‘Onder de perenboom’ van Theodor Fontane: gewetensnood op het scherpst van de snede

In zijn elegante halflinnen reeks publiceert uitgeverij Wereldbibliotheek Onder de perenboom, een minder bekend werk van de grote Theodor Fontane (1819-1898). Dit vernuftig misdaadverhaal geldt als een buitenbeentje in het oeuvre van de auteur van bekende realistische romans als Effie Briest, Stechlin en Dolingen dwalingen. 

Nochtans komen veel favoriete thema’s uit de grote romans even sterk naar voor in Onder de perenboom. De ongezouten kritiek op een geborneerde middenklasse bijvoorbeeld of het allesverslindende protestants schuldbesef en het morele bankroet van de kleinburgerlijke middenstand. De subtiel uitgewerkte psychologische verdieping van de personages en de prangende schildering van een bekrompen dorpsmilieu maken van Onder de perenboom veel meer dan een doorsneethriller. Hoewel de lezer vanaf de eerste bladzijden de dader kent, weet Fontane er moeiteloos de spanning in te houden en sluit hij zijn verhaal af met een verrassend, onvergetelijk einde.   Hoofdpersoon Abel Hradscheck, een veertiger, drijft sinds een tiental jaar samen met zijn vrouw Ursel rond 1850 een kleine herberg annex winkel in Tschechin, een nietig dorpje aan de Oder, pal in het overgangsgebied tussen de Pruisische en Slavische cultuur. De uit Bohemen afkomstige Hradscheck heeft een duister verleden. Zijn stamgasten, die vooral rondhangen in het aan de herberg palende kegelhuis, vertrouwen hem niet. Hij heeft bovendien gokschulden en een uit de kluiten gewassen drankprobleem. De kokette en ambitieuze Ursel, die twee kinderen verloor en er alles aan doet om de schijn hoog te houden, is evenmin populair in het dorp. De dorpsbewoners aanzien haar als arrogant en hebzuchtig, zeker sinds ze haar man heeft kunnen overtuigen om op een veiling een reeks dure meubels te kopen, waaronder een antieke trumeauspiegel. Om te kunnen trouwen met Hradscheck bekeerde ze zich tot het protestantse geloof. Sindsdien onderhoudt ze een intieme band met de plaatselijke dominee, die haar beschermt en allerlei zaakjes voor haar regelt.   Op een dag bij het omspitten van de tuin stuit Hradscheck op het twintig jaar oude lijk van een Franse soldaat die sinds de napoleontische oorlogen onder de perenboom begraven lag. Kort nadien duikt de Poolse schuldeiser Szulski op en eist onmiddellijke betaling. Hradschreck weet Ursel ervan te overtuigen mee te werken aan een waterdicht moordplan, met een sleutelrol voor de Franse soldaat. Over de moord zelf komt de lezer helemaal niets te weten. Het snode echtpaar slaagt in zijn kwaad opzet, maar geleidelijk kwijnt Ursel weg door een knagend geweten. Uit angst te worden ontdekt neemt Hradscheck een ondoordachte beslissing. Uiteindelijk valt hij door de mand en doet zichzelf de das om.   Fontane schreef vanaf 1883 aan Onder de perenboom. In het verhaal over een gokverslaafde middenstander die samen met zijn bekrompen echtgenote een roofmoord beraamt, verwerkte hij heel wat autobiografische elementen. Zijn vader — een apotheker met een gokverslaving — was in het toenmalige Swinemünde (vandaag Świnoujście in Polen) verbonden aan de plaatselijke burgerwacht en diste geregeld zijn kinderen gelijkaardige moordverhalen uit de eerste hand op. Wegens vaders speelschulden zagen de Fontanes zich verplicht te verkassen naar een kleinere apotheek in het dorp Letschin. Daar ontdekte men in 1842 het lijk van een handelsreiziger in de tuin van een herbergier. De vreemde, spraakmakende misdaad werd breed uitgesmeerd in de nationale pers en zou Fontane niet meer loslaten.   Onder de perenboom verscheen vanaf augustus 1885 als vervolgverhaal in het Duitse gezinstijdschrift Die Gartenlaube (‘Het Prieel’). Dit conservatieve magazine wilde een morele leidraad zijn voor de moderne mens. Met het duistere verhaal van de moordzuchtige herbergier Hradscheck hield Fontane de goegemeente een spiegel voor: dít is waar hebzucht en schulden allemaal toe kunnen leiden. Het is er soms aan te lezen dat Onder de perenboom oorspronkelijk als feuilleton verscheen (bijvoorbeeld door het gebruik van geijkte zinnen als ‘in het voorgaande’ en ‘niet lang na dit voorval’ of door de laatste zin van een vorig hoofdstuk te hernemen bij het begin van een nieuw hoofdstuk), maar storend is dit nooit. Integendeel, het geeft extra zwier en panache aan de vertelling. De vlotte, frisse en uiterst leesbare vertaling van Driessen voegt daar nog bijkomende schwung aan toe.   Deze vrij korte roman wemelt van de schijnbaar onbeduidende details. Het zijn kleine kapstokken waar Fontane flarden van verhaallijnen aan ophangt. In zijn nawoord spreekt vertaler Driessen heel terecht van de ‘overweldigende precisie en economie’ in het verhaal. Tientallen details en motieven fungeren als ankerpunten, als betekenisvolle bouwstenen die het verhaal voortstuwen naar zijn onafwendbaar einde. Enkele opvallende voorbeelden zijn: de noodlottige keg onder de zware rij vaten bij het valluik naar de kelder, de door Ursel gekoesterde trumeau (een soort luxueuze spiegel) in het salon en haar peervormige glazen oorhangers, het fluwelen mutsje van de dominee en de gekleurde venstertjes in Hradschecks kegelhuisje. Alles is relevant en krijgt zijn volle betekenis in de opmerkelijke ontknoping.   Fontane toont zich een meester in de suggestie. Vele vragen blijven onbeantwoord: wat is er bijvoorbeeld gebeurd met de minnares die Hradscheck er ooit op nahield in een naburig dorp? Hoe werd Szulski precies vermoord? Of hoe is de Franse soldaat ooit onder de perenboom terecht gekomen? Zelfs op het einde van het verhaal heeft de lezer er het raden naar hoe Hradscheck aan zijn einde komt. Aan de hand van regelmatige sprongen in de tijd opteert Fontane voor een elliptische vertelstructuur. De alwetende verteller kiest sporadisch voor een paardensprong of een onverwachte rokade. Fontane zet de lezer meer dan eens op het verkeerde been en laat de ware toedracht van de feiten over aan diens verbeelding. Wat het leesplezier alleen maar groter maakt.   Het is duidelijk: Onder de perenboom is meer dan een buitenissig gelegenheidswerk of een alleenstaande anomalie in een voor de rest vrij consistent oeuvre. Fontane demonstreert hier op de korte baan en binnen het genre van de misdaadroman zijn ontzagwekkend vakmanschap en diepgaand psychologisch inzicht. Dat levert een bijzonder spannend, solide en onderhoudend boek op.
