Whoop, whoop. Today I hit my 100th volunteer role at parkrun and 70th run. Well, I walked today, as a parkwalker, there to encourage walking as well as running. I'm well proud of myself.

I considered getting up early, in order to do a short run beforehand, but I decided that the hour it would take to walk the 5k was enough exercfor today. TGG ran also, and we headed out for lunch afterwards. It was not whole food, as it rarely can be when we eat out. I don't know any proper vegan restaurants so I go for plant based and go as healthy as I can. Today was a vegan sausage bap with sweet potato fries. Not overly great as there is a white bread roll involved and fries. The clue's in the name after all. And I have a lot of salt with them. I enjoyed every mouthful.

I went for a short walk afterwards, kidding myself it would burn some of the food off. Maybe it worked off a chip or two 😆 At best! Still, I did not give in to the temptation of my weekend rubbish food binge while watching rubbish telly. I had grapes and pineapple as a sweet treat. I'm such a good girl!

Dinner was a soup to use up veg and stop them going to waste. A big pot which I'll eat some of tomorrow too.

Large stock/sauce pan required.

500g diced onions

500g diced potatoes

500g diced carrots

200g dried soup mix

3 chopped bell peppers - only added to use them up, otherwise I'd have skipped them

Salt, black pepper, white pepper, dried sage and dried oregano to taste.

Add onion and dried soup mix to about 1 litre of water. Add all seasoning. Bring to a boil, then simmer for thirty minutes. Add carrots and potatoes and more boiling water and cook for twenty more. Add peppers and cook for ten more. The barley in the dried soup mix should be tender by now. I add water so the soup is quite a thick, chunky broth. Maybe others would prefer more liquid. Make it to taste and add more or less seasoning by the same rule. This is four portions to my mind at about 400 cals per portion, me thinks.

Very filling and definitely a whole food recipe. I deliberately did not use stock cubes for that reason. It was none the worse for it and I was happy it had less processed stuff in it. Veg, water and seasoning. Sounds pretty damn whole food to me!

Research into Park run

Park run is a UK company that organises weekly runs in parks around the country (Park run, n.d.). Although it is a simple idea, I like how it encourages people to get out into nature and spend a few hours each week exercising. The runs are free and encourage people to join their community in a positive setting, where they can run, walk, jog, volunteer or spectate (Park run, n.d.). I like how this makes the runs seem like a small community where you can go each week. his will not only encourage people to exercise but also gives them a change to socialise which will help fight loneliness. By allowing people who may not be able to run, to walk or volunteer they have made it accessible for the whole community.

Logo

I like how the logo is simple but easily recognisable. For the main webpage they have used a logo design that used the organisations names with the K forming a tree. However, for some of the advertisements and products, they use a variation of the logo, with only the image of the tree being shown. I like how both variations have a minimal design. The yellow background of the logo gives it a friendly tone that will makes it seem like a fun and helpful event.

The brand offers a varied range of merchandise in their shop, that they use not only to advertise the Park run, but also to raise money so that the Runs can be free for everybody (Park run, n.d.).

Although the shop website uses a muted blue to accent certain parts, they still use the same yellow as their main page to emphasise buttons and important information. This makes the shop website look a part of the brands visual identity instead of separate.

I like this concept because it allows people to keep track of what milestones they have completed. This will encourage them to keep coming each week. By using a colour system to represent each milestone, they have also made it easy for others to see what milestone others are at. This will make it something that people can be proud of. Including the barcode on the band will also save people hassle if they go to the runs every week as it stops them from needing to find the barcode on their phone which may get lost or not load. I like how the logo is noticeable but does not overwhelm all the other elements.

The bright pink colour makes it easy to see that people are a part of this community and makes it safer for runs in the dark or weather that may make it hard to see. I like the simple design of the logo on the front and name on the back because it will appeal to a variety of people with different clothing tastes. The bright colour also creates an excited and energetic tone. Using a zig-zag pattern under the logo draws attention to the logo and also stops it from looking out of place on the t-shirt.

Volunteer merchandise

The brand has not only created merchandise for people taking part in the run, they have also created bottles and other products for volunteers. This will help them feel a part of the community instead of being pushed to the outside. I like how this makes the event feel accepting and encourages people who may not be able to join the run or walk, help out and join in where they can.

From this research I have a better understanding of how a simple concept of people coming together to run in a park can create a large and accepting community. This has helped me to understand that I can make it available for all new mums, by offering the chance to walk or simply meet up at the finish location for those who may still be recovering. This will stop them from feeling isolated and give them a chance to find mums who will be experiencing the same emotions and problems that they are.

Enhanc3D Genomics raises 10m in Series A financing

Cambridge-based Enhanc3D Genomics Ltd has raised £10m in Series A financing led by BGF and Parkwalk Advisors. Existing private investors and Bioqube Ventures participated in Enhanc3D Genomics’ Series A financing.
