Kerbal Space Program 1.7.2 is live!

In this patch we focused mainly on improvements and bug fixes for the Breaking Ground Expansion. We’ve included an animation for Kerbals when they interact with Deployed Science experiments, added sound effects to Laythe’s Geyser and the Cryovolcano on Vall, and some new color variants for the robotic parts. Additionally, now it will be easier to encounter surface features on celestial bodies. However, there’s a very remote possibility that some of the newly generated surface features could appear where an existing craft is positioned. So, although this is unlikely to happen, we do recommend creating a back-up. There are also bug fixes and a few improvements for the base game, particularly for the new axis group system. Now you’ll be able to tie the main throttle to an axis group.

Only works in a solid block of granite with perfectly infinite chickens

A long time ago, in an apartment far, far away...

This is a story from back when I ran a minecraft server for myself and a few friends. For reference, this server was running Minecraft 1.7.5, which means the most recent version was 1.7.2, which added a bunch of  things. To really date this, you just need to know it added flowers. Before that update, I’m pretty sure it was just daisies and roses. 

The server was great, and many shenanigans were had.

Then everything changed when the server crashed one night.

No problem, I thought. This has happened before, I thought. 

I rebooted the server, and it came up. Then I tried to log in, and waited. 

After a minute or so it timed me out. Weird. 

I rebooted it again. Same deal. 

After 30 minutes or so of failing to get in, I started looking through the logs, and found this:

This started as soon as the server started, and didn’t end until I stopped the server completely. Any attempts to log in were put on hold while the server dealt with its real priority: spawning an infinite number of chickens. 

Also of note is that y = 21 is well below ground level, which is generally between y = 40 and y = 70. This meant that not only were there infinite chickens, but they were actually trying to spawn in a block currently occupied by stone. 

Obviously, this wasn’t ideal. This was a while ago, but I think I panicked a little bit. 

All of my work, and my friends work, undone in an instant by a hard drive write error? Was my effort and time disappearing in a never ending sea of clucking, feathered demons?

But wait! There were programs that let you modify existing worlds. I loaded the world.dat in MCEdit, and saw the culprit. At -201,21,441 there was a solid  red block, indicating a large number of entities. MCEdit didn’t like how many there were and wouldn’t tell me the exact number, but I have guesses. 

I highlighted the chunk containing the feathered fiends and selected the “Delete” option. With a click, an unobtrusive patch of grass was suddenly void.

VOID FULL OF CHICKENS. 

The clucking fiends were still there! Floating in an unloaded chunk, Abyss below with no place for their fearsome talons to grab and rend, they still clung to existence, taunting me with their very physicality!

Cry, winds! Tell the tale of youth who knew not the evil he faced! Shriek through caverns of carvéd stone, bringing with you the words of dark magic he uttered while locked in eternal struggle with the teeming, endless masses of egg-laying domestic fowl!

I forced the world to rebuild, nay, reform! A blink of reality! A moment of nothing!

Still they taunted me, clucking and shunting side to side as they attempted to occupy a space normally reserved for a number of chickens smaller than infinity, like 3, or maybe even 20!

Delete entities, I cried, rage making my voice tear at my throat as though the chickens were in there like...walking around and pecking and stuff!

...

...

An hour later I had copied all the chunks of the world I cared about into a new world.dat and done the switchover. The server was working again. 

More out of curiosity than anything else, I saved off the .dat of the corrupt world and sent an email to mojang support. I don’t have their reply anymore, but I remember it being along the lines of:

“Huh. That’s weird. Can you send us the bad World.dat so we can look at it?”

They didn’t reply after that. 

I like to imagine that somewhere in Mojang headquarters, there is a closet no one goes into. Everyone new always asks whats in it, and the veterans turn to them and say 

“Best not to delve too deep, there is lava below y=10.”

 Then they wink and turn away. The newcomer’s curiosity is still piqued, but the closet is locked, so they forget about it. But if they borrowed the keys and came back one night...and opened the door...

they would find a server with more RAM than they have ever seen...

What is Apple Configurator?

Apple Configurator is a macOS application that allows administrators to create configurations and apply them to iOS devices. Before Apple Configurator, Apple offered iPhone Configuration Utility. Apple Configurator is the continuation of this sunset utility.

The range of configuration options in Configurator is extensive. Administrators can control minimum security requirements for passcodes, VPN configurations, on-device certificates, and even fonts. Generally, any configurations that can be applied via mobile device management (MDM) are also available in Apple Configurator.

Additionally, Apple Configurator provides the ability for an administrator to select which apps to install to iOS. Sign in with an Apple ID and select any app downloaded or purchased previously under that Apple ID.

How Does it Work?

With blueprints configured, place Apple Configurator in ‘prepare’ mode. Then, each iOS device connects via USB or lightning and Apple Configurator pushes the configuration to the device. Also during this time, administrators can wipe devices, upgrade iOS, place into supervision mode, enroll with an MDM, etc.

The process can be time-consuming if one’s upgrading iOS or switching to supervised mode (which requires a system wipe). In these cases, we find many administrators use high-capacity USB hubs. Though we haven’t used it personally, the Cambrionix PowerPad15 is an example of a USB hub for this very purpose.

Sidenote: If looking to purchase a hub, check the capacity of power to the hub. If the wattage is too low, devices may not charge while plugged in. Decide if this is a requirement for your organization.

Why Use Both Configurator and MDM?

After explaining the functionality of Apple Configurator, an often asked question is: So why do I need MDM if I can manage configurations and apps this way? The question is a fair one, and the answer largely depends upon your organizational needs.

Apple Configurator can provide parity with MDM for some organizations with limited requirements. The big difference is the ability to control configurations after deployment. With Configurator, once an administrator unplugs the device, no further communication occurs unless the device plugs back into a computer. With MDM, administrators control configurations via WiFi or cellular connection.

Limited abilities exist to manage apps in Configurator. It only enables the basic process of installing selected apps. However, MDM will allow administrators to distribute company-owned app licenses purchased through Apple Business Manager (formerly Volume Purchase Program – VPP) as well as remotely update and remove apps. MDM is even capable of pushing app-specific configurations.

MDM provides additional features that an administrator can enable remotely. They can lock a device, wipe its contents, and monitor app installation. MDM also allows an administrator to access advanced functionalities, like forcing a device to only display a single app. A great example is the Square point of sale system.

Organizations learn to establish a balance when using both technologies. Apple Configurator is able to make sure all devices run the latest iOS version, are supervised and have an initial WiFi network connection. MDM is then used for all further configurations and management.

How To Enroll With MDM Using Apple Configurator

Enrolling a device with MDM generally occurs via a link either sent to the device by SMS or email or manually typed into a browser. This is reasonable for only a few devices or if employees will be enrolling their own devices. It absolutely does not scale for companies with a large number of company-owned devices that need to be set up. Instead, an organization will generally use the Apple Device Enrollment Program (read Explained: The Apple Device Enrollment Program) to have devices automatically configured with their MDM out-of-the-box, or they’ll use Apple Configurator.

We’ll now explain how to configure a device with MDM using Apple Configurator. To start, if you haven’t already, download Apple Configurator from the Mac App Store. Install the app and run it.

Once the application is running, plug your device into the computer.

Next, click the ‘Prepare’ button from the top bar of the app.

Configurator will ask you which mode you’d like to use. Select ‘Manual’ unless you have an Apple Business Manager account and want to add devices to it.

Apple Configurator will ask you if you’d like to assign the device to an MDM. Select ‘New server…’ if you haven’t completed this process before. The following screen will allow you to specify a name for your MDM as well as the enrollment URL.

The process for getting an enrollment URL varies between MDM vendors. For SimpleMDM, you must create an Enrollment (either group or one-time) in order to generate the URL as shown below. Paste the enrollment URL into Apple Configurator.

The remaining steps are not MDM-specific. The prompt asks if you’d like to:

Supervise the device and block other computers from managing it

Provide information about your organization to display on the device

Skip certain set-up screens during the initial iOS startup

Create or use an existing configurator identity. This is essentially a certificate that allows you to re-access these devices down the road with Apple Configurator on the same or on a different computer.

Once you’ve completed these steps, Configurator will begin setting up the devices you selected initially or plugin subsequently. The devices appear automatically in your MDM as they configure.

We run Windows. Can I Use Apple Configurator?

The strict answer is ‘no’. Apple Configurator software is only for macOS; Apple does not distribute a Windows version.

The nitty-gritty answer is ‘sort of’. None of these methods are recommended and may provide more pain than gain, so we generally recommend that organizations in this scenario purchase a Mac Mini to have as a resource for around the office. If interested in going down the rabbit hole, here are some methods that we’ve heard employed:

Apple used to distribute a Windows version of the iPhone Configuration Utility. It’s still available on c net here. The last software release was January of 2013. At best it’s missing many features and at worse it won’t work at all.

Run macOS as a virtual machine on Windows. We’re pretty sure this breaks Apple macOS software licensing rules, so we cannot recommend this methodology. We’ve heard some reports that most virtual machine software handles USB emulation in a manner that causes issues when connecting and disconnection iOS devices, but we cannot confirm this.

Use Apple DEP instead. When using MDM, Apple DEP substitutes for Apple Configurator. Apple DEP devices are ready out-of-the-box, eliminating the need for USB/lightning connections and extra touches. Referenced earlier, you can learn more about Apple DEP via this article. If you’d like to use DEP, apply for an account at deploy.apple.com.

“The race is on.” Kelechi Iheanacho coolly throws down the gauntlet with Manchester United for a top-four finish. “Anyone can get into the top four, anyone can get into the top six.”

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, the Leicester forward expressed his admiration for United’s current form – which has seen the Foxes’ eight-point lead slashed to one since the restart.

“Bruno [Fernandes] is a top player. They’ve got Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba back in the team now. They’re flying. But that’s not what we need to worry about. We just need to focus on our games.”

Before lockdown, the Foxes were cruising to a third-place finish – guaranteeing Champions League football next season. But with just one win from five games since the restart, coupled with Chelsea and Manchester United finding their groove, the race for Europe looks set to go to the wire.

A spate of injuries to key players James Maddison, Ben Chilwell and Ricardo haven’t helped the cause. “Madders [Maddison], Chilly [Chilwell] and Ricardo are fantastic players. They have a big impact in the team. I love playing with them.

“But everyone can fill the gaps as well. Everyone knows what to do when you’re taking someone’s place.”

A fifth-place finish might be enough for Champions League qualification – if Manchester City’s ban from the competition is upheld and their appeal is unsuccessful – but Iheanacho clearly believes Leicester are masters of their own destiny. “I don’t know what’s going on with that but we’re just focusing on our games.”

And that fate could well be sealed on the final day when Leicester host United at the King Power.

The Nigeria international missed out on the Foxes’ maiden journey in Europe following their against-the-odds title win in 2015/16, when they lost to Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals.

He’s itching to compete among Europe’s elite again – more than three years after his last appearance in the competition with Manchester City. “We’ve worked really hard to get to this stage, so it would really be a dream.”

As a 19-year-old at Manchester City, Iheanacho had the best goals-to-minutes ratio of any player in Premier League history and he cherishes those heady early days.

“My Premier League debut was against Watford in 2015. I got a few minutes or so. It was truly heart-warming. So nice, being young and then scoring goals.

“There are young players doing well now and I’m happy for them, like Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood. You never know how it really feels until you start getting older and understand more.”

Game time was hard to come by at City and the lure of regular starts led to his £25m move to Leicester in 2017. “Everybody wants to play. No one wants to sit on the bench.”

But regular football has come in fits and starts at Leicester. Over the past three seasons, he hasn’t surpassed 1,000 league minutes – but that could change this campaign with 827 on the clock and four games to play.

This season, he made his first league appearance against Everton in December – four months into the campaign – and he seized that opportunity with a match-winning goal and assist. He’s been a mainstay in the team since.

The appreciation of that pivotal performance is clear to see. “First and foremost: that’s a moment that will be in my head for a long time.”

Just one week after that game, he replicated the return in a 4-1 win at Aston Villa, teeing up Jamie Vardy’s opener before doubling the Foxes’ lead.

But then the goals dried up. When lockdown paused the season, he was goalless in the Premier League this calendar year, despite a January purple patch in front of goal in domestic cups. The enforced break allowed him to take stock.

“We’ve been training at home and the coaches have been giving us work to do. It’s gone well. I was just keeping fit and training every day.” In moments of downtime, he’d watch movies or play FIFA. “I like cooking as well and spicy African dishes have been on the menu,” he adds.

The break certainly served him well. Shortly after the restart, he broke his 2020 league duck in the 2-1 defeat to Everton this month and scored again in a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace just three days later. And there’s been a positional tweak on the pitch, too.

Leicester abated one of their top-four rivals, Arsenal, on Tuesday – capitalising on Eddie Nketiah’s dismissal to salvage a 1-1 draw at the Emirates. In that game, Iheanacho started on the right of a front three, in a 3-4-3 formation – a position he’s happy to occupy in the future.

“It’s not the first time I’ve started there. It’s not really right wing. It’s two strikers and one behind me and Jamie [Vardy]. Sometimes I drift off to the right, so I’m more inside.

“Playing with Jamie is an honour. He’s a top finisher, so whenever he plays and scores he inspires me, because I want to repeat that.”

So does he fancy emulating the likes of Mohamed Salah in that right-sided role? “Mo Salah is Mo Salah!” he jokes. “If I find myself in that position, I’ll just crack on. We just need to play according to the plans.”
