Gender-Specific Differences of Dental Emergency Patients and the Use of Antibiotics: A 4-Year Retrospective Study

Oral Health Prev Dent 18 (2020), No. 2  (01.04.2020) Open Access ORAL HEALTH, Page 263-269, doi:10.3290/j.ohpd.a44037

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of dental emergency patients with special regard on gender-specific differences related to the utilisation and use of antibiotics. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of all patients who presented to the emergency service of a university hospital in from 2010 to 2013 was performed. Demographic data, diagnosis, conducted treatment and the prescription of antibiotics were recorded and further analysed. Results: Altogether, 16,296 patients visited the emergency service. Of these patients, only one-fourth (25.7%; n = 4185) suffered from a diagnosis with urgent treatment needs. Gender-specific differences were found in the reason of visit. Males presented significantly more often with severe diagnoses, like abscess or trauma. Females presented significantly more often with non-urgent diagnoses, not directly connected to oral hygiene habits, like temporomandibular disorders (TMD), denture sore or dolor post extractionem. Moreover, an overuse of antibiotics was found among emergency patients, with every fifth patient (20.2%; n = 3291) being prescribed an antibiotic. Conclusion: Better public education on dental emergencies and constant updates for dentists about the use of antibiotics in dental emergency care is necessary to secure adequate medical supply for severe dental emergencies and to avoid an inappropriate use of antibiotics.

The Universe (Lin x Reader) Soulmate AU Platonic

WC: 4185 (I don’t think I’ve ever written a one shot this long before)

A/N: I’m basing this off of a fic I read a little bit ago that had this same AU. I thought the idea was great so I wrote my own fic with it. For clarification, Writing will always be italicized, and Lin’s will always be bolded. I’m really proud of this one!

When Lin turned 20, he received a notebook in the mail. It was red and spiral bound, looking pristine as notebooks of the same kind did when you first bought them. This notebook wasn't for the countless lectures left in Lin's college career. Instead, it gave him a form of communication with his soulmate. The pages were blank, meaning Lin had turned 20 first. There was no way of knowing who was on the other side until they were in possession of their own notebook.

Lin sat down with his nicest pen and wrote the first entry.

Dear Soulmate,

Looks like I'm the first to turn 20, though I can't wait to make your acquaintance. I don't know how this works, since I’ve never had a soulmate notebook before. Then again, neither have you so how are either of us to know what is the right or wrong way to do this? I guess I'll start by just telling you about myself.

My family is Puerto Rican, and consists of my sister, my parents, and myself. I've lived in the same neighborhood my whole life, and I love it so much I'm writing a musical about it. I guess I should mention that I write musicals. I also make mixtapes. When you finally see this, I’ll make you a mixtape if you want. I assume you like music, otherwise we wouldn’t be soulmates. Or would we? I don’t know how this works. Have I said that?

I can’t wait to learn more about you!

Lin knew the rules. You weren’t allowed to say your address, your phone number, or anything that would allow the other person to find you by looking you up. The only thing you were allowed to say was your first name, trusting The Universe would bring you together when the time was right. It always happened eventually. If you disobeyed the rules, the government would confiscate your notebook and burn it. Then you would never find your soulmate, so most people tried to avoid breaking the rules.

Every night, Lin would write an entry describing his day to his soulmate. After two years of entries ranging in length from a paragraph to a page, he finally got a response.

The note was in pencil, scribbled onto the page in unique handwriting, the handwriting of Lin's Soulmate.

Dear Lin.

I'd apologize for being 2 years behind, but I didn't control when I was born so tough luck. Thanks so much for the daily updates, I spent all afternoon reading them. Do you ever sleep? Seems like you're a workaholic, but maybe I'm just making assumptions. I don’t know how this works either, so I guess I’ll just tell you about myself.

My favorite color is green, I have a cat that’s so fat I can barely pick him up, I eat peanut butter like it’s my job. That would be a really cool job, I’m not gonna lie. It would pay for all the peanut butter I eat. My for real job is as a barista at a local coffeeshop, but I don’t like coffee. I really like Christmas an abnormal amount, but my family isn’t religious. I just like the commercial happiness of it. Gift giving is my jam. I’m currently in college and I have a fridge in my room but it’s always empty. Whether it’s because I eat all my food as soon as I buy it or because I don’t buy food that goes in the fridge, the world will never know. I’m sure we’ll get to know more about each other through this notebook, but I think this is good enough for now.

Lin was ecstatic. After two years of watching his friends communicate with who was destined to be the love of their life, Lin had finally communicated with his own. He wrote two whole pages of response that night, waiting for a reply.

Unfortunately, his reply didn't come until the morning. A simple Sorry I fell asleep graced the page. Lin watched in awe as letters appeared on the page next to the apology.

I stand by what I said before. You’re definitely a workaholic. I don’t really like writing, if I’m going to be completely honest. I’m going to draw you a picture of my facial expression instead. On an alien.

But if you’re so worried about not knowing if we’re right for each other, let’s just take this slow.

I hate the people who jump right into relationships with their soulmates. I have a friend who turned 20 four months ago and she and her soulmate have already planned their wedding. I’m invited, so are you.

Well I guess I need to find a tie. And I promise I’ll wait five months to plan our wedding. Lin paused for comedic effect. Just kidding, like I said, we can take it slow. We can wait until we meet in person, we could wait until after that even. Don’t worry, we have a lifetime together.

You say that like it’s a good thing, wait until you really get to know me. Lin could tell from (Y/N)’s joking manner that the serious conversation was over and they were all good.

They continued to write to each other every day, but unlike many people they both knew who wrote like pen-pals, Lin and (Y/N) wrote as if they were having a conversation over an instant messenger. The only exception to this would be late at night, when Lin was working on writing music. (Y/N) would usually be asleep (she did that a lot) so Lin would combat any writer’s block he had by writing about anything and everything for her to read in the morning.

Senioritis is hitting me hard this morning Lin scribbled on a fresh page, writing the date in large numbers at the top.

Same Lin laughed at (Y/N)’s response, glancing at the time on his phone and knowing she probably just woke up so her brain wasn’t functioning well yet.

Lin heeded her advice, grabbing his backpack and dashing out of his dorm room. When he got to class he slid into his seat just as the professor was about to begin the lecture. Lin pulled out a pen, then unzipped his backpack. The only thing there was a piece of sheet music. Lin remembered taking his notebook for notes out at home, where it was probably sitting on his desk. The only thing Lin had with him at this moment in time was his Soulmate notebook on the table in front of him. Sighing, Lin clicked his pen.

Lin had to stifle a laugh as he scrambled to catch up on the notes. As he wrote about the history of theater, (Y/N) would circle things he wrote with her pencil (always pencil for her, always pen for Lin) and add her own commentary. Sometimes she’d make jokes or puns, sometimes she’d draw a doodle. Sometimes she’d make up her own facts that were obviously untrue but much more entertaining than the monotonous lecturer in the front of the room.

“But we’re not normal. It defies everything in The Universe that I’m in love with you and not her, yet here we are.” Vanessa was silent.

Lin felt guilt wash over him, even though the scenario was just theoretical. He held Vanessa tight in his arms that night, his soulmate notebook abandoned on the counter.

“Hi everyone. In case you didn’t know, Vanessa isn’t actually my soulmate. Her soulmate tragically passed away, and I still haven’t met mine. (Y/N) has written a very lengthy speech for me to read on her behalf, and if I don’t she will know and probably murder me in my sleep if we ever meet. So here goes,” Lin took a breath and was about to start reading when he heard a “Wait!!” come from one of the back tables. He looked up, noticing a girl around his age walking towards him, bumping into chairs, tables, and people, apologizing to everything she accidentally hit. She was wearing a blue dress, and in her hands she was tightly clutching a tattered, thick, notebook.

“Since I’m here I think I can read the speech myself,” she said as she approached where Lin was standing, giving him a giant grin. He somehow found himself by her side and enveloped her in a hug.

“I thought you would never show up,” he said.

“Funny how The Universe can work things out. Now can I read my speech?” She asked, a twinkle in her eye that Lin recognized only from pictures of himself. Lin nodded, gazing at her in awe as she began.

“Lin is by far the strangest human being I have ever known. And that’s why I love him….”

Over the last 30 years, scientists calculate we have lost 50 per cent of the world’s coral reefs to coral bleaching and man-made causes. Worse, without direct action, coral reefs could become extinct inside 80 years.

Oris, which is on a mission to bring Change for the Better, supports a number of nonprofits working to secure the future of our oceans. This year, we’re partnering again with Coral Restoration Foundation, a Florida-based organisation that has become the world’s leading expert on coral restoration.

Earlier this year, Oris released the first Oris Carysfort Reef Limited Edition, a 50-piece limited edition gold version of the Aquis GMT diver’s watch, to raise funds and awareness for the foundation. Now, Oris is releasing a second piece in stainless steel, limited to 2,000 pieces and also produced in support of the foundation (see below).

Why? While they cover just 1 per cent of the Earth’s surface, coral reefs support at least 25 per cent of all marine fish species. In turn, these sustain the health of our oceans, which produce 70 per cent of the world’s oxygen. Our planet depends on their survival.

They also contribute hugely to the world’s economy. It’s estimated that coral reefs have a global value of close to $10 trillion.

‘Coral reefs are a critical part of a healthy ocean and provide essential ecosystem services,’ says Martha Roesler, Coral Restoration Foundation’s Chief Development officer. Hear her story on page 6.

Despite the damage, there is hope. Coral Restoration Foundation is returning life to Florida’s Carysfort Reef

Oris is delighted to continue its support  of Coral Restoration Foundation. Based in Florida, the foundation has developed restoration methods that have been adopted by enterprises around the world, including the Reef Restoration Foundation, which Oris partnered with last year for the Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition III.

Oris began working with Coral Restoration Foundation in 2014 as part of its mission to bring Change for the Better. That year, the organisation’s founder, Ken Nedimyer, was recognised as Oris’s Sea Hero of the Year and given a grant towards the foundation’s work.

The first watch collaboration followed in 2017 and proved to be a huge success in raising funds and awareness for the foundation. Oris is thrilled to be able to step up its support again for the organisation’s vital work with the launch of the Carysfort Reef Limited Edition.

The name Carysfort is taken from the iconic Carysfort Reef, a coral reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary near Key Largo, Florida. Carysfort is part of the Florida Reef Tract, which is the third largest barrier reef in the world and the only barrier reef in the USA. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was the epicentre of the early recreational dive industry.

Over the last 40 to 50 years, the reef has been severely degraded and coral populations in the Keys have declined by around 98 per cent.

But all is not lost. The foundation has been working to restore Carysfort Reef since 2014 and has already made significant strides towards securing its future.

So far, the foundation has returned nearly 25,000 corals to the reef through its outplanting programmes, a figure that will rise to at least 30,000 by the end of 2020.

‘Humanity has never before faced the extinction of an entire ecosystem,’ says Martha. ‘But despite the ongoing threat to coral reefs from climate change, there is still hope.’

It’s a remarkable achievement, and the result of incredible vision, energy and commitment. Oris is proud to join the foundation in celebrating a golden moment.

A climate of change

Coral Restoration Foundation’s Martha Roesler explains the foundation’s work and how together we can bring change

First, tell us a bit about yourself. My name is Martha Roesler and I’m Chief Development Officer at Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF). I’ve been working in conservation for over 20 years and I joined the foundation in 2014. My job is to build partnerships and raise funds and awareness.

What is Coral Restoration Foundation? CRF is a non-profit and the world’s largest coral reef restoration organisation. We’re headquartered in Key Largo, Florida, and we’re working on reversing the damage done to the Florida Reef Tract. We run programmes to restore the reef and to conserve the coral species that once thrived on it.

Why the focus on Carysfort? Carysfort Reef is one of the world’s most iconic coral reefs. It was the epicentre for the early recreational dive industry and a premier fishing destination for US presidents. And it was where the world’s first underwater colour photograph was taken. Carysfort was once the crown jewel of the Florida Keys reef system, but its health has severely degraded since the 1970s. There��s now a critical need for coral restoration to restore Carysfort to a healthy, thriving reef system.

How important are coral reefs? For 500 million years, reef ecosystems have persisted in shallow seas around the globe, mostly near tropical shorelines along the equator. They are one of the oldest and most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Although coral reefs cover less than 1 per cent of the Earth’s surface, they are home to 25 per cent of all marine fish species. Coral reefs are a critical part of a healthy ocean and provide essential ecosystem services. Over 70 per cent of the oxygen on Earth is produced by the oceans. Coral reefs are important for human subsistence, supporting fisheries that provide protein for billions of people. They form natural barriers that protect shorelines and infrastructure from wave energy and storm surges. Coral reefs are estimated to have a global value of close to $10 trillion USD.

How serious is the problem and what created it? We’re seeing dramatic and negative changes because of climate change. Because of it, sea surface temperatures are rising, ocean acidification is increasing, sea levels are rising, storm patterns and precipitation are changing, and ocean currents are altering. Coral reefs are now experiencing higher ocean temperatures and acidity than at any time in the last 400,000 years.

What’s the worst-case scenario? Coral reefs are now the most endangered ecosystems on the planet. Humanity has never faced the extinction of an entire ecosystem, yet we have lost 50 per cent of the world’s coral reefs in the last 30 years. In 80 years, they could be extinct.

How do you restore coral? We begin by establishing underwater nurseries in coastal marine waters. Corals reproduce in two ways: sexually, through spawning, and asexually through fragmentation. When corals are fragmented, the fragments grow into new genetically identical colonies. These are suspended on underwater Coral Trees, where they grow to a size and maturity that allows them to be outplanted back to the reefs.

How long does this process take? It takes between six and nine months. CRF staff and volunteers regularly visit these nurseries, where growing corals are monitored and cleaned of algae. Once they are ready to outplant, corals are removed from the nurseries and transported to restoration sites. Our team then uses an underwater epoxy to attach the corals to the reef substrate. This year, we’re incorporating  new techniques that will allow us to outplant larger corals onto the reef and restore ecosystem functionality more quickly.

  What kind of scale are we talking about? CRF is returning a huge volume of corals across the tract. In total, we’re working to restore an area over the next three years of 91,850m2. That’s about the size of 17 American football fields.

Can we save the world’s coral reefs? Yes, absolutely. Reef restoration is a longterm investment. But despite the ongoing threat of climate change, there is still hope. 

How can people get involved? Direct ways like donating, fundraising and volunteering their time, and we need people to raise awareness. More than that, together, we need to create what we call a Climate of Change – taking positive actions for the health of our environment. That’s things like reducing your carbon footprint, going plastic free, using reef-safe sunscreen and so on. And by buying the Oris watch!
