When creating the new Australian National University in 1946, the Australian parliament can probably be forgiven for being far too polite to ever raise the suggestion that the acronym ANU may one day lead to problems.
And so it is in the year 2023, that Australia's highest ranked university has to regularly remind people not to add a possessive 's' to their name in headlines, lest the web address be shortened like so:
Likewise the unfortunately named ANU Sports has to go to great lengths to make sure that their name never appears as an acrostic, or on a single line without spaces:
But the award absolutely must go to the ANU Soccer Club magazine, cheekily named 'SCUM' by a student in the 90s much to the ongoing horror of design teams to this day

Did you know that the name of the city of Canberra is an anglicisation of the original people of the area, the Kanberri, as stated by the national archives. Other proposed names were Austral, Australville, Hopetoun, Myola, Home or Wattleton. King O’Malley, minister for home affairs suggested Shakespeare! The capital city of Australia could have been called fucking Wattleton! Sounds like a joint in rural Vic with a population of 60 and 3 pubs with a crosstown footy rivalry treated like life or death

Teddy climbed his way through the Mount Ainslie Nature Preserve until he was standing above Canberra and able to look out over Australia’s capital city. The Molonglo River and the Anzac Parade were easily discernable below. Teddy figured if he spent more time around this city he might be able to distinguish other prominent features too, especially on this clear Australian day. Do you have a favorite capital?

1989: Australian voting laws are changed to require political parties to have 100 members before they can run for office, after the Australian Capital Territory election ballot sees entries from The Sun Ripened Warm Tomato Party, The Party! Party! Party!, and The Surprise Party.
Even with this requirement, The No Self-Government Party and their rivals The Abolish Self-Government Coalition gain almost 20% of the vote, gaining 4 seats in the Capital's parliament.
