[EN] I know — the depth of field is too shallow. On my way home yesterday, I started testing the minimum focusing distance of that Sigma lens I mentioned. And honestly? It’s pretty decent. Too bad the wind, once again, managed to rob me of any joy from the walk. And today? It’s supposed to rain. As for tomorrow… I’m not even sure I’ll be able to fit in a walk at all. Time will tell.

In the meantime, a bit of stress is starting to creep in — tomorrow’s the communion. I was recommended by a photographer friend whose child is receiving the sacrament. It’s flattering. It’s a sign of trust. And it’s pressure.

Because when a photographer recommends another photographer, expectations double. There’s no room for missteps.

And of course — as always — there are a lot of variables. The weather? Total lottery. If it rains, the kids won’t be standing outside the church — they’ll be lining up… in the corridor. Yes, in the corridor. It’s a very particular church: the ground floor houses the parish rooms. Only a few steps up takes you to the actual sanctuary.

But weather is just the beginning. The biggest challenge — as always — is the kids. Because they’re kids. They yawn. They get lost. They look everywhere except where they’re supposed to. They forget when and where they need to go. They step into the shot. They block each other. Oblivious. Unprepared.

Each year I see it more and more — everything’s more relaxed. No one’s stressed. No one’s really bothered. I attended the dress rehearsal. Honestly? It looked like their second run-through — maybe. It certainly didn’t feel like a “general rehearsal.”

And that’s where I come in. Dressed in black. That’s my job: to find order in chaos. To divide and conquer. To catch everyone in frame. No yawning. No crooked smiles. No stumbles. And ideally — not stumbling myself while walking backwards.

And the light? Oh, the light. You could write a whole book on church lighting alone. And I don’t just mean that it’s dark — that, you can work with.

No — the real issue is how many different lights there are. Here: fake chandeliers. There: halogen spots. In the corner: a lone bare bulb — “as long as it glows.” Each source with a completely different color temperature. Every one a personal attack on any retoucher’s sanity.

Could you just kill it all with a flash? Theoretically, yes. In practice? Not in this church. First — it’s tall. Flash would need stadium-level power. Second — it’s all wood. Light gets swallowed up. Or bounces in ways you don’t want. Third — stained glass. Recently added. Deep, yellow stained glass. If there’s even a hint of sun, the whole scene looks like every child came dressed up as a… tiny Chinese lantern.

I’m probably forgetting a few things. But I think you get the picture.

So wish me luck. This isn’t my first communion shoot — but each one is a new test. A new balancing act.

[PL] Wiem — za płytka głębia ostrości. Wracając wczoraj do domu, zacząłem sprawdzać minimalną odległość ostrzenia wspomnianej Sigmy. I muszę przyznać: jest całkiem przyzwoita. Szkoda, że wiatr znowu skutecznie odbierał przyjemność ze spaceru. A dziś ma jeszcze padać. A jutro… jutro nie wiem, czy w ogóle zmieszczę spacer w harmonogramie. Czas pokaże.

Tymczasem dopada mnie lekki stres przed jutrzejszą komunią. Zostałem polecony przez znajomą fotografkę, której dziecko właśnie przystępuje do sakramentu. To miłe. To zaufanie. To też presja. Bo kiedy fotograf poleca fotografa, to oczekiwania są podwójne. Nie ma miejsca na potknięcia.

A zmiennych — jak to zwykle bywa — jest sporo. Pogoda? Totalna loteria. Jeśli będzie padać, dzieci nie ustawią się przed wejściem do kościoła, tylko… w korytarzu. Tak, w korytarzu. Ten kościół jest nietypowy: poziom zero to pomieszczenia parafialne. Dopiero po schodkach idziemy do właściwej części kościoła.

Ale pogoda to tylko początek. Największym wyzwaniem — jak zawsze — są dzieci. Bo są dziećmi. Ziewają. Gubią się. Patrzą wszędzie, tylko nie tam, gdzie powinny. Zapominają, kiedy i gdzie mają iść. Wchodzą w kadr. Zasłaniają inne dzieci. Nieświadome. Nieprzygotowane.

Z roku na rok obserwuję to coraz częściej — wszystko robi się bardziej „na luzie”. Nikt się nie spina. Nikt się nie przejmuje. Byłem na próbie generalnej. Szczerze? To wyglądało tak, jakby ćwiczyli to może… drugi raz. A na pewno nie jak próba generalna.

I tu wchodzę ja. Cały na czarno. Od tego jestem. Żeby się odnaleźć w chaosie. Dzielić i rządzić. Dopaść każdego w kadrze. Bez ziewania. Bez przekrzywionej miny. Bez potknięcia. I — najlepiej — nie potykając się samemu, idąc tyłem.

A światło? No właśnie. O świetle w kościołach można by napisać osobny tom. I nie chodzi nawet o to, że jest ciemno — z tym da się pracować.

Chodzi o to, że światła są cztery. A każde inne. Tu pseudo-kandelabry. Tam halogeny. W kącie żarówka „byle świeciła”. Każde źródło z inną temperaturą barwową. Każde jedno przyprawia retuszera o siwe włosy.

Zabić to wszystko błyskiem? W teorii: tak. W praktyce: nie tu. Po pierwsze — kościół jest wysoki, a błysk potrzebowałby mocy jak na stadion. Po drugie — cały drewniany. Światło się połyka. Albo odbija, ale nie tak, jakbyś chciał. Po trzecie — witraże. Nowo dodane, w intensywnym żółtym kolorze. Wystarczy trochę słońca i cała scena wygląda, jakby wszystkie dzieci przebrały się za… małych Chińczyków.

Pewnie nie wspomniałem o wszystkim. Ale mam wrażenie, że najważniejsze już wiecie.

Tak że życzcie mi powodzenia. To nie moja pierwsza komunia — ale każda jest nowym sprawdzianem. Nową gimnastyką.
