#Patternmaking, #sewing, #draping... they are all the same. Once you wear or fot a pattern, you’re dealing. Anything you’ve draped is inherently a pattern, and every decision you make in those is based on what finishes and construction techniques you’re deciding to use or needing to use for the situations in the garment/ fabric/ situation. And of course you won’t have all the answers at once when you’re starting out. ITS OKAY. The beginning often feels like the hardest part because you are just getting your foundations in all of these interdependent things while still not knowing all the things. But this is how you form your questions, get super-curious, focused, open, and roll up your sleeves. It’s delicious. Always get back to that curiosity and that joy. It should never have to feel like some uphill- struggle or geometry class train relived. INSIST, DECIDE, KNOW, CHOOSE that this gets to be FUN for you. And you get to get it, and you get to be good at it. Today we eliminated darts and created a smooth, shaped yoke to fit our skirt dartlessly. the lower portion we slashed...... and are still thinking 🤔 will we make it into #pleats? #gathers? #flares? Or keep it as one simple fitted straight skirt panel!? This is from an old annual @parsons_fashion benefit fashion show program booklet - 2000 -Teaching #fashiondraping pregnant with my oldest daughter who is now 19! This project was the circle skirt, draped by pinning, clipping and pivoting the flares in by hand (each quarter of the skirt had a different hem só students could practice different #sewing techniques for hand and machine). So one quarter was machine finished with the “baby hem”, one of my all time favorite finishes. One quarter was folded and machine stitched with a 1/2 “ hem, which is a bit challenging on such a curved hem. One quarter was gemmed with a separate, drafted, shaped facing (#Patternmaking skills) and then graded, pressed, and hand invisible tacked into place (unlined skirt). The last portion had a 1-1/2 or 2” hem allowance, gently steamed upward, with a gather stitch at the upper edge of the hem allowance so you could “condense” all of the excess fabric and steam it pretty flat and This one was also invisible hand stitched into place. It’s so wonderful to learn hand stitched and machine stitches that allow you to mold, control, and manipulate fabrics and garments to do your will. It’s deeply gratifying, satisfying, and perpetually fascinating.
