Cloud Cult — Alchemy Creek (Earthology)

Alchemy Creek is Cloud Cult’s 12th album. During the late 2010s, the band had taken a hiatus. Their return in 2022 with the album Metamorphosis was an excellent release, leaning into a chamber pop aesthetic with an enlarged cohort of musicians, some playing classical instruments. The same lineup returns for Alchemy Creek: Craig Minowa, singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarist, is joined by violinist Shannon Frid-Rubin, drummer Jeremy Harvey, Shawn Neary playing bass, banjo and trombone, Sarah Perbix, playing keyboard, French horn and trumpet and Daniel Zamzow, playing cello and mandola. An unorthodox contributor to their shows and videos is the live painter Scott West. Together they make music that extols environmental causes, compassion for fellow humans, and catharsis for emotional suffering in the post-pandemic era.

“I Am a Forcefield” is a song that reminds us that our inner child can be a protective force, a reminder of our sense of self. Christopher Robin, leading a band of imaginary friends, battles it out with the demons of aversion in a lyric ripe with metaphor, encouraging those in similar circumstances. Minowa sings full on emo here with Harvey’s strong support on the drums. The rest of the group engages in a repetitive harmonic progression that grows to a roar by the song’s climax, only to slowly recede to give the floor to a final vocal chorus. “Vision in a Field” is a message to a friend carrying similar burdens. The narrator’s suggestion, “lay it down and run like hell.” A similar trope that I particularly liked, “It’s not about the easy days, it’s how you run through the fire.”  Here the band ebbs and flows in intensity, affording Minowa plenty of room to sing but interesting textures to support him.

“As Beautiful As It Hurts” is probably my favorite song on the recording. The video shows Minowa accompanying himself at a well-used, worn upright piano. Strings and French horn also surround his singing, which is distressed with delay. “I Need to Think it's Going to Be Alright” goes the world-weary refrain, and vivid emotional distress assaults the song’s narrator nearly throughout. Finding beauty and hope in the midst of pain, an aforementioned album theme, coalesces in this moving song.

Alchemy Creek is remarkable in that most bands do not find nearly as much songwriting inspiration on their twelfth album. Dare we hope for baker’s dozen?

Laraaji - Celestrana (December 21, 1982)

It's a big weekend for the small town of Lafayette, Colorado! Not only is my band Prairiewolf playing at Cellar West on Saturday ... but the night before, ambient music giant Laraaji will appear at the Arts Hub — with modular synth legend Lisa Bella Donna, no less! Wowza. Will we convince either of these musicians to join the 'wolf for an epic jam?! Probably not. But that would be neat, wouldn't it?

Anyway, to get prepped, I'm enjoying Celestrana, the new age-tastic Manhattan Group W public access cable program that Laraaji hosted back in the 1980s. Numero Group has kindly uploaded several episodes, including this one which features Laraaji’s then-partner and collaborator Vina Devi, who joins him "to discuss crystals and create beautiful improvised music." Ohhhhh yeah.

Laraaji says: A painter will select colors they want to work with, throw things on the canvas, and start finding an emotional direction. In my case, tuning the zither or sitting down at the piano and letting something spontaneously happen is like putting together a “sound-feel” or an “emotional picture” that might suggest a great expanse like a desert or a rainforest, or an expanse of celestial space, or attending a great reunion with ancestors in an open field like a Native American powwow, or in a dance hall where people are just jamming and grooving. So I’ll get these mental and emotional pictures, and the tuning will give me the paintbrush and the colors to paint that image. Many of them are meditative images. My fine-tunings become the language for something that I cannot put into words. Once the tuning is set, I'll let the tuning show me its inner language, and I'll walk a mile in its shoes.

William Petyt (or Petit) (1640/1641 – 3 October 1707) was an English barrister and writer, and a political propagandist in the Whig interest.

Petyt was born in 1640 or 1641 in the village of Storiths, near Bolton Abbey, Skipton, Yorkshire, and educated at the Free Grammar School (now Ermysted's Grammar School), Skipton, and Christ's College, Cambridge. He was admitted as a barrister to the Middle Temple in June 1660, and to Barnard's Inn in June 1661. He was specially admitted to the Inner Temple on 25 November 1664, and subsequently called to the Bar there in February 1671 and made a bencher in 1689. He served as Treasurer (that is, the head) of Inner Temple in 1701–1702.

On 25 July 1689, Petyt was appointed Keeper of the records at the Tower of London by William III, replacing in that position Robert Brady who had made a very effective attack for the Tories on Petyt's The Antient Right of the Commons of England Asserted (1680).[6] Petyt was attacked also from his own side, the Whigs, by Thomas Hunt.

Petyt wrote against the separation of powers, and in favour of Parliament's control of the judiciary. Influential in its time, in particular on John Locke, was a version of "ancient constitutionalism" propounded in the writings of John Sadler, James Tyrrell and Petyt.

Petyt died unmarried in Chelsea, London, on 3 October 1707, and was buried in the west part of Temple Church. In his will he left £50 to the Free Grammar School in Skipton which was used to purchase books for needy students. He also left £200 for the maintenance of alumni of the Free Grammar School who had been admitted as scholars at Christ's College, Cambridge. In addition, he entrusted to his trustees his books and manuscripts together with £150 for buying or building a place to preserve them. Inner Temple Library was enlarged for this purpose, and in 1708 Petyt's trustees deposited his collection there, except for about 2,000 items which his brother Sylvester (1640–1719) took to his home in Yorkshire. Sylvester, who also attended the Free Grammar School, eventually bequeathed to the school the generous sum of £30,000 to form the Petyt Trust, and also books belonging to himself, his brother and friends which became the Petyt Library.

Carson's Paving scheme. ---- (By the Club, Reporter.) Immediately after the chairman had token his seat and called the meeting of the Tinshop Club to order, there was a rap at the inner door. The janitor announced that a chemist was without seeking admission.

"Just the man we want," said the Colonel, "because I propose to take up certain sanitary matters in the near future, and this gentleman, who is an expert in his line, will be of great use to the club. I can recommend him highly. He is a west ender, and I could say more to his credit, but we are not supposed to talk politics here."

The retired plumber wanted to know the difference between a druggist and a chemist, and the Colonel replied that they were different with out a distinction. One drugged you.

The grocer - "And the other makes the dope."

"Then admit him if he can make his dope," remarked the tinman. "A little of it is needed here occasionally."

The chairman gave instructions for the chemist's admission, and he en tered and took his seat amid applause.

SPEAKERS WERE SCARCE. A period of prolonged silence ensued. Members kept gazing about the room looking for speakers, but be none made an appearance. LABOR MEN IN COUNCIL. "Now that you labor men have a representative in the City Council what are you going to do ?" asked the Colonel. "Have you a policy?"

Up jumped the mason, and sighting the Colonel with his index finger, he replied: "Don't worry about the labor man; we'll hear from him in the near future. I can give you a written guarantee that he will do nothing that will tend to retard the growth of the city, nor will be adapt picayune methods. It is time our public men broadened out, and you will find that labor will be in the front in this respect. You asked if we had a policy. We haven't decided on one yet, but we are going to, and when it makes its appearance it will commend itself to the citizens at large. One thing more gentlemen, there will be more labor men in the Council next year than there are now.

The Colonel replied that he was glad to get this information from the mason. The labor men have now an opportunity to do something, and he had no doubt that they would. Labor has become a factor in eivie and state affairs that cannot overlooked. be
