Executive Order 9066, issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942, led to the forced relocation of approximately 120,000 Japanese Americans living on the West Coast. More than two-thirds of these people were native born American citizens. They were confined for the duration of World War II in 10 inland internment camps operated by the military. Professional photographers, including Dorothea Lange, were commissioned by the War Relocation Authority to document their daily life.
[The] photographs documenting the notification, assembly, relocation and incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans from 1942 until 1945... are an extraordinary record, taken by some of our greatest photographers, of a terrible injustice and the incredible dignity and resilience of its victims.

We pulled out last year’s New Year’s Eve decor and crossed the zero off, replacing it with a 1. Because it’s #2020! Democratic New Year's Eve Cheer, a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman, shows the donkey (D), cheered by his party's new power, consoling the defeated elephant (R) as the old year sets over the horizon,12/31/1931, NARA ID 1692375.
Berryman’s 1931 cartoon reflects the political shift of the 72nd Congress. In the 1930 congressional elections, Republicans retained a slim majority in both houses of Congress. However, when the new Congress convened in Dec, 1931, some deaths/departures left vacancies in a number of Republican-held seats. Dems won a number of the special elections to fill those seats, shifting control of the House from R to D.
The National Archives’ Clifford K. Berryman Political Cartoon Collection includes 2,400 original cartoons by the political cartoonist from the U.S. Senate Collection, housed at the our Center for Legislative Archives. .

“The Unsentimental Wretch” cartoon by Clifford K. Berryman, ,12/30/1914, NARA ID 6011092. This illustration ran in the Washington Evening Star on December 30, 1914.
BAH HUMBUG: PANDEMIC HOLIDAYS
Not everyone delights in the holidays, and even fewer this year given the pandemic.  Cartoonist Clifford Berryman shows this “unsentimental wretch” seated at his desk, rapidly smoking the last of his holiday cigars while sourly remarking "I'm glad the holidays are nearly gone." His poor dog stares out from behind his master's chair, somewhat bewildered by the scene.
