Structural and Institutional Oppression of Creatives
The creative industries—encompassing fields such as music, film, literature, visual arts and fashion—are often perceived as progressive and inclusive spaces. However, beneath the veneer of creativity and innovation lies a deeply entrenched system of structural and institutional oppression. Equal Payment and sozio-economic Inequity One of the most glaring forms of structural oppression within…

In the Layoff Season, Sundar Pichai, Alphabet CEO’s Pay Touches $226 Million Due to a Huge Stock Award
Tumblr media
In 2022, Sundar Pichai, the Chief Executive Officer of Alphabet Inc. drew a handsome compensation of $226 million because of a triennial stock award that had a valuation of $218 million. When compared, this huge sum of money meant several bigwigs in Silicon Valley drew only a little. The stock award happens every three years. And in 2019 as well Pichai received a similar size package of $281 million.
Last year, his compensation was $6.3 million wherein in there was no stock award as per the filing by the Google parent company Friday. So, for the last 3 years, his package was stable at $2 million. In the technology industry, the compensation that CEOs get has become a sensitive topic. This was especially felt after a tide of layoffs at major companies, including Alphabet.
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc. cut out his 2023 pay after criticism for making $100 million each of the last 2 years. In 2022, the package that Pichai drew placed him over several other executives and officials at Alphabet. The Chief Business Officer, Philipp Schindler, and the Senior Vice President of Google’s knowledge and information. And they both had a package of about $37 million.
The compensation for Ruth Porat, the Chief Financial Officer was $24.5 million. For them, the stock grants are distributed on a yearly basis. Alphabet started to lay off employees in January. They had reduced 6% of their workforce by cutting down 12,000 jobs. And this was followed up by setting new priorities, reducing spending, and other measures to keep the costs low.

To reach the Stars: The Long Odyssey of Women in STEM
[This post is a requirement for my class. All views and opinions expressed are my own — Inspired by our Week 6 topic: Human Beings and the Other: Political Ontology of Race, Gender and Class]
Thought Piece #2
It is no mystery that men tend to dominate STEM Careers. Before we discuss how women in STEM are snubbed, what is the meaning of STEM? STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics is the study of the mentioned courses, and about 13 million students study courses relating to it.
But why is there called a STEM gap? Throughout a young girl’s education, they are not given more opportunities to study STEM-related subjects. Mostly because society tends to focus more on men. According to the American Association of University Women, or AAUW, women account for only 28% of the workforce. Because of this, young girls who dream of becoming a scientist or a mathematician across the world are discouraged from continuing their dreams.
Tumblr media
The real question is, why is there called a STEM gap?
First, slim to none female role models in their chosen field. As young girls explore their interests for the future, they would want to look up to someone who shares the same interests as them. But because women are often shied away from STEM careers, young girls are having a hard time finding a role model.
The second is sexism. According to Western Governors University or WGU, female students receive sexist remarks from almost everyone — from their classmates to professors. Because of this, female students who experience sexism in male-dominated STEM fields leave early in their careers.
Lastly, society makes a big impact on a young girl’s future. According to Built By Me, people across the world see STEM jobs as “jobs for men.” The society also thinks that women are “less intelligent” than men, making it hard for women to get accepted to STEM jobs. As our society continues to push women away from STEM, young girls and women across the world lose motivation.
To sum up everything, we, as a society, need to change our views and opinions on “who can work” and “who cannot work.” People need to understand that women are equal, if not, far more capable of doing work in STEM-related jobs. We must break the stigma that women should not be scientists, doctors, or mathematicians. What we should do is inspire and motivate young girls across the world so that they can be who they want to be. They can be the next Marie Curie, the next Katherine Johnson, the next Mae C. Jemison — but most importantly, they can be themselves.
“Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It’s your place in the world; it’s your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live.”  – Mae Jemison, first African American woman astronaut in space

How can we close the gender pay gap?
Tumblr media
The gender pay gap and gender equity in the workplace have been the pain point of the corporate world for a very long time.
Since the second half of the 20th century, women’s participation has grown significantly across different industry domains. Women are working longer hours and pursuing higher education in great numbers. However, despite this progress, women are paid less than men. And that is where the gender pay gap comes into the picture.
So, what exactly is the gender pay gap? What drives it? And how can the organizations address it? This blog post provides an answer to all such questions and more.
The gender pay gap is wider than you thought. In simple terms, it refers to the difference in earnings between men and women. It can be calculated in many ways, and it is found that women constantly earn less than men.
If you look at the stats, it is found that women of all races earned, on average, just 82 cents against $1 earned by men of all races. Similarly, female employees working in the retail trade managed to earn $632 per week on average, while male employees earned $747 per week in the U.S.
The above stats indicate that women's earnings are less in nearly 300+ occupations than men's. There are only a few occupations where women earn slightly more than their male counterparts, which shows the gender wage gap by industry. Women make less money than men in different industries in the U.S. According to the research from how much, median male earnings were approximately $45,893 compared to women, who made approximately $32,436. This shows that women earn hardly 70% of what men earn. Take a look at the visual below.
Women do not make less money simply because they work in a different domain or career stream than men or choose to become a mother. There are various factors for the biases in wages and compensation for women, such as:
Differences in industries or occupation. Occupational segregation plays a vital role in gender discrimination as well as wages and compensation. Women and men still tend to focus on different jobs and fields. Usually, jobs associated with men pay better than female-oriented jobs. Such jobs do not pay less because it requires fewer skills, but they pay less because women do it. Moreover, women's work is always undervalued.
The penalty of being a mother. Many working mothers felt biased in wages and compensation because of gendered norms and expectations set for them. Mothers who work full-time are paid less than fathers – even if they never leave their workforce. Moreover, lack of paid family, medical, and sick leave add more problems for women to work.
Years of experience. Since women are responsible for caregiving and other unpaid obligations, they have less work experience than men. As discussed above, paid family and medical leaves can help women return to work more easily.
Gender discrimination. Direct or indirect discrimination and bias have been the major pain points for women regarding wages and compensation. Many employers often make decisions for women less than men based on their prior salary. Women from one job follow this kind of discrimination to another.
Lack of pay transparency. Some workplace practices fail to be transparent with salary information. While federal government workers pay a 13% pay gap between males and females, that number increases up to 29% in the private sector. Original Source Posted By Addweb Solution

I'm really astounded how the answer to men denigrating "women's interests" isn't to unpack why interests are gendered anyway and to push back against those stereotypes and how harmful they can be (i.e they underpin unequal labour practices, paygaps, devaluation of domestic work etc) INSTEAD what y'all dizzy bitches do is invert this form of misogyny and say how "men's interests" are stupid and "women's interests" are superior. we're not making it out the patriarchy alive long as idiots whose only issue with it is that they're not the oppressors are driving these conversations. Y'all may say it's "just a joke" to claim that drinking beer is a sign of misogyny in women but like, you are very much buying into the idea that certain lifestyle and aesthetic preferences confer value to you as a person
