Polish cinema for beginners - PANIC ATTACK

Ladies and gentlemen, here comes the 12th Polish Cinema for Beginners. Trip will be our main theme - films shown under the slogan "On the Road" will take us on the trip by car, train or on foot. First we set off by plane: the April edition will open at April 4th by Paweł Maślona's ‘Panic Attack’. A Plane, and on its board a group of Poles returning from vacation. Everything can happen here. Others, being in the country, devote themselves to different journeys: kids are on a drug trip, a woman on a date with her ex, mother connected to a computer game. We look at the characters of seemingly unrelated episodes in crisis moments, which on one hand raises drama, on the other, is sprinkled with a large dose of black humor, which almost explodes from the screen. Thanks to this, a multi-layered story with strong, memorable characters, played by the finest Polish actors (Magdalena Popławska, Artur Żmijewski, Dorota Segda), is watched with flushed face. Paweł Maślona’;s directing debut became a sensation of 2017 and quickly gained the status of an iconic film. Trailer for ‘Panic Attack’ The screenings during the 12th season of PCFB will be accompanied by lectures and meetings with filmmakers, film scholars and experts, who paint the broader social and historical context of each title. The meetings will be led by Adam Kruk - film critic, journalist and film expert, the winner of the Grand Prix award named after Krzysztof Mętrak, member of FIPRESCI. The whole, as always, is held in English, so that all residents of Wrocław - regardless of where they come from - can learn about the roads and sideways of Polish cinema. The "Panic Attack" screening will take place on April 4 at 19:00 in the New Horizons Cinema. Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2018 Preview

On Friday, June 29th, the most prestigious celebration of cinema in Central and Eastern Europe kicks off in the Czech Republic, and this year, RogerEbert.com will be there to cover it. The 53rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) runs through Saturday, July 7th, and has many special events planned in addition to its remarkable lineup of around 200 movies, several of which are making their world premiere. 

Among the most enticing titles are Peter Brunner’s Austro-American drama, “To the Night,” starring Caleb Landry Jones, an actor who made an indelible impression last year in four consecutive masterworks, perhaps most notably in “Get Out.” Paweł Maślona, the co-writer of Marcin Wrona’s arrestingly eerie “Demon,” will present his directorial debut, a dark comedy entitled, “Panic Attack.” Karelle Tremblay, a Best Actress winner at the Canadian Screen Awards, headlines Sébastien Pilote’s coming-of-age film, “The Fireflies Are Gone,” while Anna Paquin will be in attendance for the premiere of the family drama, “The Parting Glass,” directed by her husband and “True Blood” co-star, Stephen Moyer (who will join her on the red carpet). And Slavic director Olmo Omerzu, whose 2015 feature, “Family Film,” was among my favorites of recent years, will be screening his latest work, “Winter Flies,” re-teaming him with actress Eliska Krenková, a major talent on the rise.

Seven of the ten films in this year’s East of the West competition are helmed by women, including Darya Zhuk, the Belarusian director of the highly anticipated “Crystal Swan,” and student Academy Award winner Klara Kochańska, making her feature debut with the road movie “Via Carpatia.” Though there are many intriguing titles set to screen in the documentary section, none promise to be quite as incendiary as “Putin’s Witnesses,” a film tracing the events that led to Vladimir Putin’s ascension to the Russian presidency on the final day of 1999. The picture is directed by Vitaly Mansky, a Ukrainian-born filmmaker who earned acclaim for his 2015 feature, “Under the Sun,” an eye-opening portrait of North Korea blending scripted propaganda with un-staged truth. 

Microbudget trailblazer Andrew Bujalski will be honored with the European premiere of “Support the Girls,” a perceptive comedy about the service industry, and Thomasin McKenzie will be on hand for a screening of Debra Granik’s “Leave No Trace,” a film that already ranks among the very best I’ve seen in 2018. McKenzie’s astonishing, understated performance is guaranteed to earn well-deserved raves from festivalgoers. Another special guest screening his latest work in Karlovy Vary is Terry Gilliam, the celebrated auteur whose polarizing, long-awaited epic, “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” will open in the Czech Republic a day after its KVIFF premiere, though it has yet to secure a U.S. distributor. 

An entire section of this year’s festival will be dedicated to the extraordinary legacy of the Austin Film Society, the non-profit film organization founded in 1985 by Richard Linklater that has gone on to foster major talents in American independent filmmaking. Among the film society’s selections set to screen are Linklater’s “Slacker,” Bujalski’s “Computer Chess” and Jeff Nichols’ “Take Shelter.” Two Oscar-winners will receive the festival’s coveted Crystal Globe for Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema: “Rain Man” director Barry Levinson and “The Shawshank Redemption” star Tim Robbins. A special concert performance by Tim Robbins and The Rogues Gallery Band is also in the works.

Takiego filmu wcześniej nie widzieliśmy

„Demon” nie tylko pozostanie zapamiętany jako ostatnie dzieło Marcina Wrony, ale po prostu jako dobre kino z dobrze napisanym scenariuszem trzymającym tempo. Reżyser pracował nad nim z Pawłem Maśloną – wielokrotnie nagradzanym za etiudę „Magma”. Scenarzysta opowiedział o wspólnej pracy oraz o planach na własny debiut

Kasia Siewko: Gratuluję świetnego debiutu scenariuszowego. Jak przebiegały prace nad scenariuszem? Kiedy w głowie Twojej lub Marcina Wrony po raz pierwszy pojawił się pomysł na tego typu historię? 

Paweł Maślona: Marcin chciał zaadaptować sztukę Piotra Rowickiego „Przylgnięcie”. Kiedy ja się pojawiłem w tym projekcie, miał już za sobą dwie wersje scenariusza, z których nie był zadowolony. Najpierw poprosił mnie o to, żebym z nim przegadał scenariusz. Okazało się, że mamy podobne refleksje i dobrze nam się rozmawia. Rozmawialiśmy więc dalej. A im więcej rozmawialiśmy, tym bardziej mieliśmy poczucie, że mamy ochotę pójść w podobną stronę. Kiedy omówiliśmy cały film – od pierwszej do ostatniej sceny – zaczęliśmy pisać. A później poprawiać. I poprawiać... 

Film powstał na motywach dramatu „Przylgnięcie” Piotra Rowickiego, ale to nie była jedyna inspiracja. 

Do każdego projektu wchodzi się z bagażem inspiracji, często nie zawsze uświadomionych. Zdarza się, że coś jest nam na tyle bliskie, że traktujemy to jako element naszego własnego doświadczenia i wkładamy to później do filmu. Naturalną inspiracją i punktem odniesienia było „Wesele” Wyspiańskiego czy fragmenty literatury romantycznej. Włożyliśmy do filmu także cytat z „Lśnienia” Kubricka, bo wydał nam się trafiony w punkt. Swoją drogą, uważam, że ten cytat bardziej pasuje do naszego filmu niż do filmu Kubricka. Wiem, że Marcin dokładnie zgłębiał zjawisko „dybuka” i świat duchowości żydowskiej. Pewnie wiele inspiracji pojawiło się na etapie przygotowań do zdjęć, ale o tym nie mogę zbyt wiele powiedzieć. 

W moim odczuciu film jest swego rodzaju hybrydą. Owszem – straszy, ale siłą filmu jest również humor. Skąd pomysł na połączenie dwóch skrajnych gatunków? 

Połączenie filmu grozy z komedią wydawało nam się najbardziej odpowiednie. Uczciwe. To nie jest tak, że od początku mieliśmy pomysł, żeby zrobić komedio-horror. Po prostu sytuacja wyjściowa – opętanie pana młodego na polskim weselu – sama narzuciła tę perspektywę. Wystarczyło, że wymyślaliśmy kolejne sceny, zastanawiając się „i co dalej?” a komedia przychodziła sama. Trzeba było jej tylko na to pozwolić. W pewnym momencie widzieliśmy, że piszemy coś zupełnie innego, dziwnego, coś, z czym wcześniej się nie zetknęliśmy, przynajmniej nie w taki sposób. I to podniecało nas jeszcze bardziej. Bo nie ma nic lepszego, niż robić coś, czego się jeszcze nie widziało, a my takiego filmu wcześniej nie widzieliśmy. 

Czy jako scenarzysta, ale też reżyser odnajdujesz się w stylistyce kina grozy? 

Trudno powiedzieć. Nasz film nie jest czysty gatunkowo, a kino grozy nigdy nie było moim ulubionym gatunkiem. Myślę, że to w największym stopniu zależy od historii. I od tego, z kim się pracuje. Pod tym względem miałem łatwo, bo z Marcinem pracowało się bardzo dobrze, a historia była fascynująca. W takim układzie można się odnaleźć chyba w każdym gatunku. Domyślam się, że nieustająco myślisz nad swoim debiutem reżyserskim. Możesz zdradzić co planujesz? Przygotowuję się teraz do mojego pełnometrażowego debiutu pod roboczym tytułem „BIG BANG”. To będzie wielowątkowa tragikomedia o ludziach, którzy przechodzą najgorszy dzień w swoim życiu. A w największym stopniu to będzie film o samotności każdego człowieka wobec śmierci i wobec Wszechświata. Jakoś tak.
