Comic project 2020: Paper testing
Progress on my comics project! As I already have the ideas fully fleshed out for both my March and June comics, I went ahead and did some paper testing at the same time for both. These are simplified versions of the full pages - just to get a sense of how the papers treat the india ink and watercolours/other materials differently. I really want to use these as a way of testing out storytelling in a comic format, so I’m going to be sticking with the medium I know, rather than trying anything too far out of my comfort zone. That said.. I am very much challenging myself with the amount of HANDS and HUMANS I’m going to have in each of these, so.. bah, humbug, etc. I still have a way to go, but I am enjoying the process so far!

Tall Tale
Burt Munro Book Design Ideas.
Today I have been trying out some printing paper for my final designs. As I wanted to create a small book to demonstrate how my story book could read I thought I would have it printed in some nice cartridge paper.
After designing the book on Indesign I had it printed in A5 size and bound with blue binding.
Front cover before Text applied,
Tumblr media
Printed book,
Tumblr media
I thought about font colour which would tie in with the colour theme of  the illustrations. I am quite happy with it although it is only a mock up version for the moment.
Within this Tall Tale that I have been working on, I have to take on board ethics. It is a true fact based story slightly exaggerated to become a tall tale and I am aware that my version is aimed for Children to read. I want to give Children an insight to discover the true character Burt Munro and to learn more about his adventures and achievements to inspire them to believe in their dreams and take on challenges in life. I am not trying to encourage Children to take on dangerous activities and I have emphasised within the story how Burt had to think about his safety by wearing a helmet correctly and a race suit for protection. Should this story develop further in the future, consideration will be in place for ethical reasons.
I also tried a blue paper with a grain in it that gives an appearance of cracked paint in the image. I like it but it may not suit this project at the moment, perhaps other projects could bring me to use it again.

How Do Paper and Packaging Testing Labs Ensure the Durability of Packaging Materials?
In today’s fast-paced world of global trade and e-commerce, packaging materials play a crucial role in ensuring that products reach consumers in perfect condition. Packaging is not just a way to protect goods, but it also serves as an essential marketing tool. Whether it is for food, pharmaceuticals, or industrial products, the durability of packaging materials is paramount. One key player in ensuring packaging material durability is Paper and Packaging Testing Lab.
These labs are tasked with testing and evaluating the various physical, chemical, and environmental properties of paper and packaging materials to ensure they are fit for purpose. From corrugated boxes used for shipping large items to food packaging made from paperboard or plastic, testing labs provide the necessary analysis to verify that materials will protect products during storage, handling, and transportation.
In this blog, we will explore how Paper and Packaging Testing Labs contribute to ensuring the durability of packaging materials, helping manufacturers deliver safe, secure, and long-lasting packaging solutions.
1. Tensile Strength Testing
One of the key factors in determining the durability of packaging materials is tensile strength. Tensile strength refers to the ability of a material to resist tension or stretching. For packaging materials such as corrugated boxes, paperboard, or plastic films, it is essential that they maintain their structural integrity even when subjected to pulling forces.
Tensile strength testing is performed in a controlled environment where the material is stretched until it breaks. The point at which it breaks indicates its tensile strength. The stronger the material, the more durable it is when exposed to tension during transportation or storage.
Testing for tensile strength helps ensure that packaging materials can withstand handling stresses and external forces, preventing them from tearing or breaking under pressure.
2. Burst Strength Testing
Burst strength is another important test that evaluates the material's ability to resist pressure. Packaging materials such as kraft paper or corrugated cardboard are often subjected to external pressure or compression during handling and transportation. Burst strength testing simulates these conditions by applying increasing pressure to the packaging material until it ruptures.
For manufacturers, knowing the burst strength of packaging materials is essential for ensuring that the packaging can protect goods from external forces without compromising its structure. By performing burst strength tests, Paper and Packaging Testing Labs ensure that the packaging will not fail under the weight or pressure experienced during shipping, stacking, or handling.
3. Compression Testing
Compression testing is another critical test for packaging durability. Packaging materials often experience compression forces when products are stacked on top of each other during storage or shipment. If a material does not have sufficient compression strength, it could collapse under the weight, leading to damage or contamination of the packaged goods.
This test involves applying a compressive force to a sample of packaging material until it deforms or fails. By determining the amount of pressure a material can withstand before breaking, Paper and Packaging Testing Labs help manufacturers ensure that packaging materials will remain intact and structurally sound, even under heavy load conditions.
Compression testing is particularly important for products that will be stacked or transported in bulk, such as cardboard boxes or corrugated containers.
4. Moisture Resistance Testing
The presence of moisture can significantly affect the durability of paper and packaging materials. Materials such as paperboard or cardboard are particularly vulnerable to moisture because they can weaken, become soggy, and lose their structural integrity when exposed to water or high humidity.
Moisture resistance testing evaluates how well packaging materials can resist the penetration of water. This test typically involves subjecting the material to humid conditions or water exposure, then measuring the impact on its strength and structure.
For manufacturers, it’s essential to know how moisture-resistant their packaging materials are, especially for products that will be exposed to humid environments or the possibility of water leakage during transportation. Testing for moisture resistance ensures that the packaging will maintain its protective properties, safeguarding the contents from moisture-related damage.
5. Puncture Resistance Testing
Puncture resistance refers to the material's ability to withstand sharp objects or impacts without being punctured. Packaging materials, particularly those that are thin or flexible, can be vulnerable to puncturing, leading to product damage and contamination.
In puncture resistance testing, a sharp object is applied to the surface of the packaging material until it penetrates. The force required to puncture the material is measured, providing valuable insights into its durability.
Puncture resistance is especially important for food packaging, plastic films, and blister packs, where the contents must remain intact and protected from external contamination. By conducting this test, Paper and Packaging Testing Labs help manufacturers determine whether their packaging materials can withstand the rigors of handling and transportation without compromising the integrity of the product inside.
6. Tear Resistance Testing
Tear resistance is another critical factor in the durability of packaging materials. Packaging materials that are not tear-resistant can lead to packaging failure, resulting in product damage, loss, or contamination. Tear resistance testing evaluates how well packaging materials can withstand tearing when exposed to stress or force.
In this test, the material is typically subjected to a controlled force that causes it to tear. The strength required to tear the material is measured, indicating its tear resistance. Paper and packaging materials such as paper bags, plastic films, and paperboard cartons need to pass tear resistance tests to ensure they remain intact during handling, transportation, and storage.
Testing for tear resistance is crucial for ensuring that packaging materials can hold up under rough handling and remain functional throughout their life cycle.
7. Chemical Resistance Testing
Packaging materials are often exposed to various chemicals, whether through the products they protect or during transportation. For example, food packaging may come into contact with oils, acids, or other chemicals that can degrade the material over time.
Chemical resistance testing evaluates how well packaging materials withstand exposure to chemicals without experiencing damage or degradation. This is especially important for packaging materials used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, where contamination can pose significant health risks.
By conducting chemical resistance testing, Paper and Packaging Testing Labs help ensure that packaging materials do not break down or leach harmful substances into the products they protect, maintaining the safety and quality of the contents.
8. Environmental Resistance Testing
Packaging materials are often exposed to a wide range of environmental conditions, including temperature fluctuations, UV radiation, and exposure to air and humidity. Environmental resistance testing simulates these conditions to evaluate how packaging materials perform under various environmental stresses.
Testing labs subject materials to extreme temperatures, UV light exposure, or high-humidity environments to assess their long-term durability. This ensures that packaging materials will maintain their integrity and protective properties under varying environmental conditions, preventing degradation or failure during storage and transit.
9. Print Durability Testing
For packaging materials used in branding and marketing, the durability of the printed design is essential. Print durability testing assesses how well the printed labels, logos, or instructions withstand abrasion, exposure to light, and other environmental factors.
By testing print durability, packaging testing labs ensure that the branding remains intact and legible throughout the product’s shelf life, even in harsh environmental conditions.
Conclusion
Paper and Packaging Testing Labs play a crucial role in ensuring the durability of packaging materials. From tensile strength and compression testing to moisture resistance and puncture testing, these labs provide vital insights into the properties of packaging materials, helping manufacturers select the right materials for their products.
By testing the durability of packaging materials, labs ensure that packaging will protect the product throughout its life cycle, from production to transportation to storage.
