Japanese Comprehensible Input, How Many Hours of Content:

As a companion to my last post, this post is going to link a ton of comprehensible input lessons and other resources that can be used as comprehensible input, and how many hours of content it adds up to. I'd like to shout out r/ALGhub that has a list of Aural Resources for Japanese, and CIJapanese has a Resources Page of other materials besides their own lessons that can be used for getting comprehensible input in japanese. CIJapanese.com has more videos on their site for a paid subscription, and a free youtube channel with lessons, I've only counted the youtube lesson hours in this estimate. I appreciate the cijapanese.com website and teachers, and may pursue using their paid video lessons in the future.

I would suggest that in addition to all of these video resources, you supplement using audio-only resources like the podcasts listed on https://cijapanese.com/resources, https://comprehensibleinputwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page#Japanese, and any other podcasts you can find and understand.

Other options to get more comprehensible input: children's cartoons if there's visual context clues, vlogs especially if they're vlogs about what they do in a day/the visuals directly relate to what's going on, audio books of graded reading materials you're reading (or TTS of the graded reading material if that's the only option available) - an app like Satori Reader with graded reading material and audio would work well, rewatching shows in japanese that you've seen before (japanese dubbed shows, anime in japanese dub, jdramas), replaying games in japanese that you've played before, watching let's plays of games you've played/seen before, new shows in japanese if your level of comprehension is enough to follow the main idea (shows where the visual context is related to what they're saying will be easier - such as romance shows, slice of life shows, some reality shows, cooking shows, action shows where they talk about what they're doing, crime solving shows where they talk about the objects in the scenes).

Honestly I recommend everyone learn just a littttle bit of CSS because it really is powerful and just makes bits and pieces of your internet experience more convenient.

Right now I'm cataloguing recipes I've really enjoyed, just trying to get them all in one place. Many of these are instagram recipes and, because I don't trust link rot (aka the possibility that the instagram link goes dead one day), I'm including a screenshot of the recipe along with the link.

But instagram on desktop... looks like this

I obviously could just copy-paste the recipe out of there. But a screenshot would be cleaner for how I'm cataloguing these.

And as-is, I'd have to scroll the whole height of that small right-side window about 4 times to fit it all.

But actually... I can just resize that div holding that whole right-side content

Basically I

hit f12 to open the dev tools

clicked the element finder

clicked on an element inside the recipe side

followed it up the tree until I found the element holding the whole recipe side (do this by hovering the div in the dev tools panel way on the right, then hovering upward and up until I find the element which is the highest up that still only contains the recipe-side content)

in the element.style part, set "width: 1000px" and "height: 1500px"

(I notice the width seems to still be less than 1000px, even though it got bigger)

likely suggests there's an element above it with a max-width set

go up the tree higher until I find the element with the max-width and uncheck that style

SOMETIMES, you can bypass paywalls if they're relying on something like overflow: hidden, or an overlay in the way, or some JS that runs (you can disable JS in the dev tools)

lost the jpg/png file you used for your profile picture and size doesn't totally matter? grab it from the img src while logged in. (you might even be able to find it in a bigger size by changing the url query parameters)

color contrast on an article really bad? find and change background color. find and change font color

want to make a funny fake screenshot without learning photoshop? just edit the page content in the dev tools

This isn't about like being good enough to write scripts or browser extensions. Really if you just have some basic HTML/CSS understanding a hat worth of tricks, you can make so many little adjustments in your favor.

1. the basics of gender, sexuality and romantic labels

tldr: its the same as in english but with a french accent. really, once you know how to say "sexual", "romantic" and "gender", you just add the prefix of your choice and voilà. to make it even easier, those words are VERY close to their english counterparts:

sexual = sexuel.le -> homosexuel.le, bisexuel.le...

romantic = romantique -> aromantique, panromantique...

gender = genre -> transgenre, bigenre...

but in the end, still like in english, we often shorten these words to their prefix alone: "je suis bi", "il est aro"...

and if you wonder about labels which don't follow this structure, i suggest you look it up for yourself, but there's still a 98% chance the term is The Same With a French Accent, exemples:

gay = gay (i shit you not)

lesbian = lesbienne

sapphic = sapphique

achillean = achilléen

non binary = non binaire

c'est vraiment aussi simple que ça :)

2. how to fuck this binary shit

if you're familiar with french, you probably know it's a gendered language, and maybe wonder how you can speak about people who don't wish to be gendered as masc or fem. the answer is inclusive writing (écriture inclusive), which i actually already showed you above, see:

fem form: bisexuelle

masc form: bisexuel

inclusive form: bisexuel.le

works the same for gendered nouns:

fem form: musicienne

masc form: musicien

inclusive form: musicien.ne

as you can see, in most cases, you can obtain the inclusive form of a word by combining their masc and fem form and a "separator" . i chose to use a simple period, but a hyphen or median point ("·" <- this thing) and probably more* can also be used - edit after seeing comments : take note that using a dot can sometimes fuck up screen readers and also be read as a website url!

in other cases (especially for words ending in -eux/-euse or -teur/-trice), inclusive form can be obtained by smashing the fem and masc form all together:

fem form: actrice

masc form: acteur

inclusive form: acteurice

*however, i need you to keep in mind

i am not a french teacher, just trying my best to explain a pretty complex mess. @ french speakers, if you see any mistake or anything i missed, please speak up.

inclusive writing is still being heavily debated, so it has no official guidelines, tbh even i freestyle it whenever i'm too lazy to look up how i should write something. is "lea" the correct inclusive form for "le/la"? fuck if i know but i sure will use it because who even knows.

and ofc inclusive writing is not only useful for non binary people, but also a tool for feminism that allows to get past the "masculine wins" rule (= when writing plurals, if a single item/person in the group is masc, the entire group must be gendered as such)!

3. mmh pronpuns

again, if you know french, you know we have no equivalent to "they" as even the plural forms for "she" and "he" are gendered. so there goes your only option if you're uninterested in either of those : neopronouns, my beloveds.

the most common one (and the one you should use when unsure of a person's gender or paired with inclusive writing to fuck that "masculine wins" shit) : iel, iels for plural. some other french neopronouns i saw include ael, ul, ol, ille, xel... but feel free to make your own up, this is what neopronouns are about. btw les francophones je suis curieux.se, si vous utilisez d'autres pronoms que elle/il/iel, dites moi quoi !

this is an example of the threats and harassment she has been receiving. ive seen a few different people get this ask copy pasted

the CEO of tumblr made a post wherin he publicly aired information regarding her deletion and threatened legal action against her , showing examples of the alleged death threats where no actual threats were made and telling people in the replies to just leave if they were unhappy with the moderation of the site

avery made a post about this and her new blog was again deleted within five minutes of her making it

multiple people who have made posts about the situation have said matt has DMed them and confronted them

this is word im hearing secondhand, so if i get any details wrong please correct me, but posts of hers such as her transition timeline are apparently ones that were flagged. i cant find any screenshots but many of her posts, including one that was a silly edit of a snow leapord wearing shoes, have been completely wiped from the site. if anyone has a screenshot or link to both the original post and it being deleted i can add it to this

Can you tell me how you post your art on Ao3? I keep trying and failing. Maybe it's my image hosting site?

Hey! Sure I'll attempt to explain. It's possible it's your hosting site, but hard to say. I use a site called Maltshop, or more accurately MLTSHP. It's been working great for me since I started using it but the downside is that it is a paid hosting service at $3 per year. I know not everyone can do that though, but if you're able to throw them $3 per year it could be worth it. At that tier they allow for up to 300MBs per month uploads. They have a $24 per year tier that is unlimited file size uploads. Another benefit - and this may not apply to you, but maybe someone who's reading this - is that they allow for Adult/Mature/NSFW whatever you want to call it image hosting.

Here's my process - and keep in mind this is just for adding an image. If I'm adding an image to a fic then I start a new post on Ao3, paste the fic in first, then add the image in the body of the fic where I want it also following this process:

I go to MLTSHP and upload my image. It thinks for a second then gives me two URLs. A "post url" and an "image url." I copy the "image url"

2. Then I go over to Ao3, click "new post," add all that necessary stuff it asks you to add like title, tags, summary, etc. then in the actual Work Text editor box I click "Rich Text." That's key as it defaults to "HTML" editor when you start your new post and while some people are awesome and good at HTML, I am not that "some people" and need my Rich Text editing box.

3. When you're in the Rich Text editor version of the Work Text box, click the little image icon

4. A dialogue box will pop up where you can paste that Image URL link from step 1 above. You can then add your Alt Text (called Image Description) and adjust the size of your image, then click save

5. Then I futz with the sizing for a bit, make sure all the necessary post info is included, add text if there's any to go along with your image - ya know like if you have a whole fic you're posting, then preview, then post the image and voila!

And that's my entire image posting on Ao3 process! I hope it helps, but if you need further help, feel free to DM me!
