Wow, I was so impressed with this noveI! I was struck by its deep introspection, courageous exploration of loneliness, and somber realism. The protagonist, Lucy Snowe, is a highly perceptive and repressed young woman who, having no better option, stoically faces life’s hardships as a teacher abroad without family, fortune, or exceptional physical beauty. She is an outsider who can acutely observe her world but is constrained from fully participating in it. It is a heartbreaking and dark masterpiece with great psychological insight and beautiful, emotive prose. By the time it was written Charlotte Brontë had lost her five beloved siblings and mother. She died two years following its publication in 1855 at age 38.

The story does have several remarkable coincidences that may be criticized by today’s standards, but I’ve encountered this in other Victorian novels. I read an opinion that postulated classical literature’s influence, in particular the theme of Fate, and religious belief in Providence, both extant in the 19th century, made this device more commonplace.

Note in the picture below, the ‘+’ symbol adjacent to the red wire, this is important to get right! Simply solder the new battery leads to the gold plated pads. A small 3mm hole was drilled in the side of the old cell holder to feed the wires in and through to where the PCB fits. We now purchased a small AAA battery holder for 4 cells and a PP3 style clip with flying leads (all from Maplin if you have one handy). The original cells we had were Varta V500HT 500mAh cells which are standard Ni-MH 1.2V cells attached 4 in series. Now the cells can be removed from the case. Pull this clear and you can see the battery is just held against two gold plated pads. The PCB simply unclips from the small cutout in the middle. Take care with the cells as they could still have some power in them, even if the server disagrees! Lever them out until they are just attached with the leads to the small PCB. The cells are held in with silicone gunk and double sided tape so its fairly easy to prise the lid off and the cells out of their home. Starting in the middle of the long sides is a good place as shown above. Prise a small screwdriver into the edge of the plastic, until you’ve made a hole and then trace around the edge to reveal the cells, but be careful not to go to far in or puncture the cells or insulation. Our first task is to force our way into the cell compartment and remove the plastic lid, this is where it gets destructive, don’t proceed unless you have no further use for the battery pack! Prise open the old battery casing and toss out the old cells, wire in a new lead to some standard Ni-MH AAA cells, and your ready to go… OK, some pictures might help :)īelow then is the item were discussing – its HP part number is 381573-001 or 398648-001 or one of the other vast number of variants, they may have slightly different power ratings, the important one for us is 4.8V Ni-MH, that tells us there are 4 cells internally.Īt first appearance the block is sealed and there is no obvious way to get to the cells, in fact its glued together and covered with a thin plastic sheet. Risks and Different Hazards

Avoiding risks is crucial for one’s survival; the definition of risk “is the probability of suffering from a hazard that can cause injury, disease, death, economic loss, or damage”(p409). Five major types of hazards cause risks to human health. The first major hazard is biological hazards. Biological hazards are pathogens, microorganisms, or other types of organisms that cause diseases. Then there are chemical hazards, which are harmful chemicals that can be found and our food, products, water, air, soil . Then, there are natural hazards which are things like earthquakes or tornadoes. Cultural hazards consist of things like an unsafe working environment, poverty, and criminal assault. The final major type of hazard would be lifestyle choices like smoking cigarettes or not having enough exercise(p409).

  To understand biological hazards we have to understand the difference between The different types of infectious diseases and how they’re spread. An infectious disease is a disease caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, or a parasite. Bacteria is a ‘‘single-celled organism that can multiply on its own” (p410). Viruses are pathogens that invade cells and take over the genetic machinery of the cells to spread through the body, some examples of viruses are the flu or AIDS. Finally, a parasite is an organism that lives on or inside another organism while it feeds on it. Then there are transmissible diseases and non-transmissible diseases; non-transmissible diseases cannot spread from one person to another(p410). An outbreak of an infectious disease in an area or a country is called an epidemic. One of the biggest viral killers is the flu virus and influenza. Both the flu and influenza or transmittable diseases that can be shared by body fluids or airborne droplets. The next viral killer would be human immunodeficiency viruses, better known as HIV. HIV on the other hand is transmitted by having unsafe sex, or the sharing of needles by drugs users. The third-largest viral killer would be hepatitis B or HPV. This virus damages our liver and it spreads the same way through unsafe sex. A few other viruses that cause a lot of deaths are Ebola, West Nile virus, Zika virus(p413). Scientists have concluded that one of the best ways to prevent infectious diseases would be the immunization of children.

When it comes to toxic chemicals three major types have major risks. The first one is carcinogens which are types of radiation that can cause cancer. The next chemical toxin would be mutagens which is another form of radiation, but it also includes chemicals. Finally, the last type of toxic chemical would be Teratogens. Turn on surgeons are chemicals that can cause harm to fetuses which can later cause birth defects.

  Avoiding risk involves risk analysis, which is identifying hazards in their possible associated risks. There are ways of evaluating and reducing risk for making our lives healthier and with a bigger probability of living a longer life. The first would be comparing risk and asking ourselves is it worth it or is it safe. The next step would be questioning how willing we are to accept the consequences of that specific risk. The third step would be evaluating the risk itself in searching up the results from that risk. Finally, the last stop will be asking yourself if you have any control in the next decision for a risk.

  On average humans produce 4.5 pounds of waste per day but there are ways that we can reduce that weight. In your category of waste is solid waste which is discarded material people produce; then there’s industrial solid waste which is always produced by mines. The combination of both solid waste and thanks produced by homes is called municipal solid waste. However, it’s important to point out that 53% of our MSW goes to sanitary landfills, 34% of it goes into recycling, and 13% of it goes into incineration. Unfortunately in less developed countries, most people's MSW ends up open in dumps where people usually live. The way we can deal with MSW is waste management, waste reduction, and integrated waste management. These focus on controlling waste and producing less waste. The way we do this and said in the textbook is using the “four rs”(p542);  which, would be refuse, reuse, reduce, and recycle. Some ways that we can integrate waste management in our lives is by following the “four rs”, buying things that are reusable and recyclable, avoiding disposables such as plastic utensils, and renting or borrowing secondhand items. A “low waste economy” (p558) would be the ideal way to evoke the idea of reuse, reduce, recycle. And the way to promote this idea would be that polluters should pay for the wastes they produce and understand that when you throw something away it doesn’t disappear. And I think if we promote this idea then companies could come up with new environmentally beneficial ways to produce the products and “ throwaway’’(p554) they are products. It’s difficult to view a solid waste of something that has aftermath after we no longer use it, but we need to understand that our waste and actions have an effect on our environment and other people.
