In a historical undertaking, a consortium of the world's leading experts from @leibnizizw Avantea, @safariparkdvurkralove and @kenyawildlifeservice performed the first ever ovum pick up on Fatu and Najin, the last living northern white rhino on the planet at @olpejeta conservancy in northern Kenya. This procedure, never before performed on any northern white rhinos, could mark that instant when these creatures were brought back from certain extinction. At this very moment, the precious ova are being rushed to Italy where they will eventually be matured and fertilized with frozen northern white rhino sperm to become embryos which could then be transferred into the southern white rhinos who could gestate the embryos. If this new technology is successful, it could bring this critically endangered species BACK FROM EXTINCTION. This has been a ten year journey, sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes sublime as I followed the last northern white rhinos alive on the planet from @safariparkdvurkralove in the Czech Republic to Kenya's @olpejeta back in 2009. Witnessing what was believed to be end of the species with the death of Sudan, the very last male northern white rhino, last year broke my heart into a million pieces. Now, I share the news that these incredible human beings are on the cusp of saving the species. Photo by @amivitale. Fatu, one of the two last northern white rhinos on the planet, is surrounded by her keepers and veterinarian Stephen Ngulu. Partially anesthetized, she is guided gently onto soft sand bedding before being fully anesthetized in order to have eggs extracted so that scientists may undertake IVF and potentially save this ancient species from extinction. This first ever egg extraction, attempted on Fatu and her mother Najin, was a success. Two embryos have been created using the eggs combined with sperm frozen from deceased northern white rhino males. The embryos are now stored in liquid nitrogen to be transferred into a surrogate mother in the near future. The historical milestone was undertaken by an international consortium of scientists and conservationists from @olpejeta @kenyawildlifeservice @leibnizizw #Avantea and @safariparkdvurkralove. For decades the story of the northern white rhinoceros has been a tale of decline. The number of individuals shrank down to only two in 2018, rendering complete extinction as only a matter of time. An international consortium of scientists and conservationists has now achieved a milestone in assisted reproduction that may be a pivotal turning point in the fate of these magnificent animals. Using eggs collected from the two remaining females and frozen sperm from deceased males, they successfully created two northern white rhino embryos. The embryos are now stored in liquid nitrogen to be transferred into a surrogate mother in the near future. I am honored to have helped document this momentous undertaking. In the coming days, we will learn whether the eggs have become embryos. If so, they will be transferred into the southern white rhinos who could gestate the embryos. If all goes according to plan, this undertaking could bring the critically endangered northern white rhino BACK FROM EXTINCTION. This could mark that instant when these creatures were brought back from certain extinction. It was a joint effort by @kenyawildlifeservice @leibnizizw #Avantea @safariparkdvurkralove and @OlPejeta Conservancy. Here, Fatu, one of the two last northern white rhinos on the planet, is gently guided to a soft, sand bedding prior to undergoing a ovum pick up at @OlPejeta Conservancy in Kenya. At this point, she has already received the pre-medication and will shortly receive a top-up medication to be fully anesthetized. The red drape across her eyes helps keep her calm during the anesthesia process. After the retrieval, the precious ova were immediately rushed to Italy where scientists from the Avantea laboratory in Cremona were able to inseminate seven with frozen sperm from two deceased northern white rhino bulls.
