River Wren was not the sort if woman to use a fainting couch. She would concede and use it like any other couch if someone else treated it like one, but she never deigned to use it in its intended fashion. This was doubly true for the fainting couch her supervisor had bought for her and placed in her office. The expensive "gift" came with so many unwanted advances on her she had wanted to use it as fuel for a parking lot bonfire. And so Brett thought it was appropriate to worry when River burst into the office, beelined to her fainting couch, and flopped onto it.
He tried to figure out what had happened. What could drive his superior into such out of character behavior. Ideas flitted through his mind, but none of them felt right. At long last, he asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," River responded, barely turning her face out of the cushions. Since her arrival, she had made no move, not even an attempt to get comfortable. "There is nothing wrong. It's just..." She trailed off into a sigh. "There have been developments with Bunnoj."
On the far side of the office, Zahra shot up, scattering pencils and papers off of her desk without a care "Share with us the murderchild developments?" she begged, bouncing on her feet. "What's our favorite blender been up to for the past few years?"
Her question drew a heavy sigh out of River. "Eyes and ears?"
Brett jumped into action, closing the blinds and sweeping the office. Zahra needed a moment to process the gravity of the response. She couldn't help but giggle with glee as she joined in on the work. This had to be good.
"So the good news is that she hasn't been active in Mylasj or the surrounding region since we last saw her. She straight-up could not afford to do anything there," River started, even while her subordinates had yet to complete their cleaning. "On a more personal note, she wanted me to tell you 'thanks,' Brett. She feels a lot better about herself now and made new friends." Zahra shot her a thumbs up and Brett quickly mirrored her gesture. "Among which are my daughters."
Zahra squealed and bounced up next to River, dragging a chair as she went. "How did they even meet? Heck, I thought Bitty Bun only spoke Mylisj!" she rambled while Brett furrowed his brow behind her. "What do they even do together? Are they just friends or are they just friends?"
"They have friends in common, and Noj is just as fluent in Parlish as she is in Mylisj." River finally rolled over and scooted over the cushions, searching for the most comfortavle position to recline in. "Apparently, they play Monsters and Madness together, and they're friends enough." She glanced over to Brett. "Friends enough for a slaughter."
Brett froze. "Warehouse district?" he led.
Zahra vibrated with excitement, waiting for River's response.
"All her."
The man breathed a sigh of relief while Zahra whooped. "Oh thank the gods we have a friend and not a wild copy-cat." He laughed a little as he slumped into his chair. "Can we sic her-"
"No."
The word stole Zahra voice as both she and Brett gawked at River.
She clasped her hands over her stomach and chewed on her words for a minute. "She likes the peace and stability here, and a small operation like last week isn't enough for her to willingly step in under normal circumstances."
"Small?" Zahra echoed.
"It doesn't help that she doesn't have any connections on this side of the pond and doesn't want to make any waves." River shook her head. "I'm not going to force her to work for us. That would turn Bunnaj against us, and that means-"
"All of Mylasj would want our heads on a pike," Brett finished. He grumbked. "Can you at least make an offer to her? See if she won't bite anyway?"
"I like leaving her free to keep my kids safe while I'm here at work, thanks."
"Wait, so we can't see her?" Zahra pouted.
"I didn't say that."
