THAT TOUCH in 01x07 “The Wedding” - This is Claire saying, I want you, not because I’m forced to, but because I *choose* to. This one touch changes the rest of the episode - and their entire relationship - because he won’t do anything unless she wants him to. Wants him, period. It gives him - and us - hope.

Together with the incredible shot of Jamie's face all like...oh my God, she may actually feel a fraction of the way I do...

Welcome to the Outlander 31 Day Challenge!

Today is Day 22: Favorite Jamie + Claire kiss

Oh, this is easy.

The kiss at their wedding. Because it was their first one.

It was exactly how I’d pictured it from Book 1. Because Jamie is Claire’s safe place.

More mumbling from the priest, and Jamie bent to kiss me. It was clear that he intended only a brief and ceremonial touching of lips, but his mouth was soft and warm and I moved instinctively toward him. I was vaguely conscious of noises, Scottish whoops of enthusiasm and encouragement from the spectators, but really noticed nothing beyond the enfolding warm solidness. Sanctuary.

Some 33 years later, in Book 7 (An Echo in the Bone), Jamie reflects on this moment - and how Claire is his safe place.

Whether the thought of churches or of Claire reminded him, he remembered another church—the one they had married in, and he grinned to himself at the memory of that. Not a peaceful waiting, no. He could still feel the thunder of his heart against his ribs as he’d stepped inside, the reek of his sweat—he’d smelled like a rutting goat, and hoped she didn’t notice—the inability to draw a full breath. And the feel of her hand in his, her fingers small and freezing cold, clutching at him for support. Sanctuary. They‘d been that for each other then—and were so now.

Outlander 31 Day Challenge: Day 24

Welcome to the Outlander 31 Day Challenge!

Today is Day 24: Favorite Jamie + Claire being silly/adorable scene

This would have to be - hands down - the adorable, amazing Drunk!Jamie scene in 01x12 “Lallybroch.” Why?

- LOVE LOVE LOVE the drunk!violin (nicely echoes the tipsy!violin when Jamie comes down the stairs in 01x07 “The Wedding”)

- Jamie thinks he’s being soooo sneaky when he comes in the door

- Claire is all sassy in a tired, “I can’t believe I married this idiot” kind of way

- Drunk!Jamie has to be asked to speak English - proof that Gaelic is his default setting

- “I had to show him the difference between abuse and discipline” - followed by the butt slap that echoed around the world. The fact that Drunk!Jamie is not-so-subtly referring to his ill-fated attempt to “discipline” Claire, and their conversations about it later at Leoch, shows just how deeply that episode has affected him

- Claire’s adorable reaction to the butt slap - oh no he didn’t!

- “I told him he’d have to answer to the laird of Broch Tuarach. That’s me!” — Seriously Jamie, are you five?

- Wait, wait, oh my God, Claire has actually seen an elephant!!

- And my absolute favorite part of the scene: the head roll. Why sit up when you can just roll all over your understanding, accommodating wife?

"Brianna says that she never had grandparents. I remember when Frank  decided to marry in the spur of moment, Claire asked what of your family, parents , he said they will meet you as Mrs. Frank Randal. What happened to his parents? Never mentioned again."

You're referring to what Frank tells Claire in 01x07 "The Wedding."

For posterity, Frank's parents are Jonathan Edward Randall and Nora Sheffield, as published in the Outlander Family Tree

In the books, we never meet Frank's parents. They're never mentioned - certainly not in the way they are in the series. I think it's safe to presume that they're dead.

So - Brianna's statement is true in Book-verse. And we conveniently never see Mr. and Mrs. Randall in the series...come to think of it, we never hear of them (and have zero reason to even think of them) again.

I had to laugh when Jamie said about [Tom Christie's] church building needing windows, he couldn't get married to Claire till Dougal promised the minister proper windows.

6 years ago today (September 20, 2014), 01x07 "The Wedding" premiered.

Happy anniversary, Jamie and Claire!!

I’ve always adored this split-second shot in 01x07 “The Wedding.”

Jamie is open. Unabashedly hopeful.

This is who I am, he is telling her, as he recounts their wedding day. This is how I honored and respected you today - how I’ll continue to honor and respect you, if you’ll let me.

He is so full of love and admiration, yet he respects her boundaries. Wants her to come to him.

Look at everything I did for you today, he wants to tell her. So proud.

Craving her to reciprocate. Believing here, for a split second, that maybe, just maybe, she will.

Both times Jamie gives Claire something of Ellen’s, he stands behind her. To surprise her, yes.

But both times are also emblematic of where they are in their relationship.

On their wedding night - Jamie gives Claire his mother’s pearls. He stands behind her, to put the pearls on her. Note how he is close to her, yet does not remain close. He is standing, then shifts to sit beside her as he explains to her what the pearls are, and what they mean to him. 

He is seeking closeness with her, through this gift.

Contrast this to the ring he gives her, some 24 years later. Yet again he stands behind her, to surprise her. But this time he crouches down to her level. Almost to embrace her. To literally be at her back, and at her side. To support her. To remain close as he explains to her what the ring is, and how much it means to him. To be close enough to see all of her reactions. Close enough to kiss, and cherish.

For his heart is wide open. She knows just how much she loves him - and he, her.

Both times, the only way Claire can react is with a kiss. To show him just how much she cherishes these gifts - these pieces of himself. To show him just how much she loves him, even if she can’t find the words.
