The Battle Against Tool Theft
Join us as we discuss what to look out for and how to tackle this alarming occurrence.
Tumblr media
In the realm of the trade industry, an alarming and unsettling issue looms - the pervasive problem of tool theft. Unfortunately, it's a common occurrence, with statistics revealing that tools are stolen from tradespeople every 17 minutes, as reported by Direct Line. In 2022 alone, tool theft cases across the UK reached a staggering peak of 40,000, accounting for approximately 110 tools stolen every day.
The magnitude of this matter demands our attention as we delve into its impacts, what to look out for, and what important precautions you must take to tackle this.
Impact of Tool Theft
When considering the aftermath of a single act of tool theft, the financial toll becomes starkly apparent. A full replacement cost for all stolen tools can hover around £1,500 - £4,000 or more. Even more shocking results in an analysis by LBC revealed that tradespeople are potentially losing over £100 million in tools! This not only translates to a substantial financial setback but also results in the consequence of earning loss from delays in completing jobs.
Tumblr media
Most Likely to be Stolen
Markeluk.com gives some comprehensive data that shed light on the tools most susceptible to theft as well as how much they cost on average and other important information.
At the forefront, the most frequently stolen tool found was chainsaws, with an average cost of £138. Following closely, were drills and grinders in second and third place respectively, each typically costing over £100. The most expensive stolen tool found was a breaker, costing on average £549. Given the substantial cost,  this piece of equipment is not easy to replace, resulting in a loss of earnings. In this particular study, 41% of tradespeople said their stolen tools were worth over £2,500.
Most Common Theft Scenarios
It is seen that tradespeople’s vans emerge as the primary target for tool theft. A staggering 41% of thefts occurred when their vans were parked at home. Vans parked on-site were also susceptible to theft at 27%, while 19% of participants reported having tools stolen directly from the site they were working on.
Importance of Insurance
Shockingly, only 42% of tradespeople reported having insurance for their tools and equipment, leaving the majority without this crucial protection. The implications are significant, as those without insurance risk finding themselves left without the essentials to complete their jobs should the worst happen, or having to pay for the replacements themselves! For the remaining participants who reported not having tool insurance, 36% felt that it was too expensive and 25% didn’t even know it was available. The remaining  8% felt like insurance was unnecessary.
Precautions
Due to these unfortunate circumstances, finding some additional ways to keep your tools safe is of utmost importance. It was found that 35% of tradespeople take their tools out of their vehicles overnight while 16% reported having a specialist lock on their vehicle in addition to the standard vehicle lock. Others were found to use alarms (25%) or mark their tools (23%) for extra protection.
While these are all good strategies to take when protecting your tools, acknowledging the evolving tactics of thieves is crucial. Taking additional security measures can ensure you a bit more safety and a little less stress when it comes to protecting your equipment.
Smart Security Investments
Here are some additional security measures that you can take to ensure utmost safety of your equipment:
Lockable power tools with apps: Consider investing in these security tools controlled remotely from your smartphone. Even in the unfortunate attempt of theft, your tools can’t be unlocked without your phone, making them worthless to thieves.
GPS trackers: Enhance security by attaching a GPS tracker to your tools. You can activate the tracking app from your phone if your tools go missing and track down the thief! The added risk of being tracked often prompts them to abandon the tools.
Stickers and warning signs: Scare off thieves by adding warning signs to your vehicle. Clearly state that you have GPS trackers and alarm systems and that the area is under surveillance. This adds a layer of intimidation promoting thieves to move on to lower-risk opportunities.
Tumblr media
In the face of the pervasive issue of tool theft among tradespeople, the importance of awareness, preparedness, and the adoption of advanced security measures cannot be overstated. By staying informed and adopting new security measures, we can mitigate the risk of tool theft and create a more secure working environment!

Homemade Cleaning Recipes
Universal Cleaning Spray
Make this homemade all-purpose cleaner to eradicate those hard water stains, freshen up bins, and effortlessly wipe away smudges.
You’ll need:
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup water
Lemon zest strips
Instructions: Combine the ingredients and pour them into a spray bottle. After shaking, let them infuse for a week before using.
Caution: As mentioned by thespruce.com, avoid using acidic cleaners on granite or marble, as they can cause etching.
You can opt for vodka as an alternative to vinegar, which is also better for cleaning softer surfaces like marble or granite, according to oprahdaily.com.
Kitchen Revive
This kitchen cleaning deodorizer can clean anything from counters to appliances, and even the inside of your fridge. It’s also great for removing drain odours!
You’ll need:
4 tablespoons baking soda
4 cups warm water
Instructions: Use the homemade solution above or pour it into your drain to deodorise. For other purposes, simply apply the solution with a damp cloth and wipe gently.
Crystal Clear
To make your windows and mirrors sparkle, use this simple yet effective glass solution recipe.
You’ll need:
2 cups water
½ cup white vinegar
¼ cup rubbing alcohol (70% concentration)
1 or 2 drops of essential oil (optional)
Instructions: Combine these ingredients, pour them into a spray bottle, and shake. Easy!
Tips:
Citrus-based essential oils help the alcohol evaporate quicker, minimizing spots and streaks.
Avoid cleaning mirrors in direct sunlight as the solution will dry too quickly, leaving a lot of streaks.
Fizzy Bathroom Solution
Revitalise and refresh your bathroom with this fizzy toilet bowl solution!
You’ll need:
2 cups baking soda
1 teaspoon essential oil (tea tree, lavender, and pine have disinfecting properties)
Distilled white vinegar
Instructions: Combine the baking soda and essential oil in a container and stir until well combined. Once you're ready to use it, pour the mixture into the toilet bowl, then add an additional tablespoon of baking soda and two cups of white vinegar to make it fizzle. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub and flush!
Anti-Dust Mix
Say farewell to the frustration of spending hours cleaning your entire house, only to find it filled with dust the very next day, with this homemade dust repellent.
You’ll need:
½ cup white vinegar
2 cups water
¼ cup olive oil
Essential oils (optional)
Instructions: Pour ingredients into a bottle and shake until well combined. Before using the spray, wipe the area with a microfiber cloth to lift any dust. Then, spray with the mixture and wipe again.
Bonus Hack
To clean your microwave, put a bowl with ¼ cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of water in the centre and heat for 5 minutes. Then carefully use a cloth to wipe away any stains or splatters. Simple right?

5 Surprising Electrical Safety Tips That Will Shock You!
Don't wait until it's too late to protect your home from electrical hazards! Check out our surprising electrical safety tips to keep your London home protected.
Tumblr media
Did you know that faulty electrics and electrical equipment cause around 350,000 injuries in UK homes every year? If you want to keep your London home safe from electrical hazards, you've come to the right place! We've put together the top 5 electrical safety tips designed to keep your London home safe and sound.
Let's take charge of our electrical safety with these easy-to-follow tips!
Why is electrical safety important? Watt's the Deal?
If you're like most people, you probably have more electrical devices and appliances than available sockets. This is where extension cords and power strips come in handy, but proceed with caution! Overloading can cause overheating, sparks and even fire.
Check the wattage rating of the extension cord and make sure high wattage appliances, like hair dryers or space heaters, are not plugged into the same cord as your computer or phone charger. If you need more sockets, hire a qualified electrician to install additional outlets.
In doubt if your extension cord or power strip has reached maximum capacity? Here's a socket overload calculator by Electrical Safety First to help you figure it out. All you have to do is input the type of appliances you are using, and the calculator will tell you whether it's safe or not.
Don't Let Your Chargers Be the Weak Link: How to Keep Your Home Safe from Electrical Fire
Did you know that charging your devices improperly can be a danger to your home and family? According to the London Fire Brigade, dodgy chargers are one of the top causes of fires in British homes, with over 250 fires caused in London in 2019. When charging your devices, always remember to do it on a hard, flat surface and avoid using a bed or other flammable material. As tempting as it may be, it can have serious consequences!
To keep your home and loved ones safe, always follow the charging protocols, and don't leave your devices plugged in after they've reached full charge. And when you're shopping for chargers, don't skimp on quality! Cheap and unbranded chargers may seem like a bargain, but they often don't meet safety standards. In fact, a study by Electrical Safety First found that over half of the unbranded chargers tested failed basic safety tests, including fire resistance and electrical insulation.
Safety First: The Importance of Registering Your Appliances
Appliances that aren't working properly are like ticking time bombs. Always make sure to register your devices with the manufacturer to prevent an eventual disaster. This ensures that you receive any safety updates or recalls, and also helps you sleep soundly knowing that your appliances won't turn against you in the middle of the night.
But don't just take our word for it! In 2022, 13 general household items were recalled in the UK due to safety concerns. Those who registered their items received immediate notification, while those who didn't were left in the dark about the potential dangers lurking in their homes. Be safe, take a few minutes to register your appliances, and stay one step ahead of any electrical disasters!
Shockingly Easy: Unplug Your Appliances to Keep Your Home and Wallet Safe
Are you guilty of leaving your appliances plugged in when you're not using them? It may seem harmless, but it could be a potential fire hazard. Electrical Safety First advises unplugging any unused appliances and disconnecting those that are fully charged to prevent overheating and reduce the risk of fire. In fact, according to the UK government, 46.5% of electrical fires across the country are caused by the misuse of appliances.
Tumblr media
In addition to keeping you safe, unplugging appliances can save you money. According to Natalia Lachim from Discount Code, “leaving appliances plugged in and switched on can increase your energy use, which in turn can lead to higher bills”.
Keeping your TV on standby can add up to £132 to your annual electricity bill and if you're a video game lover who leaves their consoles on standby, get ready to pay a whopping £1,533 more per year! What about appliances, like fridges, that we can't turn off? Well, help them work smarter, not harder. For example, dusting the exterior and throwing out spoiled food helps your fridge work efficiently and lower your bills.
To further reduce the risk of fires, the London Fire Brigade advises unplugging chargers when the battery is fully charged and avoiding leaving devices continuously plugged in.
Tumblr media
Current Events: Electrical Safety Made Easy
Another way to keep your home safe is by hiring a qualified electrician to regularly inspect your electrical system. They can quickly identify potential dangers, such as outdated electrical systems or faulty wiring, and safely eliminate them with the necessary repairs or upgrades. It's recommended that homeowners get their homes inspected every 10 years, and renters every 5 years, to prevent any electrical mishaps.
Keeping your home safe from electrical dangers is no joke. Faulty electrical equipment and sockets cause approximately 70 deaths in UK homes every year, which is why it's important to take electrical safety seriously and put in place the necessary precautions.
While these five electrical safety tips may surprise you, they are crucial to keeping your London home safe. Remember to always follow the charging protocols, register your appliances, unplug your devices when not in use, and hire a qualified electrician to inspect your electrical system regularly.
Stay safe and take charge of your electrical safety today with Bokafix! We will help you find a registered electrician who can take care of any electrical hazards and keep your home and family safe.

The Art of Decluttering and Organising Your Space
Discover the secrets of decluttering and creating a space of calm and clarity.
Tumblr media
Looking to give your home a fresh start? Then, you’re in the right place! Join us in today’s blog as we set out to transform the way you organise your clutter in a manner that suits you best.
Importance of Decluttering
Why is this transformation necessary, you ask? Truth be told, decluttering is a necessity for all households from time to time. However, it can become a tedious task. And when not dealt with, you’re left overwhelmed by the piles of mess that need to be tidied up and your clutter-free vision goes down the drain. Does that sound like you? Don’t worry; we’ve all been there! In fact, a study mentioned in suzykell.com revealed that cortisol levels skyrocket in individuals who live in cluttered environments, causing maximum stress. That’s why in today’s blog post we’ll introduce various decluttering techniques to ensure you a stress-free experience.
Clearing out your home is not only rewarding for your mental health but is also a great time-saver! A survey by Pixie found that people spend 2.5 days a year on average just looking for lost items. A whopping 60% of people were late to work or school, 49% missed appointments or meetings and 22% even missed flights! Mind you, it was also found that 40% of housework can be reduced with less clutter.
Tumblr media
Decluttering Methods
Now that we’ve given you all the facts, it’s time to present some excellent decluttering methods to ensure you get the best out of tidying up your home. So please - have a seat as you’re about to embark on a journey in the art of dejunking!
1. KonMari Method - Does it spark joy?
Focus on getting rid of items that no longer have any value to you.
Separate all items by category, instead of by room. Then, take one by one and ask yourself “Does it spark joy in my heart?”. If not, then you know it’s time to let go.
Tip: Use this method one category at a time to avoid uprooting your entire home.
2. Becker Method - From one room to another
Start with the easiest, most lived-in areas of your home. The science behind this is that seeing results in those areas will prompt you to notice the benefits of decluttering since you use those areas continuously. Then you’ll be motivated to tidy up other areas too!
Tip: Make sure you are well rested and have enough time to completely sort out your space. You don’t want to give up mid-way in a highly used area and then be left overwhelmed by the mess.
3. Fly Lady Method - Little by little
If you find decluttering draining and fear you’ll burn out mid-way, then this method is for you! Use a timer and declutter in short, fast turns by sorting items into 3 categories - give away, throw away, and put away. Consider if you have used the item recently or if it has any sentimental value. If you have duplicate items then only keep the better one.
Tip: If you find that this method is for you, try and integrate it as a daily or weekly habit. It will save you a lot of time in the long run.
4. Minimalist Game Method - Up for a challenge?
Want to make decluttering a New Year’s resolution? Then take on this challenge! Start on the 1st day of a month and sort 1 item. On the 2nd day, sort out two items, then three on the 3rd, and so on. By the end of a 31-day month, you’ll have dejunked 496 items in your home!
Tip: Make sure to take on this challenge in a non-busy month to stay consistent or else you’ll fall behind.
Ground Rules
Whatever method you decide to use, thespruce.com points out some useful ground rules to adhere to:
20/20 rule: dispose of items you can replace for £20 and under 20 minutes.
80/20 rule: since we use 20% of our items 80% of the time, get rid of the 80% you don’t use often.
5-second rule: while sorting your items, take 5 seconds to remember the last time you used them. If you can’t, then you can get rid of it.
When it comes to decluttering out with the old is the way to go! Just remember, whatever you decide to get rid of, don't just simply throw it away - give it a new home! You can pass it on to a friend or donate it to someone in need. Alternatively, contribute to a greener environment by recycling it.
Tumblr media
With all of these methods at your disposal, you can embark on a journey of less clutter and more clarity! Remember that decluttering extends beyond a neat space; it promotes a clearer mind and a peaceful well-being. Embrace the freedom of letting go!

Landscape Costs for Creating Your Dream Garden
Navigating through budget friendly tips so you can create your unique garden oasis!
Tumblr media
Gardens are like a big empty canvas just waiting to be explored and turned into your very own masterpiece! In the 2021 census, they found out that 87% of homes in the UK have their own gardens. And since so many households have this awesome space, knowing how to make it your own without spending a fortune can be a hidden gem.
Tumblr media
Get ready to sprinkle some magic on those green canvases and let's discover how to make your dream spot without giving your wallet a headache!
Average Prices of Landscaping in the UK
Alright, let's talk numbers. Redoing a small garden with a mid range budget can typically hover around £4,000 to £6,000. If you're looking at a medium sized garden transformation, budget for approximately £10,000 to £15,000. Now, for a large 200 m² garden on a mid range budget could come in at £20,000 to £30,000!
Tumblr media
Think of those numbers as trusty guiding stepping stones and, before we get carried away, remember that these are just estimates. The real budget will depend on a number of factors. So let's look into them!
Landscape Features That Affect the Price
Crafting your dream garden is a bit like a treasure hunt, and the price tag it's a major clue. We've got the importance of size covered: the larger the garden, the bigger the budget. Here are other factors that can affect your landscape budget:
1. Soft vs. Hard Landscaping
Soft landscaping includes flowers, shrubs, and grass. The good thing is, it's friendly on your budget since it needs less labour and materials. On the other hand, hard landscaping involves things like patios, fences, and solid structures. While it might push your budget a bit further, trust us, the visual impact is totally worth it.
2. Picking Your Garden Gems
When it comes to soft landscaping, you have choices ranging from native to imported plants, each option with its own price tag. Also, keep in mind that opting for larger plants can result in a higher cost. Additionally, remember that seasons matter! Blooms tend to be pricier in spring and summer.
Now, shifting to the hard landscaping materials: Concrete and chainlink are simpler and budget friendly options, while natural stone and timber represent more upscale choices, though they might require a bit more money.
3. Prep Work Power
If your garden needs a bit of groundwork, like smoothing out bumps with excavation and levelling, it's time to start filling up your savings. For a bumpy garden, you might end up spending around £30/m², and if you're dealing with a garden on a steep hill, it could step you back a whopping £130/m².
However, if you have the time (and skills) to handle a portion of the prep work before the Fixers arrive, you'll likely reduce your expenses. So, the more you do, the more you save! That's gonna be your secret weapon to dodge extra costs and keep your budget in check.
Extra Budgeting Tips to Make Your Garden Your Favourite Spot
1. Solar Power
Light up your garden with solar powered spotlights. They're easy on the environment (and on your wallet). Let your garden shine without worrying about wiring hassles and high electricity bills.
2. Creative Planters
Who knew a metal colander could become a hanging masterpiece for your plants? Fill it with blooms and foliage, and save on costs while adding charm and uniqueness to your garden. And a colander is just the beginning, your imagination is the limit!
3. Vertical Gardens
Utilise walls or fences with DIY vertical gardens. Turn old shelves or pallets into an herbs and flowers oasis. It's a smart way to grow without losing precious ground space.
4. Affordable Pathways
Every garden needs a path. Start with cost-effective materials like gravel or budget paving stones. You can always upgrade later when the time is right.
5. Plants All Around
A garden is its plants. Prefer choosing native or budget friendly plant varieties, like Azalea and Lavender. It's not about quantity, but the right selection that brings your vision to life.
Your garden is like an unfolding masterpiece, waiting for your personal touch. From envisioning vertical gardens to choosing the right solar powered fixtures, these are the tricks to mastering the art of designing your dream garden without breaking the bank.
As we wrap up this journey, remember the secrets you've unlocked. Balancing soft and hard landscaping, smart material choices and the power of a little DIY groundwork are some of the ingredients of a budget smart garden transformation.
And if you're ready to make your garden dreams a reality, we've got your back. On the Bokafix app, you will find a qualified Fixer to help your landscaping dream come true. Download it now and let your gardening adventure unfold!

The Ultimate Guide to Managing Tenant Repairs and Upgrades on a Budget
Get ready to learn how to handle tenant repairs and upgrades without spending a fortune! We’ll guide you through practical strategies and simple tips to keep your rental properties well maintained on a budget.
Tumblr media
Imagine being able to manage your properties without blowing your budget. In 2019, landlords in the UK were spending an average of 3.1 thousand pounds each year on their portfolios. That’s why we are here to show you how to make every penny count!
Join us as we share budget friendly tips and proactive strategies to manage your tenant's repairs and upgrades with ease. From prioritising repairs to unveiling DIY ideas, we've got you covered.
Emergency Maintenance 101
Prioritising repairs is crucial for the safety and well being of your tenants and the integrity of your property. That’s why emergency maintenance issues like power loss, burst pipes or fires, require immediate attention to prevent further damage and ensure habitability.
So here’s a tip: Always give your tenants a list of trusted vendors for emergencies. By equipping your tenants with this resource, they can take action fast, minimising risks and saving you time and money.
The Scheduled Repair Survival Guide for Landlords
While emergency repairs are crucial, scheduled maintenance is equally important. Regular inspections not only catch problems early but also extend your property's lifespan and provide a comfortable living environment for your tenants.
To avoid such emergencies, it's essential to create a regular maintenance schedule with your tenants, keeping track of seasonal tasks. Here's an idea of what to check on each season:
🌼 Spring: Embrace the season of renewal by focusing on landscape clean up, window washing, setting up the irrigation system, and giving some attention to the air conditioning system.
☀️ Summer: As the sun shines, it's time to clean outdoor spaces, check sprinkler systems for optimal performance, address any pesky pests, and ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are in working order.
🍂 Autumn: As leaves fall, inspect decks and patios for slippery growth, check attic and roof insulation, and seal any openings to keep the cosy warmth inside.
❄️ Winter: Embrace the chilly season by insulating pipes to prevent freezing, pruning trees for safety, proofing doors and windows to keep the cold air out, and ensuring the heating system is working efficiently.
Tumblr media
By staying proactive with scheduled maintenance, you'll minimise surprises and show your tenants that their well being matters.
The Classic Dilemma: DIY or Professional Help?
You know you have repairs and upgrades to tackle in your tenants' houses, but when should you call the professionals and when should you channel your inner DIY enthusiast? It's a classic dilemma. Studies show that while 41% of UK landlords have attempted DIY repairs, almost the same number (35%) end up regretting it.
Before diving headfirst into a DIY project, it's crucial to evaluate whether you have the necessary tools and knowledge to proceed. Sure, you might be handy with a hammer, but certain repairs might require specialised skills or equipment. Just remember to prioritise safety and don't hesitate to seek professional help.
Tumblr media
Painting Dreams and Lighting Up Savings
Whether you choose to DIY or prefer to call in the Fixers, sprucing up your rental space doesn't have to drain your wallet.
First off, consider refreshing the property with a coat of paint. A new colour can instantly breathe life into any space without breaking the bank. Another idea is to upgrade the property's lighting by swapping out old fixtures with energy efficient options. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but can also save on utility bills in the long run.
Also, don't underestimate the power of landscaping! Tame those wild hedges, plant colourful flowers or add some outdoor seating to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. And bonus trick: repurposing old furniture or accessories with a bit of creativity and a fresh coat of paint can give your property a unique touch while staying within your budget.
From Repair Riddles to Upgrade Treasures
As you can see, managing tenant repairs and upgrades on a budget can be both practical and enjoyable! Remember to equip your tenants with a list of trusted vendors for emergencies and don't forget to schedule regular maintenance inspections to ensure property tenant safety. Also, give your place a fresh makeover every now and then. It's the perfect recipe for adding charm and character to your property!
And if DIY is your favourite route, the Bokafix app is always here to help! With just a few clicks, you can book quality Fixers for emergencies or schedule repairs.
Remember, the secret lies in the small details that can transform your property into something extraordinary.

Tackling Challenges Head On
Starting a DIY project can be exciting and fulfilling. However, it's no secret that obstacles may arise along the way, but with a little preparation, you can navigate these challenges like a pro and achieve the best results. Here are some of those obstacles to beware of:
Don’t Skip Important Steps
It happens more often than you might think. For instance, skipping essential prep work like sanding or priming before painting can result in a dull finish that peels or chips over time.
How to Fixt it: take a moment to read all instructions beforehand thoroughly. Also, ensure you have the necessary skills and supplies to complete each step. By taking the time to properly prepare you will set the foundation for a successful DIY endeavour.
Size Matters
Even a small hiccup in measurements can throw off the entire project, but this mistake is easily avoidable.
How to Fixt it: Take the time to evaluate the room and consider proportion and scale. Also,  take the time to measure, mark, and then measure again to help ensure you have the right fit the first time.
Beware of your Tools
Using the wrong tool for a DIY project can make the job more challenging, and unsafe and lead to not so great results. Each tool is designed for specific uses and materials, and using them interchangeably can lead to frustration, unsafe conditions and slow down your home decor progress.
How to Fixt it: Always use the appropriate tools for each task and familiarise yourself with their proper usage beforehand. Also, take the necessary time to read and follow safety guidelines for using tools and equipment.  Don't hesitate to seek advice from professionals at your local store to ensure you select the right tools for the job.
By addressing these common DIY challenges you'll help make sure your home decor project is a success. Not only will you achieve remarkable results, but you'll also enjoy a safer and more enjoyable DIY experience along the way.
Budget Home DIY Ideas
Well, now that you've taken care of the measurements, gathered the right tools and safety equipment (and double rechecked the measurements), it's time to dive into the fun part: getting your hands to work! Let's infuse your home with warmth and charm with these creative and personalised ideas.
Cosy Reading Nook: Transform a corner of your living room or bedroom into a cosy reading nook by adding a comfortable armchair (that you found at your favourite antique store) or a plush floor cushion, a soft throw blanket, and a small bookshelf filled with your favourite reads. This cosy retreat will help you to relax with a good book.
Candle Holders: Craft your candle holders using mason jars, twine, and decorative accents. Fill them with scented candles in soothing fragrances to create a cosy atmosphere.
Personalised Wall Gallery: Create a personalised wall gallery by displaying cherished photographs, artwork, and meaningful quotes. Give it another unique layer of decor by getting old frames and applying a coat of paint. Don’t forget to mix and match frames in various sizes and styles to fit your own.
Play with Textures: Choose plush cushions, fluffy blankets and textured curtains to create a cosy experience. Layer rugs of different sizes and patterns to add depth and warmth to your floors.
With these ideas, you'll be on your way to creating a space that wraps you in comfort and cosiness. Embrace your creativity, follow your instincts and let your personal style shine through!

Tumblr media
Imagine a world filled with vibrant flowers and vegetables, and the sweet scent of hard work paying off in the air. Sounds like a paradise, right? Well, you can create your green haven, even if you're just starting and have no gardening experience.
While gardening might seem like an exclusive club for experts, we've got a secret to share: it's open to everyone! We're here to help you get the basics, uncover exciting DIY projects, and show you the tips and tricks that will make you feel like a gardening pro.
So, get ready to dig in, get your hands dirty, and grow something amazing!
What Do I Need to Start Gardening?
Before you embark on your gardening adventure, it's time to gather your new trusty companions: your gardening tools.
Also, remember that your tool collection can grow with your gardening skills. Start with the basics, and as you learn, you'll discover your personal favourites.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Spade or Trowel: Perfect for planting, transplanting, and weeding.
Pruners or Secateurs: Like scissors for your garden, ideal for trimming and shaping.
Garden Fork: Helps turn soil and mix in nutrients.
Watering Can or Hose: Your plants need hydration; these deliver it.
Gardening Gloves: Protect your hands from thorns and dirt.
Wheelbarrow: For moving heavy materials with ease.
Rake: Handy for smoothing soil and tidying up.
Tumblr media
Now that you've got your gardening toolkit sorted, let's move on to choosing the perfect plants for your garden.
How to Choose the Right Plants for Your Garden?
To create your garden masterpiece, you need to choose the perfect plants. It's a bit like assembling a dream team, and here's how you do it.
Start by getting acquainted with your garden's personality. Does it need lots of sun or prefer the shade? Is it windy or calm? Next, define your garden's purpose. Are you in it for the beauty, the veggies, or perhaps to attract local wildlife? Knowing these quirks helps you select plants that will thrive in your space.
Also, it’s important to consider your level of commitment. Some plants are high maintenance, while others are more independent. Be realistic about the care you can provide.
Lastly, remember that variety is the spice of gardening. Be sure to mix different plant sizes, colours, and shapes. This will help create a vibrant and exciting space.

Crafting a Masterpiece 101: DIY Garden Ideas
Gardening isn't just about planting, it's about creating a living work of art. And the best part? You're the artist! Here are three exciting DIY gardening ideas to add some personality to your green haven.
Step into Serenity with Stepping Stones
If you're concerned about constant foot traffic wearing down your lawn, here's a smart solution: position stepping stones at regular intervals and plant grass seed around them. Simply choose stones that are both visually appealing and comfortable to walk on.
Rise to the Veggie Occasion with Raised Beds
If you want to grow your food, consider building a raised vegetable bed. These are great because you won't need to dig into your soil, giving you better control over the nutrients you add. Plus, they keep your fruits and veggies safe from people and pets wandering around.
Here is a guide on how to build the perfect raised bed for your garden!
Birds are your Garden’s Best Friend
Birds aren't just charming garden visitors, they're natural garden helpers too! They eat pests and fertilise your garden as they go. To welcome them, craft a DIY bird feeder. Watch as your garden comes alive with their joyful presence and help.
Remember, maintaining your garden involves consistent watering, correct fertilising, and vigilant pest control. Avoiding common errors like irregular watering, improper fertilisation, and neglecting pest prevention is key. By attending to these aspects, your garden will thrive and flourish beautifully.
Growing from Challenges and Successes
As you embark on your gardening journey, think about your garden's personality, and its purpose and commit to its care. Also, don't be afraid to get creative!
Whether crafting stepping stones, building raised beds, or inviting feathered friends with a DIY bird feeder, there's a special project for every gardener.
So, remember that gardening is a continuous learning journey, where even mistakes become stepping stones to success. Nurture your garden with care, embrace DIY projects, and unleash the beauty of learning from every gardening experience.

The Secret Weapon to Nail Home Maintenance in London
Mr. Handyman, bring me a dream,
make my home the nicest that I've ever seen.
From fixting leaks to painting walls,
I'll sleep soundly knowing you've answered my calls.
Tumblr media
Taking care of our home is a joy, but we have to admit, it can be a real pane in the glass sometimes! From minor repairs to major renovations, the to do list seems endless. Not to mention the loads of money spent each year. In 2021 alone, the total maintenance and repair spending in the UK stood at approximately 3.8 billion pounds. It’s true that some tasks can be handled with a (not always so simple) DIY approach, but others, we have to admit, need the expertise of a professional. That's where your local handyman comes in. In this post, we will explore why home maintenance services are essential and the benefits of hiring a professional.
So sit back, get cosy and let us take you on a journey of home maintenance and the ultimate fixer: the handyman!
Handy Help: What Are the Benefits of Hiring Handyman Services?
If you're feeling like you're stuck between a "rock and a hard plaster" when it comes to home maintenance, don't worry! By hiring a handyman, you can enjoy a range of benefits, from saving time and money to having peace of mind that your home is in good hands. In fact, a study done by the UK Government has shown that 88% of homeowners who hire a handyman report being satisfied with the service they received.  When it comes to home maintenance costs, London does not come to play. With the highest in the UK, an average annual price of £5,073, it can make anyone feel like they're being taken to the cleaners! That's where your local handyman comes in to save the day (and your wallet).
What Are the Main Responsibilities of a Handyman? Let's Get to the Nuts and Bolts of It!
A handyman's responsibilities can vary from job to job, but they typically include performing home repairs, maintaining the property, and improving home features. From fixing a leaky faucet to installing a new light fixture, they can handle it all. It's no wonder that handypersons are predicted to be one of the most in demand trades in 2023, with 67% of professionals expecting to be very busy.
Hiring a professional handyman can not only save you time and hassle but can also ensure the job is done safely and efficiently. So, before you grab your toolbox and say that you can "easily DIY your next project", consider this: in 2020-21 alone, according to the NHS, over 8,000 people in the UK ended up in hospital after mishandling a tool, like a hammer or saw. That's a lot of (unnecessary) injuries!
So, think twice before reaching for that hammer and consider booking a local handyman instead.
Hammering it Out: Why Do We Need Home Maintenance Services?
Home is where the heart is, but it's also where the leaky faucets, squeaky doors, and faulty wiring can be found. That's where home maintenance services come in handy! Not only do they take care of the small repairs and big renovations, but they can also save you from costly repairs in the long run.
Did you know that 1 in 4 people in London are trying to avoid spending money on fixing their household appliances until the worst happens? However, neglecting basic home maintenance could be costing you a lot of money.
For example, failing to clean gutters can result in water damage or a leaky roof, while neglecting HVAC maintenance can lead to higher energy bills and reduced indoor air quality. According to a study, the average cost of addressing these issues early on is £100, while waiting can result in costs exceeding £400 down the line.
Tumblr media
Don't Get Caught with Your Tool Belt Down: How to Budget for Home Maintenance
What's the key to a happy mind? A well kept home! In fact, according to a recent survey, 87% of UK homeowners and renters agree that their home has a significant impact on their mental wellbeing.
Keeping in mind that London has the highest maintenance cost in the UK, budgeting seems like the best tool to help with home maintenance, both routine tasks and unexpected repairs. A good rule of thumb is to set aside around 1% of your home's value each year for maintenance and repairs. For example, if your home is worth £300,000, you should budget around £3,000 per year. And if your home is older, at over 30 years old, it's suggested to budget around 4% of its value.
Tumblr media
And did you know that 17% of Brits splurge the most in their living room, 9% in the bathroom, and 14% in the kitchen? So, if you're looking to give your home a little love, those might be great places to start.
Get the Job Done Right: Your Guide to Finding a Good Handyman in London
Now we know why property maintenance is a crucial aspect of owning a home and that handymen can be a valuable asset in keeping your property in top condition. Also, remember that regular home maintenance is essential for preventing costly repairs and maintaining the value of your property.
While the benefits of hiring a handyman are clear, finding a trustworthy and qualified professional can be a challenge. How Much Do Bathroom Renovations (Really) Cost?
Do you want to find out the REAL costs of renovating your bathroom? Join us today as we’ll unclog the truth behind your dream makeover!
Tumblr media
Are you ready to transform your blank canvas of a bathroom into an amazing masterpiece? Get your toolbox and prepare to plunge into the wonderful world of bathroom renovations! And, hold on to your loofahs, because did you know that bathroom renovations in the UK can vary from £500 to £10,000 on average?
No need to panic, we're here to reveal the ultimate guide on the cost of sprucing up your loo and how you can budget for it! From simple bathroom fixtures to walk in showers, we're here to spill the beans on costs and share insights on the budget of those dreamy bathroom renovation projects.
Let's dive into this adventure!
Decoding the Bathroom Remodel Costs
When it comes to renovating your bathroom, the cost of fixtures and finishes play a great role. This includes everything from showers and toilets to flooring and lighting. Factors like quality, quantity, and finish affect the expenses, meaning, premium materials can be pricier, while larger spaces require more materials, driving up the costs. Also, fancy finishes like granite countertops and solid wood cabinets add charm but come with extra labour and material costs.
To exemplify the world of bathroom fixtures and materials we've just discussed, let's dive into some price points:
The electric shower has an average cost of £50 and if you want a power shower, get ready to spend £150!
Regarding the toilets, a floor mounted one sits lower at £50, meanwhile, a wall hung toilet can go for a whopping £500. The average spent is £275.
As for the flooring, ceramic and porcelain tiles range from £15 to £40 per square metre, while vinyl flooring may vary from £15 to £30 per square metre.
When it comes to budgeting for your bathroom transformation, don't forget to factor in the labour of your Fixer. It's like adding the final touch of expertise to your renovation recipe! According to research, on average, a bathroom upgrade takes up to two or three days and can set you back around £1,000 for the labour. But keep in mind that these figures may vary depending on the size and complexity of your makeover.
Tumblr media
Don't Flush Your Money Down the Drain: Budget Wisely!
Hold onto your toilet seats, because we're about to talk about expenses! As we said before, the final cost depends on many factors, such as the size of your bathroom and the design of your dreams. Always remember that it's all about finding that perfect balance between your vision and your budget.
Let's dive into the budgeting waters! Here's a handy guide to help you navigate your funds and make a splash with your bathroom renovation: Installation fees can take up 20% of your budget, while you can expect to allocate around 15% for fixtures and 16% for cabinetry and hardware. Countertops make up roughly 7%, with lighting and ventilation at approximately 5% and flooring might take up to 9%. While the plumbing and taps can make up 14% of your final budget.
Keeping these percentages in mind during your budgeting process will help ensure a balanced organisation of your funds.
Tumblr media
Making Great Upgrades on a Budget
Don't let the cost flush your dreams away! Get crafty and give your bathroom a makeover that won't empty your pockets. Let's dive into some clever cost saving tips that'll leave you flush with savings and your bathroom looking smashing!
1. Shop Around for Deals
To save money on bathroom renovations, it's essential to be a savvy shopper. Shop around for the best bargains on fixtures, materials, and accessories. By comparing prices from different suppliers, you'll find hidden treasures of cost variations. Keep an eye out for sales, promotions, and discounts that can significantly reduce the overall cost of your renovation.
2. I Think, Therefore, I can DIY
While it's important to recognise your limitations and hire professionals for complex plumbing or electrical work, there are several tasks you can tackle yourself to save money. Painting the walls, installing towel racks or changing light fixtures are all DIY friendly tasks that can be accomplished with a bit of research and basic tools. Be sure to follow safety guidelines and consult tutorials specific to each task.
3. Keep an Eye for Alternatives
Consider exploring alternative materials that offer similar aesthetics but come at a lower price point. For example, vinyl or laminate flooring can be budget friendly alternatives to pricier tile or hardwood options. By researching and comparing different materials, you can find affordable options that align with your desired style and budget.
4. Spruce up your Fixtures
Before completely replacing your bathroom fixtures, evaluate whether any of them can be repurposed or refurbished. For instance, if your cabinets or vanity units are in good condition, a reglazing or refinishing job can give them a fresh look without the expense of purchasing new ones.
5. Get your Priorities Sorted
When working with a limited budget, it's important to prioritise functional aspects that improve your bathroom. Focus, for example, on addressing plumbing issues and improving ventilation. These upgrades will not only save you money in the long run but also improve the overall functionality of your space.
With these cost effective tips in your bathroom renovation arsenal, together with our budgeting tips, you'll be all set for the makeover of your dreams. Prepare for a smashing transformation that won't leave your wallet knackered!
Walk in Showers: Where Safety Meets Style
Home accidents claim the lives of approximately 6,000 people every year in the UK, according to ROSPA. The cost of these accidents to our society exceeds a staggering £45 billion annually. It's a stark reminder of the importance of safety within our homes.
That's where walk in showers come in. Not only do they add a wow factor to any bathroom renovation, but they can also be a lifesaver. With no need to step over ledges or navigate steep thresholds, they eliminate the risk of tripping.
The best part? Walk in showers can be customised to fit any space, offering both practicality and style. They are easier to access and to clean. So, when making the plans for your bathroom renovation, think about the safety and convenience that a walk in shower can bring to your daily routine.

Hire or DIY for your Next Painting Project?
Considering hiring a professional for your next painting project or taking the DIY route? Let's take a look at all you need to know to make the best decision for you!
Tumblr media
The Decorator's Dilemma
Ready to give your living space a fresh coat of paint? It’s time to decide: should you embrace your inner artist or rely on the expertise of a professional? According to a recent survey on DIY habits in the UK, a whopping 90 percent of females have conquered the art of painting and decorating, outshining their male peers at 82 percent.
Tumblr media
In this blog post, we'll discuss the pros and cons of professional help versus DIY, along with tips and tricks to help you make the home of your dreams.
Get your brush and paint bucket ready, and let’s get started!
From DIY Dilemmas to Flawless Finales
There's a certain sense of accomplishment that comes with rolling up your sleeves and embarking on a DIY painting project. It lets you channel your inner artist and gives your home a personal flair. But don't brush off the project's complexity, time commitment, or your skill level!
Before diving in, ponder the pros and cons and make sure you don't end up with a fixer upper instead of a masterpiece. When it comes to painting, surface preparation is the key to success. Remember, you must scrape, sand, patch, and fill every nook and cranny before diving into the fun part. Trust us, no fancy paint can disguise a wall that resembles the moon's surface!
And do you want to know the secret to a professional looking finish, free of lumps and bumps? The kitchen sieve! Might sound crazy, but painters and decorators swear by this hack for achieving flawless results. Position the sieve over a clean paint scuttle, pour the paint through, and let it work its magic. It effortlessly strains out any unwanted particles, ensuring a smooth finish. Plus, it's sustainable and can be used repeatedly. And the best part? It only costs £2! Don't strain your creativity, let the kitchen sieve do the work.
How to Choose the Ideal Paint Colours for Your Space
Choosing the right paint colours is like unlocking a world of possibilities for your home. They can help create an atmosphere that speaks to you, because colours have powers when it comes to influencing our emotions. So, let's dive into some tips to help you choose the perfect paint colours!
According to colour psychology, different colours and shades can bring to light various emotions. So it's crucial to choose a colour that nurtures the room's purpose. Transform your space with vibrant shades for an energetic and lively atmosphere and create a serene environment with soothing blues and greens.
Did you know that illumination not only brightens up a room but also has an influence on your wall colour? Before you make that final decision, consider how light plays its part. Rooms facing north or south enjoy indirect sunlight, giving them a cooler atmosphere. On the other hand, rooms facing east or west get direct sunlight and need warmer undertones.
A pro tip is to grab a sample and paint a square on your wall. Watch how it behaves with different lights throughout the day! This little experiment ensures your colour choice thrives under any lighting condition.
And if you're feeling a bit stuck and need some extra guidance to make this crucial decision, here is an expert guide to choosing the right paint colour for you!
When to Call in the Professionals
Ultimately, knowing when to seek professional help and when to tackle it yourself is the key to making wise choices in home projects.
Therefore, if your walls are in good condition and you're looking for a simple colour change, feel free to tackle the project yourself. Touching up small spots or repainting a small room, for instance, can often be done without hiring a professional. However, remember not to skimp on tools. Using low quality materials with expensive paint won't lead to the best results. Invest in quality tools to achieve a professional looking finish.
On the other hand, hiring a pro can be a smart move. They're experts in paint types and know which ones work best for each surface and room. With their skills, they handle all the necessary prep work, leaving you with a flawless finish. They bring their own tools, saving you money and space. Plus, they work efficiently, giving you time to focus on what you love.
Tumblr media
The Answer to the Decorator's Dilemma
We know that taking on a DIY painting project allows you to express your creativity and add a personal touch to your home. So, remember to prioritise surface preparation for the best results, and don't forget the kitchen sieve hack for a smooth finish. Consider the impact of the lighting in the room and the select the best colour to show your desired ambience.
All that being said, for expert advice, a flawless finish, and time saved on prep work, hiring a professional is a wise choice. So, consider the complexity of the task, your desired results and your budget before deciding.
And if you choose to hire a pro, Bokafix is here to help you find the perfect decorator and painter. Streamlining the booking process, our app ensures an experience free of stress. Download the Bokafix app today and start your renovation project in no time.
Happy painting!

DIY vs. Hiring a Fixer: Which is Right for You? The Ultimate Home Repair Dilemma
A battle between your inner handyman and your wallet...what to do? Let's dive deep into home repairs by taking a look at the pros and cons of hiring a fixer vs DIY!
Tumblr media
Are you tired of staring at the same boring walls and outdated decor every day? You're not alone! In fact, in 2020, retail sales of decorating and DIY supplies in the UK reached £9.1 billion! It seems like everyone is on a mission to transform their homes into stylish and cosy nooks. And with so much time spent at home during the pandemic, it's no wonder that people are getting creative with DIY projects and redecorating. So, whether you're a DIY enthusiast or prefer to leave the hammering to the professionals, there's no denying the appeal of a fresh, updated living space.
Tumblr media
In this article, we'll explore the benefits of hiring a professional fixer vs. DIY, common mistakes in DIY repairs, time and effort-saving aspects, and how it can affect the value of your home. Let's roll up our sleeves and dive into the world of home repairs!  To DIY or Not To DIY?
When it comes to home repairs, professional fixers bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and tools to the table. They are trained and skilled in handling various repair tasks, from minor fixes to complex repairs involving electricity or plumbing. Following building codes and regulations is crucial for safety and compliance, and registered fixers ensure that repairs are done correctly and up to code. This gives homeowners peace of mind, knowing that the repairs are done to a high standard and built to last.
And while it's tempting to put on your tool belt and become a DIY superhero, sometimes it's best to leave it to the pros. According to Statista, while Brits are confident in their ability to tackle painting and decoration at 85%, and assembling and installing furniture at 82%, when it comes to plumbing and electrical work, it's easy to get shocked by the complexity of it all (pun intended), with only 25% feeling comfortable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maximising Home Value and Minimising Stress
One of the significant advantages of hiring a certified fixer is that it can save valuable time and effort. DIY repairs often require extensive research, planning, and execution, which can consume a lot of time and be exhausting. On the other hand, hiring a tradesperson allows homeowners to focus on other tasks or simply enjoy their free time while the repairs are taken care of. Additionally, high-quality repairs done by professionals can increase the value of your home and attract prospective buyers, giving you peace of mind and a better return on your investment.   The Fix-It Formula: When to Call a Pro and When to DIY
While DIY repairs can be tempting to save money, they come with their fair share of risks. Lack of expertise and experience can lead to potential issues and additional expenses down the road. Common mistakes in DIY repairs include using the wrong tools, incorrect measurements, and using improper techniques.
Fixing these mistakes can take time, be costly, and even cause further damage to your home. Hiring a professional fixer can help you avoid these mistakes and ensure that the repairs are done right the first time. Certified and experienced tradespeople have the necessary knowledge to evaluate the situation accurately and provide effective solutions, saving you unnecessary headaches and expenses. How DIY and Pro Repairs Can Fatten Your Wallet
Home improvements that cater to the demands of the local market can significantly increase the value of your home. According to Foxtons, home improvements that appeal to the local market can bring house value increases of 15 to 20%. This means that making the right repairs and improvements can have a significant impact on the overall value of your home. Hiring a professional fixer for home repairs can ensure that the repairs are done to a high standard, using quality materials and techniques that meet market demands.
But if you're interested in exploring DIY options, be sure to check out our blog post on ways to freshen up your home on a budget. With a little creativity and effort, you can transform your living space without breaking the bank. Make Your Home Sweet Home Sweeter
The decision between DIY and hiring a professional fixer for home repairs depends on various factors, including your skill level, experience, and the complexity of the repairs. While DIY repairs may seem appealing, they come with the risk of mistakes and additional expenses. On the other hand, hiring a qualified tradesperson brings numerous benefits, including experience and access to the right tools and materials, which can result in high-quality repairs, time and effort savings, and the assurance that they will comply with building codes.
Whether you're a DIY enthusiast or prefer to leave repairs to the experts, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons and make an informed decision that aligns with your needs. Remember, a well-repaired and maintained home not only provides comfort and safety for you and your family but can also be a valuable asset in the long run.

Making even small improvements to your home can have a big impact on its value. If you're thinking of selling up, or just want to make your property more attractive to potential buyers, here are 10 easy and relatively inexpensive ways to add value to your house.
Tumblr media
Over 1.4 million homes were sold in the UK alone in 2021, and there is big money to be made. The question is, how can you maximise the value of your home in preparation for listing it on the market.
Tumblr media
1. Paint your front door a bright colour
First impressions count, so make sure your home stands out from the rest of the street. The entrance to your home is the perfect place to start making improvements. A fresh coat of paint can work wonders, and choosing a bright colour will really make your property stand out. It's a relatively cheap and easy improvement that will add value to your home.
2. Change the light and socket fixtures to a modern metallic matte finish
This is a quick and easy way to give your home an instant lift, making it look more contemporary and appealing. 32% of buyers are put off by outdated electrics. So try to go for the latest models with USB or mini USB charging points to add that high tech home feel.
3. Don’t be afraid of colour
A little bit of colour can go a long way in making a space feel more inviting. Add a few cushions or throws in complementary shades, when it comes to painting rooms, try to stick to muted or pastel colours for that classic look that won't put off buyers and paint the whole room instead of just an accent wall.
4. Add an outdoor rug to create more space for relaxing outside (summer months only, obvs!)
If you have a patio or decking area, make it more inviting and appealing by adding an outdoor rug and some nice garden furniture. It's a great way to make the most of your outdoor living space and enjoy the warmer weather as well as create the illusion of more space and make it feel more like an extension of your home, rather than just a place to store garden furniture. Not only will it make your garden or patio look nicer, but it will also add value to your home.
Tumblr media
5. Deep clean and get rid of clutter around the house, including old clothes, shoes, and books
According to a GoCompare Home Insurance study, 31% of buyers would avoid purchasing a property if they found it in an unhygienic state.
One of the quickest and simplest ways to improve the look of your home is by cleaning and decluttering. Having too much stuff or dirt around the house can make it look messy and unkempt, so get rid of anything you don't need or use anymore. This will help to make your home look more spacious and tidy, and potential buyers will appreciate being able to see themselves living there.
6. Modern simple light fixtures
Update your light fittings to something more contemporary and stylish. This will brighten up your home and make it look more appealing. Stay away from bling and colourful light fixtures, stick to metals or one colour shades.
Tumblr media
7. Re-turf your garden
A well-maintained garden is a real selling point, so make sure yours is looking its best. If the grass is looking a bit patchy, consider re-turfing to give it a fresh, green look. This is a relatively cheap and easy improvement that will add value to your home by making it look more attractive from the street so don't forget your front garden!
8. Update your garage door
This is one of those things that you might not think about, but making sure your garage door is in good condition will add value to your home. If it's looking a bit worn or dated, consider replacing it with a new one to give your home an instant facelift. Repainting is also a cheaper option.
9. Replace your house numbers with modern ones
This is a small change that can make a big difference. New, stylish house numbers will help to improve the curb appeal of your home and make it look more up-to-date and welcoming.
Tumblr media
10. Use smart storage options
18% of people are turned off by untidy homes, so adding additional storage space is always a bonus, especially if you can do it in a way that looks good too. If you're short on space, make use of smart storage solutions to free up some room. This could include installing shelves or cupboards in unused nooks and crannies, using under-bed storage containers, or investing in a wardrobe. Invest in some well-designed storage solutions and use them to declutter your home and improve its overall appearance.
Making even small improvements to your home can have a big impact on its value. If you're thinking of selling up, or just want to make your property more attractive to potential buyers, these 10 easy and relatively inexpensive ways to add value to your house should help you get started.

Introducing Bokafix – a New App for Tradespeople
The Bokafix app helps you find new customers and find more local work without the hassle and marketing costs.
Tumblr media
The Bokafix app helps you find new customers and find more local work without the hassle and marketing costs.
The number of people renovating their houses has risen significantly in recent years. With the current economic climate and rise in house prices, many Homeowners have opted to make improvements to their existing homes rather than buying a new one. As a result, the demand for Tradespeople has skyrocketed which in turn means that staying organised and on top of things has become harder than ever for Fixers. In fact research shows that Brits search for local Tradesmen on Google over 700,000 times every month!
Tumblr media
Each month, Brits make 162,415 searches for a Plumber, accounting for 23% of all online trade queries. Plumbers are the most in demand trade in the UK. Since online search is a popular method for finding Tradespeople, and the competition is high, especially amongst bigger companies, it’s difficult to stand out from the crowd. Bokafix can help you gain greater exposure in your local area by offering an app that allows users to instantly book qualified Tradespeople without the need for research, quotes and long wait times. There is no longer a need to spend on advertising and we also handle all admin, payments and scheduling directly in the app.

Best Place In The World To Work For Tradespeople
Looking for the best places to work as a Fixer? We've made a list of the top 5 places in the world for tradespeople along with the reasons why they're good.
Tumblr media
Finding the best place to work can be difficult in every profession. A big city doesn’t guarantee more work. You might be asking yourself, “what makes a place great for tradespeople?”. The amount of work available is a big factor but you also need to consider the cost of living. If you live in an area with a high cost of living, a significant portion of your income will be spent on other expenses like electricity, food, gas, etc. That’s why it's crucial to double check these kinds of details before relocating. School quality, work life balance, level of education, career prospects and the weather are additional factors to take into account.
Tumblr media
You may be surprised to learn that nearly 90% of tradespeople report cost increases, 84% report issues with the availability of materials, and 44% report a lack of labour. This implies that it's essential to understand an area's advantages and disadvantages before relocating.
We've created a list of the places in the world where tradespeople are paid the highest and compared those salaries to the work-life balance, cost of living, and climate. Here, we not only explore the advantages of an area but also the disadvantages. Now let’s have a look at the BEST places to live and work as a tradesperson:
Scotland
Work: Glasgow has Scotland's highest average wage for tradespeople (£32.058).
Work/life Balance: Scotland has been awarded the best city in the UK for work/life balance. The average salary is higher compared to house/rent prices, and residents have shorter commutes and fewer working hours.
Climate: Scotland has a temperate maritime climate. It typically experiences mild winters and cool summers, though rain continues throughout the year. Scotland experiences cooler temperatures than the rest of Britain due to its geographic location.
Cost of Living: For a single person, the average monthly cost of living in Scotland is about £1.207.
USA
Work: On average, electricians get paid around £41.481 per year, plumbers £36.581 and carpenters £32.998. Alaska and New York, Illinois, Hawaii, and New Jersey are the cities with the highest pay for tradespeople, followed by Alaska and New York.
Work/life Balance: 90% of professionals work more than 50 hours a week, with many of them continuing to work over the weekends.
Climate: The climate in the US ranges from tropical in Florida and Hawaii to arctic in Alaska. Summers in New York are bright and hot, and winters are chilly, snowy, and windy.
Cost of Living: The average monthly living cost for a single person living in the US is around £2.612/month.
Australia
Work: The average salary for electricians in Australia is £48.631/year, a Vocational Education and Training Course is needed along with an apprenticeship and a licence to work unsupervised. The cities with the highest pay are Canberra and Perth, followed by Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Qualifications play a big role in the wage as well as the location.
Work/life Balance: In Australia people tend to work long hours. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development, 13% of its citizens work more than 50 hours per week.
Climate: Perth has hot and dry summers and mild winters. The more north you travel the warmer and dryer it gets. Sydney has mild weather throughout the year while Brisbane tends to be hotter.
Cost of Living: For a single person, the typical monthly cost of living is about £2643.
Germany
Work: Frankfurt and Munich are the cities with the highest pay for tradespeople, followed by Stuttgart and Berlin. An electrician in Frankfurt for example gets paid around £47.000/year. To become an electrician in Germany you’ll need 2 years work experience and a C&G 2391/2392. Carpenters will need to register with the “Register of Crafts and Trade” in order to start working.
Work/life Balance: Germany has a great work life balance in general, with four weeks of vacation per year and working typically 34 hours/week.
Climate: The climate in Germany is typically mild. Extremely low winter temperatures and high summer temperatures are uncommon.
Cost of Living: The average monthly cost of living can be anywhere from £881 to £1.762.
England
Work: The average salary for a qualified electrician is £30.500/year. To work as an electrician in the UK you’ll need a Level 3 NVQ diploma in Electrotechnical Services, Installing electrotechnical systems and equipment or a diploma in Electrical installations. The highest wage can be found in London, followed by Bristol, Portsmouth and Brighton. Plumbers can earn around £25.000 annually while carpenters around £25.000 to £40.000.
Work/life Balance: On average Britons spend around 55% of their life working. Three in ten working professionals are satisfied with their current work/life balance.

How To Find Qualified Tradespeople In Your Area
In the past three years, 64% of people in the UK needed to call a tradesperson and 37% of them struggled to find someone to complete the job. It's a problem that many of us face and a frustration that none of us need. 'There must be a better way!', we hear you scream out loud (sometimes with a FFS thrown in there for good measure).
Tumblr media
There are a number of ways to find qualified tradespeople in your area. One way is to ask family and friends for recommendations. Another way is to search online directories that list tradespeople by region and category of trade. Of course, there is also the old reliable Google, but what if you haven't got time to sit trawling through hundreds of tradesmen comparison sites or Google results? That's where Bokafix comes in but we'll get to that in a minute!
Tumblr media
Once you have a few names, it's important to research each one to make sure they are trustworthy and reliable. Over 13% of homeowners have been the victim of botched jobs in the UK so it's important to do your homework! Check online reviews and see if there are any complaints lodged against them with your national or regional consumer watchdog, or local authority. You can also find the relevant trade association and check credentials for regulated skilled trades such as plumbers or electricians for example. It's also a good idea to ask for references from past clients. When you've found a few tradespeople you feel comfortable with, get quotes from each one for the job you need doing. Be sure to compare apples to apples - that is, make sure each quote is for the same scope of work. Once you have the quotes, you can decide which tradesperson to hire based on price, reviews, and your own gut feeling.
Once the job is complete, be sure to inspect it carefully. Make sure the work meets your expectations and is up to regulation standards. If you have any concerns or uncertainty, be sure to raise them with the tradesperson right away, any legit company should be happy to provide documentation or information on the required standards. More often than not, you'll find that most reputable tradespeople will want to make things right if there are any problems with their work, but if you do find yourself in a situation where the work is not up to par, you may need to file a complaint with trading standards or take legal action. You can get advice on rouge tradesman and how to proceed at government bodies like Citizens advice in the UK who received reports of over 234,825 cases related to home improvement in the last five years. In most cases, however, a simple conversation with the tradesperson will suffice.
With 52% of people having had someone claiming to be a trader call out of the blue or turn up unannounced at their door, it's important to know your stuff and get it right!
