pirates bane: viviana westerguard

viviana westerguard doesn’t remember much, and what she does remember changes by the day. it took her nearly a week to remember the shape and sound of her name—and she’s still not sure she remembered all of it. despite this, there are some things that have stuck with her. even on days where she knew of nothing else, her magic came to her as easy as breathing. which is probably for the best, as viviana is a very powerful spellcaster—and if her power were to be unleashed, with nothing to hold it back, the amount of destruction she could wreak would be catastrophic.

viviana uses her magic the same way most people use their limbs. it is a part of her, and she treats it as such. as such she can often be seen levitating things to her, rearranging things with magic, using it to pull out chairs or push them in, etc.. in addition to spellcraft, viviana is very skilled with alchemy and finds nothing more comforting than sitting beside a cauldron, watching her latest creation bubble and boil. despite this, you should never trust her to cook something, as her tastes tend to be… strange.

viviana was born with no pupils nor irises. yet, despite this, she is not blind. she does not see as most people do, it’s true, but her sight often brings more clarity than a traditional gaze. she is tall, about the same height as lyr, with long hair she keeps in microbraids. she has two long horns that sweep back from her head, and her nails look more like claws than fingernails.

she tends to dress in open skirts and leggings, with corsets and bell sleeves. she’s rarely ever without her staff, which she often uses as a walking stick. this makes people think she’s more helpless than she is. she’s rarely ever without a pouch of animal bones; rune-dice; and a deck of seer’s cards. and she is almost always wearing her witch’s hat—a large, pointy thing decorated with skulls, flowers, herbs, twigs, and other such things. the hat is, in fact, a portal, and is where she carries most of her things.

i,,, love viviana so much. she is probably the most self-indulgent aspect of metanoia, i’m not gonna lie. she’s one of the original characters, alongside ava (who was originally the protagonist!), and i just,,, love her so much. she’s so eccentric & fun & i’m really excited to bring her into the main story!!

fifteen years ago, ava lost her mother. lys’tria and her brother, kyr’ael, were the first slaeyr. they were the ones who decided what being a slaeyr meant. they led their people together—lys on domestic, day-to-day matters, and kyr on military and combat matters. they were influential, proud people, and ava admired her mother more than anyone else in the world.

and then, kyr’ael changed his name to kai’os, and he betrayed the slayer. no, he betrayed the entire world. he sought godhood. when lys stood against him, he killed her. their people either stood with him, or against him, and all who stood against him fell to his blade. their power was added to his own and he used that to take mynera. ava and her twin brother, lyr, escaped the carnage thanks to their mother. for the next ten years, they spent every day looking for a way that they could take their uncle down. eventually, they found it. they joined forces with several others, and found weaver’s bane—a sword that could kill anything. it brought kai’os’s rule to an end.

but it also brought something else. something that the slaeyr had never had before—a home. it was, barring her mother’s miraculous resurrection, everything ava had ever wanted. for the last five years, she and her brother have worked alongside other trustworthy slaeyr to cultivate it into a proper home. they have built cities, roads, and laws. they have welcomed guild chapters. built a government. the work is rewarding, though often stressful—or boring. but when an old friend, asa veranus, shows up, worried for another one of their old friends, ava names a stand-in, and puts it all aside in favor of helping him.

ava is an empathetic woman with a deep connection with the earth, its people, and the animals. people and animals trust her very easily, and plants grow healthier and faster in her presence. (as evidenced by the flowers she grows in her hair; and around her wrists and ankles.) she’s short, and the last five years of settled living have put some weight on her. she keeps her hair waist-length and often loose, though while traveling she does braid it. she hardly ever wears shoes. she is kind and caring, often one of the first to reach out when someone is hurting. despite this, however, ava is often more rational than the others—capable of putting her emotions aside to look at the facts, and make the tough decisions.

my baby!!! i love ava sm <3 she’s such a good girl, guys, i would die for her. i want her and asa to be best friends :p

"my name is elaena, death’s eldest daughter and the first reaper," is her favored introduction. it’s something she takes pride in—being the oldest, being a daughter, being a reaper. elaena is different from her siblings. almost… human, in a way that they are not. while she’s fond of them, she doesn’t claim to be close to any of them. there’s a disconnect that she can’t quite seem to reconcile.

to her father, though, elaena is very close. she is his main confidante and one of his most trusted. that was how she was assigned to alinora. to convince her to become death’s champion; to train her; and to watch her back. it’s a responsibility she takes seriously—and not just because she’s grown to like alinora.

elaena has a wicked sense of humor that tends towards morbidity. she delights in scaring people and making the jump or shiver, and will sometimes emphasize her non human qualities. still, she’s also quite fond of mortals, and grows attached very easily. one reason she’s avoided visiting eldora in person for so long.  despite her fondness, however, elaena doesn’t have much patience and can often be quite ruthless in the pursuit of what she thinks is right. 

elaena has long, straight white hair and too-pale skin. her eyes are gold, with slit pupils. her ears are slightly pointed, and she has small fangs. most of the time her fingers look normal, but sometimes she’ll have claws. she can shift into a bird—a raven, specifically—and does so often. she can usually be found in her reaper’s robes, but when traveling with the others she usually wears necromancer robes or armor.

i think out of the eight moodboards i’ve made (though this will only be the seventh posted!) elaena’s is my favorite. it’s just,,, so pretty. i love her so much, though much like viviana there is a lot i can’t tell you about her :/ still though!! i’m excited to get to the point where i can reveal some secrets about her ;)

lyr grew up a wanderer. he and his twin sister, ava, lived a nomadic lifestyle—as did every other slaeyr. he spent his winters in the city of illuminara, where he became close friends with the archmagus-to-be, talitha jade. the two of them were inseperable when together, and kept in contact even when apart by way of magical journals. however, these journals were lost when kai’os betrayed the slaeyr and killed lyr’s mother. he spent ten years searching for a way to avenge her death and stop his uncle from ending the world. and when he finally found a way, he ended up on talitha’s ship.

together, they—alongside others—ended kai’os’s reign of terror and restored peace to mynera and among the slaeyr. since then, lyr has been working with his sister, cousin, and several advisors to build a kingdom. it’s often boring work, and he doesn’t find the same enjoyment in it that his sister does. most days, he finds himself restless and longing for adventure. his reprieve is often his letters to talitha—which, while sporadic, provide humor and wit enough to sustain him through the darkest times. both of them are too busy to correspond too often, so he at first doesn’t notice when she stops responding so often. when it does finally reach his notice, he isn’t overly panicked.

however, when asa came to say that aishlynn was missing, and lyr wrote talitha, he found her so unlike her usual self. though he didn’t say it aloud, it terrified him. alongside ava, talitha is one of the people he’s closest to. losing her… would be a severe blow. he is determined to find out what happened to her—and how to reverse it.

lyr values family over everything else—family being whatever he makes of it, of course. his bonds with them are what keep him going through the darkest of times, and his fear of losing them can often keep him up at night. as such, he often tends to play the defender in battle more than he charges ahead—though he does have a reckless streak in him, which talitha often brings up. lyr enjoys playing pranks on those close to him and causing other mischief. he also enjoys working with his hands, and can often be found carving wooden statuettes or fixing something. lyr’s emotions run high, much like his sister… but unlike his sister, they’re not often tempered with rational thought.

pirates bane: asa veranus

asa grew up in a small farming village bordering mynera. he exhibited his healing talent at a young age, after bringing back a blackbird from the brink of death. ever since, he’s worn black feathers in that bird’s honor, for showing him what he was capable of. he studied with some of eldora’s most talented healers and was praised as a prodigy. he eventually returned to his village and set up shop there, though he had plans of one day becoming a traveling physician—perhaps once he had reached his first century.

however, his plans were ruined when kai’os attacked. knowing that healers were rare and that if kai’os heard of his existence, he would be forced into the slaeyrs service, his mother begged him to hide. asa relented, traveling up the mountains to an old cabin. there, he disguised himself as a hermit and would have remained for the rest of kai’os’s reign if not for aishlynn mynerva. asa has always had a sixth sense for people being in danger—and when he woke up with a terrible feeling in his gut, he followed it to aishlynn. he brought her back from the brink of death, just as he had done to the bird so many years prior. at her request, he joined mynera’s resistance.

once kai’os was dethroned, asa assisted mynera in the rebuilding efforts before returning home for a time. however, he was not content to remain idle, and followed his dream of traveling. his talents soon became renowned across the northern part of eldora, earning him the title of grand healer—one he demurs from. people say he can bring back the dead, though this is untrue.

asa generally can be found wearing robes or skirts, as he despises the feeling of pants. (he’ll consent to leggings when it’s cold, though.) he is never without either his feathered pauldrons or feathered cloak, nor his healer’s satchel. he almost always smells of aloe and mint. he’s very tall and lanky, and his limbs often seem too long for his body—as if he was perpetually a gangly teenager. to him, gender is something other people have. he is content with identifying as a man most days, though some days he feels more like neither. every now and again he feels more feminine, and some days he feels like both. he is known for his excellent bedside manner and attention to detail… and the way his voice goes high pitched when he’s yelling at someone for not following his instructions.

asa is,,, the most precious string bean and i love him to death. he made a cameo towards the end of the martyr queen, much like viviana made one towards the beginning, but i’m excited to write him as a main character!! i am,,, a little disappointed that i won’t be able to have him interacting with aishlynn yet but. still excited to have him chill with ava :D

talitha is a magical prodigy, a pirate captain, and an accomplished swordswoman. she grew up in the city-state of illuminara, home of the magus college. at eight years old, she mastered the invisibility spell—one of the most complicated illusion spells out there. at twelve, she was accepted into the college. she graduated at sixteen, and at nineteen, she left illuminara behind. her father, the city’s viscount, was conspiring with sorcerers—practitioners of forbidden magic—and intended to have them marry his two daughters so that they could control illuminara and the college. however, talitha figured this out and fled, taking her sister with her.

the two of them ended up on a pirate ship, where talitha found in herself a deep love for the sea. she helped the crew stage a mutiny against the cruel captain who ruled the ship, and took his place. unfortunately, her sister was less enamored with the ocean than talitha was, and was turned from it completely after one of the old captain’s enemies attacked the ship and stranded them on a desert island. talitha used magic to grow a new ship, a living ship, from the seed of a tree, and shortly after they returned to port, lynette decided to pursue a new life. she settled down with a former thief and had a child with him… while talitha continued gallivanting about, plundering anarian ruins and making both friends and enemies.

talitha’s travels eventually led her to join the myneran resistance. she started off just running supplies for them, but it soon escalated to her engaging enemy ships in battle and dropping soldiers off where needed. she did have to leave the resistance for a time when her nephew fell ill—her full attention was devoted to finding a cure for him. unfortunately, she and her family’s search led her sister and brother-in-law straight into her father’s hands. he had them, and talitha’s nephew, killed. talitha sought revenge on him, and got it. she gave up her birthright and returned to the resistance, where she was recruited for a special mission by one of the resistance’s commanders—aishlynn mynerva. by her side, talitha was reunited with some old friends in the search of a unique sword—which they retrieved, and used to kill kai’os. talitha kept the sword after, hoping to use it against kaltain. unfortunately, the sword is inhabited by a shadowken prince, one of the most powerful beings in the forgotten realms, and its influence poisons her mind. talitha is now a slave to its whims—and has succumbed to the fate she fled her home to avoid…

talitha jade is a human woman, tanned from her time at sea. her hair is blond and kept short. she rarely ever lets it get very long. it can be messy, as she tends to cut it herself. she has two main styles—the first being her ‘work’ outfit, which is little more than a band around her chest and some loose trousers. the second is more fancy, made to resemble a naval officers uniform. in either case, she is hardly ever without her hat—a tricorn piece decorated with feathers, flowers, a parrot skull, sea shells, and other miscellaneous things. talitha is partially deaf. she uses magic to restore her hearing when she can, but has also developed a sign language with her crew.

i did not get to talk about her personality as much as i was hoping, but that was a lot of information to try and pack into four paragraphs!! still, i’m very pleased about it :D my obnoxious pirate-gal deserves only the best, after all :p

aishlynn mynerva was born to mynera’s queen, elinor mynerva and her husband, the prince-consort, knight-commander aishwyn berethni nee mynerva. her birth was celebrated and she was afforded every luxury as befitting a daughter of the queen, and of a celebrated hero. growing up, aishlynn was always exceedingly close to her father, though she admired her mother greatly. as such, it devastated her when he disappeared at sea.

a rift grew between herself and her mother, which widened all the more when elinor gave birth to aishlynn’s little sister, alinora mynerva. it felt, to her, the deepest betrayal--and she could not help but resent both her mother and her sister for it. when alinora was four, aishlynn was claimed as a slaeyr. she, herself, was sixteen at the time. she left mynera and wrote to her mother only sparingly.

but when mynera fell, aishlynn returned home to aid the resistance and to stand against kai’os. she reunited with her sister in the process, and remained at her side until kai’os fell to the enchanted blade they procured together. shortly after, however, aishlynn left with the pirate captain talitha jade in pursuit of kai’os’s eldest daughter, whom both believed to be a greater threat than her father could have ever imagined.

however, five years later, it is apparent that aishlynn is missing. where could she have gone? what became of her? only talitha holds the answers, but talitha is not quite herself at the moment...

aishlynn’s doesn’t have the appearance paragraph like the others do but only because i couldn’t figure out how to work it in while still keeping a similar tone to the others.

alinora was born to elinor myerva, queen of mynera, and her spymaster, oreyn—once known as the crimson blade, a prolific assassin who worked with the black swans. alinora didn’t discover her father’s identity until she was fifteen, after she went snooping. she had always had her suspicions, but that confirmed them. that was also when she discovered his identity as the crimson blade. when she confronted him about the second part, he told her a little bit about his past—and told her that if she was ever in trouble, she could seek out his old contacts in verdani. at sixteen, alinora found out she was betrothed to one of her best friends—liera ilwyn, whom she had also been seeing in secret for the past several months. the two were ecstatic. at seventeen the two had planned to take a two week trip into the mountains. it was all they talked about for several months, and when they finally did go, it was two weeks of uninterrupted bliss.

…until they returned. they found mynera conquered, strange soldiers walking through the streets; new banners hung from the walls. alinora was horrified—but when she turned to liera, hoping for comfort, she instead found a beast stepping from liera’s skin. she had never made it to the trip at all; her identity was stolen by a shapeshifter. alinora tricked the beast into its demise at the hands of a forest beast, and then fled mynera. she followed her father’s advice from ages ago, and made for verdani. from there, she joined the assassins under a false name—jezebel eramyn. she spent ten years there, waiting for the day she could stand against the one who took her home from her.

unfortunately, her past caught up with her. the grandmaster of the assassins was killed after he denied them information about her. that night, alinora was visited by a reaper as she prepared to flee. she was told by elaena that she was never meant to exist… and that because of that, she was the only person who could stand against fate. alinora agreed to join her in the fight against kai’os, but she wasn’t sure she wanted to fight a goddess directly. but when [redacted] occurred during the final battle, she knew she had to. since then, she’s spent the last five years learning what it means to be death’s champion and mastering her new powers.

alinora is one of the elenai, the second most long-lived race on eldora. she has large, sharply pointed ears. they’re very sensitive, and can she pick up even the softest or most distant of sounds. (higher pitched noises can get to her, as well.) she’s quite tall, though about average height for an elenai, standing at 5’10. she has olive skin and black hair, with golden green eyes. the gold in her eyes is more pronounced since she became death’s champion, and her pupils are now slits. (or blown, if it’s dark.) her fingers are tipped with black, and she’s hardly ever cold anymore…

my baby!! the protagonist of the series, the often grumpy alinora! her backstory took forever,,, i kept making it too short or too long! & her moodboard! oh, that was frustrating too! i wanted it to be more red than it turned out, but i ended up liking this one better :)
