On Set Production - Critique of Process

Undertaking the role of both director and director of photography on Mid-Mortem was a challenge I undertook with great anticipation. My engagement on both roles had to be consistent, and I aligned the process of each. In the pre-production, I initially outlined a base style of the film. I explored the ideas of utilising hand held and moving shots dependent on character focus, but my pre-established directorial style (which I still maintain) leans towards shooting locked off, and given the spaces we had to shoot, I chose to lock off conversations with from focal lengths, as to signify the development of the two characters relationships. In early stages, I would utilise distanced, wider lenses, to create a separation that was mirrored both by the blocking and the content of their relationship. As the film continued, and the characters grew closer, both physically and emotionally, I pushed in on them (at one point literally using a single dolly shot. The only time I would switch to handheld would be to capture the shock of CATH finding her own corpse in the opening of the film.

I sought a similar distinction in lighting, intending to cast ATTRIB in dark shadow, and utilsing the uplighting of a prop, to create an inhuman, imposing look as she’s introduced. This would shift to more golden hues and softer exposure of her face throughout the film as she develops a relationship with CATH, until we see the uncanny look of the blue uplighting return as CATH’s spirit dissipates and ATTRIB retakes her role as a digital grim reaper.

I certainly could’ve taken more care in my selection of equipment, as (due to a scheduling issue with the stores) I failed to hire an LED capable of accurately presenting the light of a television. I attempted to overcome this hurdle by utilising the RGB tool on my own Nanlite Pavotube, and paired this with an additional flicker added in the colour grade (which I also undertook). However, adequate preparation would’ve allowed for the more accurate TV flicker of the rotolight.

I also sought to utilise bounces and black flags to adequately shape the light, particularly in the opening scene, however I failed to take into account the magnitude of the darkness that nighttime brings, which although allowed for a deep shadow that I was content with, didn’t give adequate options in the grade, which similarly happened in Sc2 which didn’t have enough of a temperature distinction between the lights.

That being said, I was able to capture the golden glow that I sought to retain, and the incorporation of practical sodium vapour streetlights added a tremendous depth to Sc1, especially with the additional halation added in the grade.

Overall, I feel I was successfully able to set out an accurate and adequate shooting plan, and adapt and improvise on set, especially considering this stands as my first time DoP’ing a full short. However, I could’ve taken steps to ensure adequate equipment, and recognised the lack of separation in Sc2.

I also felt extremely comfortable working alongside my Key Grip and AC’s, who were essential in maintain accurate schedule. My communication of concepts and targets led to a successful capturing of my vision, both through a directorial and cinematographical lens.

Creative Exercise 1 - Grandma’s Hands

Loosely inspired by the Bill Wither’s song of the same name, ‘Grandma’s Hands’ is a photo series that displays a specific nostalgia, that of the homely nature of a grandmother’s house.

The safe feeling of a grandparents house is defined by the small intricacies that stick in the mind - a perpetually unfinished jigsaw puzzle on the dining room table; a seemingly magically refilling pot of tea; a single bottle of wine only brought out during the holiday season; a compulsion to double check the locks on the door on an hourly basis

My own grandmother took me in during my teenage years after my father lost ownership of his own home, and by extension, her apartment acted as the first consistent home I ever had, a truly stable, unchanging place.

In order to highlight this stability and homely nature, I shot most of the series on a 70mm, which also acted to give the photos a feeling of being seen through the eyes of a child, with the hands and objects included in the photo feeling gargantuan.

The apartment itself has wonderful cove-like natural lighting, which I accentuated with a Nanlight Pavotube II to create a harsh contrast that clarified the details of the aged skin on the hands, as well as placing focus upon the hands instead of the objects.

The project was a wonderful exploration of nostalgia that brought an attention to detail from both my memory and my shooting efforts, and it also acts well as my own mini homage to one of my favourite soul artists
