Here we are with WrestleMania II, otherwise known as the tri-venued WrestleMania. The Orndorff/Muraco bout was good, but short. Just as the opener was revving up, there was the dusty finish. The matchup could have gone a few more minutes, giving a clear winner in the curtain jerker. The Savage/Steele encounter, although short, was good for what it was. An early match in Savage's WWE run to get him over. The same could be said about the Jake/Wells. They could have had Savage and Jake face off and not have two jobber matches consecutively at a WrestleMania, For the New York main event, did they really introduce Joan Rivers as Joan Crawford? Nice flub there, Fink. The boxing match (Piper/Mr. T) was a measly 4 of 10. Two for the match itself, with two extra points just for the ending.

The Chicago subset of this WrestleMania was nothing special. The quick Women's Championship (as was the style at the time) and the Flag match just kinda happened. The battle royal was not that good, but battle royals are still cool. Like bad pizza, it's still pizza. The best of the Chi-Town section was the Bulldogs/Dream Team Tag Titles match. They may have been called the Dream Team, but the 2000s Dream Team was imminently and immensely better.

On to the Los Angeles front, there ain't much to say. Steamboat/Hercules was an okay, albeit slow match. Elmer/Adonis was just ridiculous, and the Funks/Tito and Junkyard Dog tag match was good. The main event was the best of this WrestleMania as a whole, and it doesn't even seem close.

This just seemed like a mediocre WrestleMania in retrospect. It may have been only the second in the chronology, but the booking seemed nearly non-existent. Five of the twelve matches had any semblance of an angle to them.

The upcoming benefit, celebrating the New York Public Library's Billy Rose Theatre Division, honors George C. Wolfe and the late Harold Prince.

Additional artists have joined the upcoming I'm Still Here benefit, celebrating the 90th anniversary of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts’ Billy Rose Theatre Division and the 50th anniversary of its Theatre on Film and Tape Archive.

Honoring Tony-winning directors George C. Wolfe and the late Harold Prince, I’m Still Here will stream on Broadway on Demand June 23 at 8 PM ET.

Jason Robert Brown, Savion Glover, Priscilla Lopez, Susan Stroman, Marisha Wallace, and Christopher Wheeldon have joined the starry roster of participants. The evening, as previously announced, will also feature archival content of several Broadway productions preserved in the archive, including the newly announced Angela Bassett and Samuel L. La Comuna de París, 150 años en la memoria revolucionaria

Ninguna derrota es enteramente una derrota, pues el mundo que abre es siempre un sitio hasta entonces insospechado. William Carlos Williams (1883-1963)

El 28 de mayo de 1871 la Comuna de París fue definitivamente aplastada y reprimida con una violencia inédita. La sangría, descrita con detalle por John Merriman en su libro Masacre (2014), fue espantosa y, aunque sea imposible saber la cifra exacta, se saldó según este historiador con al menos 17.000 muertos, aunque también se aventura a decir que podrían ser el doble. La Comuna desapareció, pero con su final, y pese a sus solo 72 días de existencia, pasó a la historia, a la memoria y al mito. Una vez vencida, ya no era solo un hecho del pasado, sino también uno del futuro o, si se quiere decir con Marx, incluso de la eternidad. Cuatro décadas más tarde Lenin aún apuntará que “la causa de la Comuna es la causa de la revolución social, es la causa de la completa emancipación política y económica de los trabajadores, es la causa del proletariado mundial. Y en este sentido es inmortal”.

Hay que tener en cuenta que en esas diez semanas ocurrieron muchas cosas que encaminaron París hacia el desarrollo de una república democrática y social que conscientemente rompía radicalmente con la situación precedente. Como se puso de relieve en la Declaración al pueblo francés del 20 de abril de 1871,

La Revolución Comunal, iniciada por la iniciativa popular del 18 de marzo, inaugura una nueva era de política experimental, positiva y científica. Es el fin del viejo mundo gubernamental y clerical, del militarismo, del funcionarismo, de la explotación, de la especulación, de los monopolios, de los privilegios, a los que el proletariado debe su servidumbre y la Patria sus desgracias y desastres.

Por supuesto, el continente europeo no permaneció indiferente a lo sucedido y en seguida se captó la importancia de una revolución que se consideró como la primera verdaderamente proletaria. Las reacciones adversas fueron terribles y no escatimaron adjetivos a la hora de censurar un episodio que les había hecho estremecer. La fiebre anticommunard se manifestó por doquier y no solo a nivel político. Por ejemplo, también lo hizo a nivel literario, algo que retrató Paul Lidsky en su clásico Los escritores contra la Comuna (1970). Entre otros, Edmond de Goncourt no se contentó únicamente con condenar a los communards, también celebró en su diario la salvaje represión con palabras como estas:

Está bien. No ha habido ni conciliación, ni transacción. La solución ha sido brutal. Ha sido fuerza pura. La solución ha apartado los espíritus de los compromisos cobardes. La solución ha devuelto la confianza al ejército, el cual ha aprendido en la sangre de los communeux que todavía era capaz de combatir. En fin, la sangría ha sido absoluta: y las sangrías como ésta, al matar la parte batalladora de una población, aplazan por el término de una conscripción la revolución siguiente. Son veinte años de descanso lo que la antigua sociedad tiene por delante, si el poder se atreve a todo lo que puede atreverse en este momento.

La inquietud generada por la Comuna se manifestó en hechos como la iniciativa del Imperio Austro-Húngaro de formar una contra-internacional capitalista finalmente de poco éxito. Como ha recordado David Harvey, la entonces controvertida construcción de la famosa Basílica del Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, que se comenzó a edificar en 1875 y se erigió en el mismo lugar de los hechos del 18 de marzo, fue no solo relacionada como la derrota de Francia contra Prusia sino también con los hechos de la Comuna, cuyo recuerdo debía expiar. Por su parte, Adolphe Thiers, el presidente de la república francesa y principal responsable de la represión, llegó a señalar que, de manera retroactiva, era necesario considerar como un nuevo delito que se añade a todos los que la legislación penal tiene como objetivo reprimir, esta participación en una sociedad cuya existencia misma es un delito, ya que su objetivo es asociar a los malhechores (malfaiteurs) extranjeros a los esfuerzos de los malhechores franceses, ya que sus miembros no tienen ninguna nacionalidad.

Hay que tener en cuenta que el episodio de la Comuna produjo la difusión de todo tipo de teorías de la conspiración que pretendían explicar el estallido de ese repentino e imprevisto acontecimiento. Eso condujo tanto a la popularización (y proscripción) de la Primera Internacional, descrita en seguida como la gran urdidora de lo acaecido, como también a la del mismo Marx, considerado como el más importante instigador de la revolución y tachado de “gran jefe de la Internacional” por la prensa hostil. Marx le explicó entonces a Ludwig Kugelmann que su escrito sobre el tema La guerra civil en Francia “está teniendo una resonancia demencial y tengo el honor de ser en este momento el hombre más calumniado y más amenazado de Londres”.

La amnistía no llegaría hasta 1880, una vez que la Tercera República Francesa se hubo consolidado y en las mismas fechas en que recuperó la Marsellesa como himno oficial (1879) o en que instituyó el 14 de julio como día nacional (1880). En verdad, el recuerdo del lejano 1789, una vez domesticado y atemperado, debía servir para enfrentarse tanto a las tentativas de restauración monárquica de la época como al cercano y perturbador recuerdo de la Comuna.

Desde el otro lado político, y con la salvedad de excepciones entonces llamativas y criticadas como la de Mazzini, la Comuna fue ampliamente admirada y ensalzada desde los movimientos revolucionarios, a lo que también ayudó la crudelísima represión que convirtió en mártires a los communards asesinados. Para el mismo Marx se trataba de “un nuevo punto de partida cuya importancia histórica es universal” y, al final de La guerra civil en Francia, añadió que “el París de los obreros, con su Comuna, será eternamente ensalzado como heraldo glorioso de una nueva sociedad. Sus mártires tienen su santuario en el gran corazón de la clase obrera”.

Desde el movimiento anarquista no faltaron los elogios. Bakunin no se olvidó de la represión y señaló que “París, inundado en la sangre de sus hijos más generosos, es la humanidad crucificada por la reacción internacional coligada de Europa” al mismo tiempo que enfatizaba que esta ciudad, con su ejemplo revolucionario, había inaugurado una nueva era, “la de la emancipación definitiva y completa de las masas populares”. Arthur Arnould añadió que a partir de ahora habría dos grandes fechas en la historia de la liberación humana, 1789 (que definía como la revolución política acaparada por la burguesía) y el 18 de marzo de 1871 (la revolución social y popular). Por su parte, Kropotkin apuntó que “bajo el nombre de Comuna de París, nació una idea nueva, llamada a ser el punto de partida de las revoluciones futuras” y añadió que “entusiasma, no por lo que ha hecho, sino por lo que promete hacer el día que triunfe”. En esta misma línea, Elisée Reclus destacó que:

la Comuna (…) ha establecido para el futuro, no por sus gobernantes sino por sus defensores, un ideal bien superior al de todas las revoluciones que la habían precedido (…). Por todos lados la palabra «Comuna» ha sido comprendida en el sentido más amplio como en referencia a una humanidad nueva, formada por compañeros libres e iguales, ignorando la existencia de antiguas fronteras y ayudándose de manera mutua y en paz de un extremo al otro del mundo.                

La Comuna parecía inaugurar una nueva era llena de esperanza en la que ella misma devino el casi ineludible referente a la hora de enfocar o repensar la revolución. No debe extrañar que tanto comunistas como anarquistas quisieran apropiarse de su legado y de adoptarla como una materialización de sus propias ideas. Eso explica que Engels pudiera ver en ella una muestra de la dictadura del proletariado, mientras que Bakunin, pese a admitir que la mayoría de sus miembros eran jacobinos, describiera su desarrollo como una “audaz negativa del Estado”.

La memoria de la Comuna fue cultivada sin cesar, y no solo en Francia sino a nivel internacional. A ello ayudó que la represión y persecución de los communards desembocase en un numeroso exilio que diseminó sus ideas y sus recuerdos por cuantiosos países. Proliferaron los textos de testimonios de la Comuna, entre los cuales destacó La historia de la Comuna (1876) de Prosper-Olivier Lissagaray, convertida en seguida en la obra de referencia para comprender lo sucedido, pero también los de otros participantes como Gustave Lefrançais, Gaston Da Costa, André Leo, Benoît Malon, Jules Vallès o Louise Michel, una de las heroínas de la Comuna. Por cierto, en España se publicaron en seguida los dos volúmenes de La historia de los comuneros (1871 y 1872) de Ramón de Cala, en cuyo texto subrayó que esta revolución había estado protagonizada no por grandes líderes individuales sino por ese “gigante anónimo que se llama pueblo”. Además, el libro contenía un prólogo de Pi y Margall, quien ensalzó la Comuna por superar el legado jacobino y encaminarse hacia una vía federal.

La memoria de la Comuna se cultivó asimismo en otros campos como el musical, donde Le temps des cerises, compuesta en realidad poco antes de los hechos de 1871, se convirtió en una especie de himno communard. Su autor, Jean Baptiste Clément participó activamente en el acontecimiento y también legó otras obras como La semaine sanglante, que seguía la partitura de Le chant des paysans de Pierre Dupont. Además, no hay que olvidar que la letra del famoso himno La Internacional fue escrita en 1871 por Eugène Pottier, otro participante en los hechos de la Comuna.

Sin embargo, a la hora de la verdad no todo fueron elogios. En definitiva, la Comuna había terminado en fracaso y había que preguntarse el porqué. El mismo Marx había deslizado algunas críticas, pues reprochó a los communards que no marchasen directamente hacia Versalles, que no tomaran el Banco de Francia (algo también criticado por Engels o Lissagaray) y que el Comité Central dejara demasiado rápido el poder para instaurar la Comuna. Por su parte, y pese a valorar los heroicos y honestos esfuerzos por superarlo, Bakunin lamentó la pertinaz pervivencia del imaginario jacobino entre los communards. Kropotkin añadió como críticas que la revolución no lograra extenderse entre los campesinos, que no rompiese verdaderamente con la estructura estatal y que no osase emprender la auténtica revolución social.

Al mismo tiempo que un episodio de referencia, la memoria de la Comuna se convirtió en un espacio de debate y de litigio intelectual, al que ampliamente se refirieron los principales activistas y pensadores revolucionarios del último tercio del siglo XIX y de inicios del XX, sobre todo hasta el estallido de la Revolución Rusa. No solo Marx, Engels, Bakunin o Kropotkin se detuvieron a reflexionar sobre y desde la Comuna, también lo hicieron otros como Lenin, Trotsky, Kautsky o Mehring. Este último advirtió que “la historia de la Comuna de París se ha convertido en la piedra de toque sobre la táctica y la estrategia que la clase trabajadora revolucionaria ha de emplear para alcanzar la victoria definitiva”.

En este contexto podemos entender el gran rol de la memoria de la Comuna en el transcurso de la Revolución Rusa, ilustrado por una famosa anécdota histórica. Según se cuenta, después de que la revolución hubiera durado más de 72 días, Lenin se habría puesto a bailar en pleno diciembre y en medio de la nieve frente al Palacio de Invierno para celebrar que “su” revolución había superado la vida de la Comuna. Con ello se festejaba que la Revolución Rusa había desplazado a su referente y se había convertido en el nuevo modelo a seguir en la tradición revolucionaria.

Además, Günter Grützner ha señalado que en aquel contexto se produjo una suerte de culto de una Comuna también muy presente a nivel cotidiano: en la toponimia urbana, en el paisaje monumental, en el calendario (con el 18 de marzo como festivo), en el vocabulario del día a día (según Richard Stites, y frente a otras de raíz rusa como obschina, la misma palabra kommuna también comenzó a popularizarse por entonces en Rusia e incluso en el nombre de diarios como el Severnaia Kommuna (la Comuna del Norte), el más importante de Petrogrado. Y eso por no mencionar las alusiones más indirectas, como la Internacional (himno oficial de la Unión Soviética de 1922 a 1944) o la bandera roja. En 1929 Grigori Kozintsev y Leonid Trauberg dirigieron La nueva Babilonia, importante largometraje que narraba los hechos de la Comuna y que fue parcialmente censurada por Stalin. Unos años antes la primera mitad del famoso espectáculo Hacia la Comuna Mundial se había dedicado a los hechos de 1871.  

Esta influencia también se percibió ampliamente en los escritos compuestos antes y durante la Revolución Rusa, y de nuevo en figuras tan relevantes como Trotsky, Zinoviev, Preobrazhenski o, en especial, un Lenin que no paró de reflexionar desde su recuerdo, el cual venía en buena parte mediado por La guerra civil de Francia de Marx. Como hemos analizado con detalle en este texto, es muy interesante observar cómo la valoración de la Comuna sufrió variaciones conforme cambiaban los acontecimientos de la Revolución. Si bien siempre mantuvo su consideración de acontecimiento memorable y ejemplar, uno reiteradamente utilizado por Lenin en textos como El Estado y la revolución (1918) para justificar sus posiciones políticas, más tarde se redujeron sus menciones o, como fue particularmente notorio en Trotsky, incluso se prefirió airear sus defectos. Una buena muestra es este fragmento de Terrorismo y revolución (1920).

Nosotros veneramos el recuerdo de la Comuna a pesar de su experiencia demasiado limitada, de la falta de preparación de sus militantes, de la confusión de su programa, de la ausencia de unidad entre sus directores, de la indecisión de sus proyectos, de la excesiva turbación en las ejecuciones y del espantoso desastre que resultó de ella. Saludamos en la Comuna —según una expresión de Lavrov— a la aurora, aunque pálida, de la primera república proletaria.    

Por el camino habían ocurrido episodios relevantes como la disputa entre Lenin y Kautsky, a quien Trotsky respondió más tarde con el citado Terrorismo y revolución. Antes, el considerado como líder intelectual de la Segunda Internacional había criticado el desarrollo de la Revolución Rusa en su libro La dictadura del proletariado, y lo había hecho mientras apelaba a la memoria de la Comuna como ejemplo de una revolución mejor. Lenin respondió furibundamente con otro libro, La revolución proletaria y el renegado Kautsky, pero cada vez se matizará más la memoria de la Comuna, de la que se recordará que había fracasado por culpa de su excesivo moralismo o por no haber formado un partido organizado, centralizado y disciplinado que hubiera sabido tomar la iniciativa en los momentos decisivos.

Por otro lado, más tarde estalló la rebelión de Kronstadt, la cual se fundó como una comuna revolucionaria que en reiteradas ocasiones apeló al recuerdo de 1871 y que en su momento fue saludada por sus partidarios incluso como la Segunda Comuna de París. Además, la insurrección fue aplastada por Trotsky, y lo hizo en marzo de 1921, coincidiendo así con el 50 aniversario de la proclamación de la Comuna parisina. Eso favoreció que los paralelismos entre ambos episodios abundaran y que el nombre de Trotsky fuera colocado al lado del de Thiers, el famoso represor de los communards.

Todo ello evidenció que la memoria de la Comuna podía ser peligrosa para la nueva revolución, pues podía proporcionar un ejemplo alternativo de cómo llevarla a cabo. Si antes de 1917 el recuerdo de 1871 podía ser empleado como un referente desde el que inspirar y espolear el movimiento revolucionario, más adelante podía servir para hacerlo con los contrarios a la revolución, en especial en círculos como los anarquistas. Además, tras el triunfo de la Revolución Rusa también es lógico que esta prefiriera legitimarse en la propia historia de la revolución, con lo que la Comuna pasó, por así decir, a formar parte no tanto de su historia como de su prehistoria. Trotsky lo expresó con claridad en La literatura y la revolución, donde escribió que Octubre “ha entrado en la Historia del pueblo ruso como suceso decisivo, imprimiendo valor y sentido a todos sus elementos. El pasado palideció, se hundió y desapareció”. En otro momento afirmó que el 7 de noviembre de 1917 será la fecha del inicio de la nueva historia de la humanidad.

También es interesante observar cómo a lo largo de la revolución se quiso explicitar en numerosas ocasiones que la Revolución Rusa había aprendido la lección de los errores de su valioso, pero de todos modos imperfecto, precedente. Por ejemplo, el gobierno bolchevique elaboró el documento Cómo tomamos control del banco estatal, publicado el 6 de noviembre de 1918 en el diario Ekonomicheskaia Zhizn, donde se comenzaba señalando que “se le reprocha generalmente a la Comuna no haber tomado posesión del Banco Nacional de Francia. El gobierno soviético no repitió este error”. Lo que con este tipo de gestos se hacía era recuperar las críticas de Marx y Lenin al episodio de 1871 y legitimar desde ahí la actuación de la propia revolución.

Así pues, el nuevo referente de la memoria revolucionaria pasó a ser la fecha de 1917, en especial a partir de la organización de la Tercera Internacional, y el recuerdo de la Comuna se desplazó a un lugar más secundario, si bien todavía fue reivindicado (de hecho, uno de los batallones de las Brigadas Internacionales llevaba el nombre de “Comuna de París” mientras que, desde el anarquismo, Federica Montseny recordó su memoria como “un símbolo de eternidad” en su conferencia La comuna de París i la revolució espanyola (1937)). Además, la interpretación de 1871 pasó a supeditarse en la memoria comunista a la de 1917 y, al ser vista más como un precedente o un precursor incompleto, perdió en buena medida su valor propio.  El influjo de esta lectura, a su vez una mezcla de los textos de Marx y Lenin, se notó a lo largo de los años. Incluso en pensadores como Karl Korsch, quien llegó a escribir que no sólo para las ideas e instituciones del pasado feudal y burgués, sino también para cuantos pensamientos y formas de organización ha ido procurándose la propia clase obrera en los anteriores y sucesivos periodos de su lucha de autoliberación histórica, tiene validez esa dialéctica revolucionaria en virtud de la cual «el bien de ayer se convierte en el mal de hoy», por decirlo con palabras de Goethe, o, como vino a decir más clara y terminantemente Karl Marx, todo estadio histórico de una forma evolutiva de las fuerzas productoras revolucionarias y de la acción revolucionaria, así como de la evolución de la consciencia, puede convertirse, en un determinado punto de su proceso evolutivo, en una rémora para el mismo.

Casi medio después de la Revolución Rusa, un político comunista francés como Roger Garaudy (en aquel entonces todavía ortodoxo) todavía exclamaba en 1961 que “la gran lección de la Comuna es que la clase obrera sólo puede vencer a sus enemigos bajo el liderazgo de un partido revolucionario”. Asimismo, entre los historiadores se cultivó una visión semejante, como sucedió con Jean Bruhat, autor junto a Jean Dautry y Émile Tersen del influyente libro La Commune de 1871 (1960). En parte podríamos situar aquí también la obra de teatro Los días de la Comuna (1949) de Bertolt Brecht.

Sin embargo, en esos mismos momentos ya se estaba incubando una nueva e influyente reinterpretación histórica de la Comuna, y justamente por parte de un filósofo marxista suspendido por el Partido Comunista Francés. Se trataba de Henri Lefebvre, autor de La proclamación de la Comuna (1965), texto posiblemente influido por el breve escrito Sur la commune (1962) de Guy Debord, Raoul Vaneigem y Attila Kotànyi. En su obra Lefebvre se propuso recuperar y reivindicar la experiencia todavía en gran medida desconocida e inexplorada de la Comuna y al respecto escribió que la insurrección del 18 de marzo y los grandes días de la Comuna que siguieron, suponen la apertura ilimitada hacia el porvenir y lo posible (…). Ya es tiempo pues de no considerar a la Comuna como el ejemplo típico de un primitivismo revolucionario del cual se superan los errores, sino como una inmensa experiencia negativa y positiva de la cual no se ha encontrado ni realizado todavía toda la verdad.

Lefebvre invirtió a su manera los gestos de Lenin y Trotsky. Si la Revolución Rusa había conducido a postergar la memoria de 1871 frente a la de 1917, él priorizó la primera respecto a la segunda. Por eso, en su reinterpretación los rasgos valorados como defectos por Trotsky y Lenin fueron recuperados como virtudes a reivindicar. En esta línea, ensalzó la Comuna a causa de características como su gran pluralidad, su gran espontaneidad, su carácter internacionalista y antiimperialista (plasmado con el derribo de la Columna Vendôme, símbolo del despotismo militarista), su carácter colectivo (sin grandes líderes como Lenin o Trotsky) o por no haber un partido que controlara la acción política. Más aún, dibujó la Comuna como una inmensa fiesta que condujo a una radical transformación en la forma de vivir, el punto que más le interesaba de cara al presente y que entroncaba con su proyecto de querer revolucionar la vida cotidiana. Lo más importante de esta revolución no era tanto la toma del poder como la toma y reapropiación de la vida.

Como he analizado en otro lugar, la influencia de su filosofía y de su reinterpretación de la Comuna fue notable entre los participantes de Mayo del 68, quienes en parte (y con menor fuerza) reemplazaron el referente de 1917 por el de 1871. De hecho, se cuenta que sus orgullosos estudiantes le dijeron orgullosamente a Lefebvre que en las calles de París volvía a tener su Comuna de París. Con ello se evidenciaba que el distanciamiento de los participantes de Mayo del 68 con el Partido Comunista Francés no solo se daba en el terreno del presente, sino también en el del pasado y el de la memoria. Un buen ejemplo lo ofreció Daniel Cohn-Bendit, quien junto a su hermano Gabriel escribió el libro El izquierdismo, remedio a la enfermedad senil del comunismo (1968), abierto desafío al recuerdo de Lenin (autor de La enfermedad infantil del izquierdismo en el comunismo) y donde no faltan las referencias a la memoria de la Comuna. Desde esta perspectiva, la apelación a 1871 comportaba la ruptura con la memoria comunista oficial y, por así decir, la nueva revolución debía desembarazarse de buena parte de lo aprendido en la Revolución Bolchevique.

Mientras tanto, la memoria de la Comuna también pervivió y se transformó a causa del desarrollo de nuevas perspectivas logradas gracias a la renovación de unas investigaciones históricas que no dejaban de dialogar con el presente. Un caso destacado fue el de Jacques Rougerie, quien ha escrito numerosas obras sobre la Comuna de París, ha ayudado a reivindicar su importancia histórica y ha desafiado la tradición marxista al retratar la Comuna de París más como una heredera de las revoluciones plebeyas de 1789, 1830 y 1848 que como una proletaria precursora de la de 1917. Otro caso a resaltar fue el de Édith Thomas, pionera en la historia de las mujeres que escribió Les pétroleuses (1963), en la cual analizaba el hasta entonces poco estudiado papel político de las mujeres en el contexto de la Comuna y se adentraba en el mito de “las incendiarias”. Sobre este campo se ha aprendido mucho desde entonces y gracias a ello se ha podido calibrar mejor el papel político ejercido por las mujeres, quienes, pese a no ser reconocidas como ciudadanas, tuvieron una amplia participación en los hechos de 1871 e incluso fueron quienes desencadenaron la insurrección al proteger el 18 de marzo los cañones que los soldados enviados desde Versalles querían requisar. Además, también se ha conocido más sobre la memoria de figuras individuales como Louise Michel, Elisabeth Dmitrieff o André Leo, cuyo libro La guerra social ha sido traducido en 2016 al castellano por la editorial Virus.

Desde entonces, la memoria de la Comuna se ha seguido cultivando, obviamente con desigual intensidad y desde diferentes perspectivas, en el campo de la literatura (incluyendo apariciones parciales como la que hace en El cementerio de Praga de Umberto Eco), de la historia (incluyendo las originales aportaciones de Kristin Ross sobre el tema en libros como El surgimiento del espacio social o Lujo comunal) o en el del cine. Un caso excepcional fue el de Peter Watkins, director del celebrado y original documental histórico La Comuna (2000), de casi seis horas de duración, que en verdad se presenta como si fuera una suerte de reportaje televisivo actual. Además, desde los años 90, y coincidiendo con el boom de la memoria, también ha habido un repunte en los memoriales dedicados a la Comuna. Con motivo del 150 aniversario que este año se conmemora se han publicado muchas nuevas obras (incluyendo una colectiva de casi 1.500 páginas como La Commune de Paris 1871: les acteurs, l’événement, les lieux) e incluso la alcaldía de París, en manos de la socialista Anne Hidalgo, ha promovido su memoria con la organización de medio centenar de actos. Sin duda, la Comuna ha sido uno de esos pasados que se niegan a pasar, un pasado vivo que pertinazmente se enfrenta a su olvido y que no para seguir interpelando al presente.

The Medellín Cartel will claim responsibility for the attack. 1992 – For the second time in a year, military forces try to overthrow president Carlos Andrés Pérez in Venezuela. 1997 – Twenty-five people are killed in the second Souhane massacre in Algeria. 1999 – The centre-left Labour Party takes control of the New Zealand government with leader Helen Clark becoming the first elected female Prime Minister in New Zealand's history. 2001 – A hydrogen atmosphere is discovered on the extrasolar planet Osiris by the Hubble Space Telescope, the first atmosphere detected on an extrasolar planet. 2004 – Pope John Paul II returns the relics of Saint John Chrysostom to the Eastern Orthodox Church. 2006 – The House of Commons of Canada approves a motion introduced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper recognizing the Québécois as a nation within Canada. 2008 – XL Airways Germany Flight 888T: An Airbus A320 performing a flight test crashes near the French commune of Canet-en-Roussillon, killing all seven people on board. 2009 – Nevsky Express bombing: A bomb explodes on the Nevsky Express train between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, derailing it and causing 28 deaths and 96 injuries. 2015 – An active shooter inside a Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado, shoots at least four police officers. One officer later dies. Two civilians are also killed, and six injured. The shooter later surrendered.
