It’s Title IX Tuesday! So, what is Title IX?

I am so glad that PaceUEndRape and that The Ungovernables exist. I’m glad that students are speaking up about the injustices that they face dealing with sexual violences and Title IX. I love those flyers that were created for the walkout. They are beautiful.
When I was a student at Pace, I wasn’t allowed to talk about what happened, because of the No Contact Order. If the school found out that I was telling people about the other student who raped me, they would have taken my dorm away from me. The school said I could get an emotional support dog when I asked, so I adopted Dolly. She lived with me in the dorms. When students asked me why I had her, I said “I have depression, anxiety, and PTSD.” I was very open about all of that. I just couldn’t say “I have her because of the investigation Pace University forced me into dealing with the rape that happened on campus and now my anxiety is even more crippling than ever.” I created my “Post-Rape Doll” for my mixed media art class and show cased it in a student show as my way to silently protest the school. At some point I learned how to report the school to the OCR, but that took a while. I knew that students were doing that with more and more schools, like Columbia University. I just didn’t know HOW to do it. An interview on the radio taught me how to report a school to the OCR. I did it that night.
I did literally every single thing that I could do.
I reported the school to the OCR. I reported the school to Clery. I had 2 separate investigations going for Pace University. I had an interview with Huffington Post, to tell the world about what happened. I spoke at City Hall about what happened at Pace University, in front of all sorts of politicians. I even sued the university when I found a lawyer who took my case. He and his team fought so hard for me, but Pace continued to victim blame me, and refused to settle. The lawsuit went nowhere. I was no longer living in their dorms and I was no longer going to attend that school, so nothing was holding me back. I wanted the school to change. I want all schools to change. I wanted justice for how they treated me. I wanted them to answer for it. But that didn’t happen.
I am so tempted to contact the OCR and be like, “Pace University told you that they made changes, but look here, their current students say otherwise. They WALKED OUT. They are being mistreated just like I was.” My investigation is over, they have made that very clear to me in their closing letter to me. Anything else that Pace does or doesn’t do has nothing to do with my case, and yet, it does, because if Pace got out of receiving punishment for having made changes that don’t actually exist, then they aren’t keeping up with their end of the bargain. The Department of Education does not care about that.
Students must continue to get angry. To walk out. To protest. To post things online. It’s the only way to remind people that there are no positive changes being made in the school.

#PaceUEndRape is so proud to have participated in the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk for suicide prevention. Survivors of rape are 4x more likely to attempt suicide than non-crime victims are. If we want to support survivors, we need to support their mental wellness. #pacewalksfor #pacewalk17 #PaceUNYC

So proud to have our #PaceUEndRape members and allies, Jessica Halee, Alexis Collins, and Emily Patterson, advocate for @plannedparenthood! Without PP, communities all over the country would be left without basic health services. We stand with Planned Parenthood. You should too.

No one should hold more power in a relationship. If you love someone, you see them as your equal. Your partners shouldn't be "lesser than" you.
