going back to work after years of not working is challenging tbh

long post so settle in

when i was at the nail tech school tour, the owner (director, i think is her official title?) asked me why i wanted to be a nail tech. this is something my therapist prepared me for!

one of the goals i had for therapy was gaining enough confidence to career switch. i was unemployed for the longest time, had a brief but unsuccessful stint at a local game store, and have been unemployed since. i refused to go back to retail and needed to switch.

my therapist would always notice my nails during a session. they are well-manicured and the color was always different each session. they are also my natural nails.

after a couple of unsuccessful tries at finding something out there for me, she asked to see my nails up close. she got me talking. since we communicate using telehealth, i showed her the nail polish collection i’ve amassed for 18 years, neatly organized in an ikea file cabinet.

she was impressed. nearly every color has its own drawer. she remarked, “i think this is what you were meant to do, patton. i think you should pursue this.”

i told her a story. it goes like this:

when i was a little kid, my mom would do my nails. my mom had a modest polish collection, stored in a small wooden box. they were older polishes, based on what i currently know. not from the 90s, when i was little, but earlier. some of them probably dated back to the 70s, but they were still good. back then, the range of colors was nowhere near as wide as it is now. it was pinks and reds, maybe a plum purple. my mom would paint my nails pink.

then in 1995 (i don’t know why i remember that year, but i do), the game changed. revlon had just put out its street wear line. finally! more than just pinks and reds and maybe that purple. there were blues, greens, yellows, even a black! i went gaga. my first one was a dark blue.

my auntie got me a markwins polish set for christmas when i was 13. it was HUGE. i think it was a 30-polish set. while everything else in the house may have been an absolute clusterfuck of a hoarder mess, i held on to my polishes.

when i moved out and out-of-state, i had three polishes in my possession — a frosty blue from mary kate & ashley (yeah, those twins), a orange from wild n’ crazy, and a sheer sky blue from revlon called bright sky. i still have the latter two! and i did my nails with bright sky last week!

i began to amass my collection once more. my mom was diagnosed with cancer shortly after i left home, and by 2009, my mom was dying. she signed a dnr (do not resuscitate) order, and by late summer/early fall, the time had come. my mom was in too much pain to continue. she was in at-home hospice care, in a hospital bed, hooked up to a morphine drip. i made my final visit. i was spending what little time i had left with my mom, watching tv, getting out any final stories we wanted to share.

my mom wanted me to do her nails one last time. she knew i brought polish with me, i always did any time i traveled. she picked out two colors — korean fruit and flower stand by carolyn new york for her hands (a light peachy coral crème) and cherry glaze by sally hansen salon for her feet (a slightly jelly neutral red)

it came around full circle.

my therapist was right. i was meant to do this.

when the director asked me why i wanted to be nail tech, i simply said, “my mom would paint my nails when i was a little kid. when i was older, i would paint hers. it’s something that i’ve always loved.”

she loved it. when i was leaving, she said, “i thing you’re going to do well here. you’ve got style, your pink hair is very nice!”

been making some big moves my friends!

i’m going to nail tech school next month! i would like to give a shoutout to my therapist for helping me realize that i do have potential, she is absolutely amazing (and if you’re in the hampton roads area i’ll absolutely hook you up, you deserve only the best)

i took a little tour on tuesday and it’s such a good fit for me. i met the owner, she is so nice and motivating! i’m nervous but i know it’s because it’s new and the drive back is a little scary (getting there is easy breezy tho)

i’m excited and nervous and also hopeful and confident i can do this. i know there will be setbacks but i will have more agency in my new career and it’s something i’ve always loved

2019 ford fusion hybrid safety rating: like a boss

i got into an accident and my car kept me safe. i’m not sure if it’s able to be fixed, it looks kinda borderline. my car is a fuckin boss though, it immediately called 911 on impact and showed the details of the crash location on my screen so it was much easier for first responders.

fuckin love my car. i hope it’s able to be fixed because the crash safety features are 10/10 and it’s so nice to drive. the adrenaline is wearing off and i’m just sad now

so in elder scrolls (serrill and daeris’ first iteration), daeris becomes leader of the skyrim chapter of the dark brotherhood after usurping astrid. a traveling salesman named serrill is an unwitting but friendly ally. he even gets a nickname, “butterfly”, for his gregarious, sunny, and optimistic nature (for the most part— serrill does have a slightly darker side that is well-hidden)

serrill is a dealer in borderline legalish/illegalish wares, most notably an herb that makes one feel relaxed and happy (yes, i made him a stoner). once he knows about daeris’ status eventually, he’s shaken, but comes to terms with it. he sees the positive in the dark brotherhood, after much thought and an intense wrestling with his conscience

it’s a play on morality with the two of them that i absolutely love and have continued through other iterations, though i’ve mellowed them out with age (and considering milder universes as well)

also i’m going to san diego with huns for our 15th anniversary (which was actually on tuesday)! and we’ll be able to see our friends! huns’ friend is a longtime childhood friend, he moved out there to fulfill his dream of being a master brewer. he’s really cool. my friend is one i met on an animal crossing discord server and we’ve been friends for nearly three years now!

the hope is that we can all go to a padres game together (baseball), everyone has expressed interest. even my non-sports inclined friend, because she has never gone! i told her it’s just chillin with your pals if you’re not invested in the game, and to get the ice cream in a little plastic helmet and she was totally down

she also has a zoo membership! and she can get one of us in for free! it’s something we def want to see

huns was there for a summer when he was five (navy brat), and he says it was one of the best summers ever. i saw a photo of little kid him with sun-bleached blond hair (he has dark brown hair), and it was so adorable. i’ve always wanted to go out west. this is so perfect and i’m excited and wow

fuckin wild ass week y’all. there was a shooting on my block this week and i was on the news. a hero nurse that lives on my block pretty much saved that kid’s life. dude is legend.

the neighborhood came together. our block is full of amazing people with big hearts. we hope to have a block party this summer where it’s like one giant cookout ❤️

Please tell me more about the african radio stations? That sounds dope as hell and I'm looking for new music!

there’s an app i use called radio garden, and you can access radio stations from all over the world! the farther out they are, the better they usually are because you’ll hear all kinds of music you’ll never hear otherwise!

the fave i mentioned is Miraya FM in Juba, South Sudan! another African fave of mine is Alefamusic (Antsiranana, Madagascar); it’s mostly traditional Malagasy music and I never heard anything quite like it before

Other faves of mine: Radio Aku-Aku in Hanga Roa, Chile (Rapanui, aka Easter Island), Radio Trassa (Blagoveshchensk, Russia), Radio Provinciya (Derazhnya, Ukraine), Apparatið (Reykjavík, Iceland), Dr Dick’s Dub Shack (Hamilton, Bermuda), Times Square FM (Basrah, Iraq), Kwesi FM (Mahmoudzou, Mayotte — it can be hard to reach sometimes).

I’m finding new stuff all the time, though!

african radio stations go so hard, these are probably my fave stations to listen to in the entire world. one of my current faves is a south sudanese station that plays a lot of choice 80s music but also plays other music too
