All But One of Us Will be Dead Chapter 5
"Paul pressed his ear to the door – it was definitely gunfire. He gritted his teeth. Whoever was down there would certainly kill all the girls – they weren't ready to defend themselves. If he'd had the time he’d have been sorry, but he was too full of fear and desperation for anything else.
He trembled, curled up in front of the door, his leg aching horribly from the struggle of crossing the room. He was certain that whoever was downstairs would come for him soon.
These were his last minutes. How pathetic.
Would they shoot him in the head and end it quickly? Or would he bleed out slowly on this hard wood floor, his last sight a whitewashed ceiling and that little scrap of gray sky through the window? And how was it that the sky was still whole, still fixed above them, when by all rights the world should have come tumbling down by now?"
