King Julien's accent is Indian. I'm sure that most of the Fandom knows that Sacha Baron Cohen had a lawyer from Sri Lanka and he was inspired to imitate their Indian English accent.

Danny Jacobs did not change it. As an Indian, I'm proud of this. Also, Madagascar was once a part of South India, where i live. Madagascar separated from India with the continental drift and we still have the gap there called "palghat gap" which was formed when the island drifted away

Alps Malai Kaatru Vanthu…..( The breeze of the alps…)
A sunny day after Diwali of 2022 as we were having lunch after completing a tour of Kannyakumari which included the boat ride to Vivekananda rock memorial, I mentioned to my family that how bad this place is being maintained. My elder daughter quipped “what’s wrong with the boat ride? It was good”. That’s when I realised as father, I need to expose my children to better standards so that they aspire and set benchmarks for themselves.
Our first international trip after a long time took us to the fascinating countries of Switzerland and France.  We chose to travel in the last week of May so that we get a chance to go to Roland Garros, Paris.
We landed in Zurich on a pleasant Sunday morning.  As expected, the hotel lobby had all relevant tourist information. As I opened the city map my eyes fell on an exciting place, the FIFA museum. We boarded an almost empty tram and headed straight to the museum. FIFA Museum is a ‘must visit’ for all football lovers. From team jerseys of all 200 plus members, murals of the history of the sport, selfies on the backdrop of iconic stadiums to life size pictures of stars it’s an absolute joy to be here. The best moment is a photo opportunity with the world cup replica. It was a great start to our vacation.
Tumblr media
In the afternoon we headed to the Lindt chocolate museum. You get to taste a lot of chocolates and also take home some.  It has a section dedicated to great inventors and business magnets of Switzerland in the 19th century including that of Mr Lindt. It a great way to instil a sense of pride amongst young Swiss.
The next day we took a train to one of most visited tourist towns by Indians, Lucerne. As you get down from the station, the sight of the beautiful lake welcomes you to the town. Wow! how beautifully designed.  Our hotel was in a 100 plus year old building, hence one can’t have air conditioners. Such a care to preserve the heritage.  We explored this lovely town by foot and relished a Turkish dinner.  Visit to Mt Titlis was the highlight of our trip. The 1 hr journey passes through tiny towns and stations. My younger daughter was counting the number of chairs available in the station platform; 8, 4. It reminded me of the Rameswaram Palghat passenger train I used to take during my stay in Manipal.  From the base in Engelberg to the top of mountain, you change 4 different types of transport, the last being the Rotair, that revolves 360 degrees. It’s an absolute joy to view the alps from the Rotair. Having reached a height of 3020 Mts you are expecting some adrenalin pumping stuff and Titlis doesn’t disappoint you. The Ice flyer, an open chair lift that travels between two mountains covered in snow and the cliff walk over the hanging bridge are some of the most exciting things I have done, next only to the helicopter ride on top on Victoria falls, Zambia.  The infrastructure created in such a terrain in difficult weather conditions is just awesome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Met an old friend after 25 years that evening in Lucerne. After a good walk through the old town, we ended the day with the Swiss delicacy of Fondue in one of the oldest hotels in Lucerne.  As we were taking a stroll, I was mentioning to him that I get a feel as if I am in park in Chennai. An elderly Indian gentleman quipped in Tamil, “Yes it is”. With so many Indian tourists, I wish the visa process is made easier.
Whomsoever I spoke to before the trip had mentioned two towns as a must visit, Lucerne and Interlaken.  Thanks to my cousins input we headed further from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and onward to Trummelbach waterfalls, a glacier fed water falls inside the mountain. The journey from Lucerne to Interlaken through Lake Brienz is so beautiful, you only wish that journey was bit longer.  The colour of the train coaches probably changes in the mood of the place. At Interlaken we boarded the bright blue and yellow train for a 20 mins journey to Lauterbrunnen. It was intriguing to find tourists, Indians especially boarding trains in small stations enroute. I think, given the terrific transport infrastructure in Switzerland its prudent to stay at smaller places to save on accommodation   A short bus trip from the station takes you to the Trummelbach falls. It’s a unique experience, the falls is not visible from the outside and one needs to climb and walk inside the crevices to watch this wonder. The speed of the freezing water and the sound it makes gives an exhilarating experience.
While the beauty of the country was as expected what floored me was the ease with which one can move around Switzerland. The Swiss pass which gives time bound unlimited access in all forms of public transport makes mobility around Switzerland such a pleasure.  The SBB mobile application is just the icing on the cake which even mentions the time needed to walk between platforms/ station to bus stop.  Things work to such a perfection that one wonders what better the Japanese can do when it comes to punctuality.
Almost all Stations in Switzerland are more than just a place to catch a train. It’s like a Mall having multiple shopping, eating options giving tremendous convenience to the passengers. With so much space at the disposal of Indian Railways I wish they tap into them as fast as they could.
Hotels charge a reasonable amount as city tax.  While tourist locations in India also collect entry fee there is no transparency on how its utilised.  In these countries It is obvious that local govt bodies have greater autonomy in manging their affairs. That explains small towns having outstanding infrastructure and top-class maintenance of the utilities.  Read an interesting article during my stay on how a small village of less than 500 is handling tourists’ surge. One of the most loved scenes in the Netflix Korean hit “Crash landing on you” was shot in a picturesque village called Isetwald by the side of Lake Brienz in Switzerland. As they tiny village saw huge influx of Korean tourists the village council has put in place multiple measures including levying a Selfie fee to take a snap at the pier where a romantic scene was shot.
While state governments are right in demanding that central government respects the federal structure of the country and acts accordingly, I am wondering why those same states (and its leaders) don’t want to empower the corporations, towns and panchayats.  It’s a classic irony. My professor who thought us Business Ethics beautifully articulated the meaning of ethics, “don’t do to someone what you don’t want others to do to you”.
Having spent 4 exciting days in Switzerland we were off to our second leg at Paris. We took the famous TGV from Basel to Paris. At 273 KM/hr this was the fastest I have ever been.  A quick Wikipedia search told me that these high-speed trains were introduced in 1981 and they have an astounding safety record. We are already 5 decades behind and still we hear cries of “Why Vande Bharat?” by the same elite who have enjoyed these trains during their international trips.  India should continue to push for high-speed corridors/ trains without taking the eyes on safety. I believe we have resources to focus on both.
First agenda in Paris was a visit to Roland Garros to watch the last day of qualifiers. Having played Tennis only on clay courts, visiting Roland Garros (RG) is like a dream come true. A lot is said about pickpockets and unsafe conditions in Paris for tourists. Even on the previous night of travel I was frantically reading articles in the net on how to be vigilant in Paris.  Nevertheless, with a metro map in our hand and some advice from the hotel staff we decided to take Metro to RG as Taxis come at a premium. It’s a given thing in cities that have excellent public transportation system.  Through the course of the next 4 days we took the metro mostly and it was so convenient and safe.
It was a bright and sunny day at Paris which made it a good day for Tennis. A silver-coloured statue of the King of Clay, Rafa welcomes you into the Roland Garros complex. The various stalls from the sponsors manned by very friendly staff provided lots of Photo ops and kept the kids engaged. I personally enjoyed the Virtual Reality game with none other than Rafa. After watching big stars practice in close quarters and having taken few selfies with top players we were eagerly waiting to get a glimpse of the centre court. When we finally got in, we were in for a pleasant surprise to see the big man, Djoker Nole practicing. Standing next to him was Goran. My memory went back to the school days when we had a good lot of tennis fans in our class with each having our own favourite, Pete, Andre, Goran, Becker fighting over who will win the next slam.
Tumblr media
We visited Arc de Triomphe, Champ Elysée, Eiffel Tower and Louvre over the next couple of days.  The long wait at Louvre is obviously for Mona Lisa. It’s appreciable that artists of the yesteryear have been given a place of importance on par with rulers in the museum. The Nintendo virtual guide for the museum available for 5  euro is a class act.  The Seine River cruise helps you catch a glimpse of the heart of Paris from the comforts of the boat itself.  Despite India having so many great temple towns on the riverbanks we haven’t managed to make them (barring the temple) tourist attractions.  Ah! aren’t we still cleaning the Cooum???  The cruise services are top class catering to thousands of tourists a day.  The commentary in the boat about the iconic location along the river makes the trip even more interesting. Did I miss the Notre Dame.? I saw a movie about the devasting fire that almost brough down the cathedral on the flight back home. Had I seen it earlier may be, I could have been more conscious to catch a glimpse of the same from the boat.
Tumblr media
The last day of our trip was at the Parc Disneyland. At the metro station there is even a separate tab in the kiosk screen for buying tickets to Disneyland as one needs to change from a Metro to regional transit train. How thoughtful the city authorities are in making the tourists comfortable.  We reached a good 30 minutes early but still found hundreds of people ahead of us in the queue.  If its RG for me for kids its Disney.   It’s a beautifully designed park with plenty of attractions. The best amongst what we managed was the ‘Cars’ ride and a snack at “ Hakuna Matata” , remember from Lion King.  However, with improvement in standards of theme parks and standalone attractions likes 4D screens in malls in India the novelty factor is missing.  We surely have better “Merry go round” in our local exhibitions.  Given all this Disney surely is over hyped and overpriced.  They are just milking the brands they have created like the way B schools make money of the Executive programs.  The standout thing for me was the disable friendly nature of the park. We haven’t even thought of making our places of worship friendly to elders leave alone disabled.
Paris has some similarity with Indian cities’; 2 wheelers, breaking signals (at times), road rage (nowhere near India), graffiti on walls etc 😊. Paris is a very friendly city which is easy to move around. You are always on a walking distance from any metro. What we could learn from Paris is how to modernise without doing away with the past. Even as you stand on top of Eiffel tower there are hardly any skyscrapers. You feel you are in the 19th century Paris. When I compare that with Madurai, a city with 2000-year-old history one can do nothing but feel ashamed by the way some historic monuments are maintained. Our people (or politicians) only keep quoting the Tamil pride but, they care a damn. A visit to Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal will convince you of that.
As we boarded the flight overlooking the billboards of PSG with a smiling Mbappe, Neymar and Messi I started reflecting on this wonderful and peaceful trip.
While I believe that the last 2 generations of Europeans, western Europeans to be precise had it easy due to imperialistic loot; we need to give them their due for creating outstanding infrastructure through continuous investment in technology and more importantly keeping the consumer / citizen in mind.  Few things stood out,
·       All places with self-service kiosks have multi language option. So, with English one can go around these countries including France which has a long history of rivalry and war with Britain They have no qualms in embracing difference that could help assimilate and participate in the larger scheme of things. Here we are still fighting politically on 2 language policy. Does this fight really make any economic sense?
 ·       The trains in Switzerland have a small dustbin under every seat and it gets promptly cleaned at the end of every trip despite less utilisation. This was such an inspiration more than the snazzy coaches. Is it so difficult to replicate here in our country? I don’t think so, just that we don’t care, or we are not courteous to our fellow citizens. Being courteous is a simple but a great virtue. It such a powerful behaviour which could improve the quality of life by avoiding many acts of public nuisance. To add further let me quote an example from Zambia.   When one applies for a learner’s license for driving you are given a code which includes the Ten commandments of driving. The first one is about being courteous to other users of the road.
 ·       Be it the bus, train, or supermarkets there is hardly anyone out there checking for tickets/ bills. The fact they have managed to build a high trust society helps them to maintain high levels of productivity. This of course is possible only when a nation can ensure a certain standard of living for a large section of the population.
When the basics are provided by default and in a seamless manner, the mind is free to think of higher objectives. That probably explains why the sense of curiosity is more  natural to the citizens of the developed world.
