For centuries, women have been pinned against nonuniversal body types. Societal norms have reinforced these ideas through media. Whether it be in advertisements, radio, music videos or social media pages. In recent events, there has been an increase in pressure for physical activity. Although, this post is not to discredit those who use these environments, such as gyms, to better themselves. Rather this blog critiques the ways in which influencers, social media, and athleisure wear corporations shape body image today.

 In the early 2000’s slim bodies were heavily praised. Low rise jeans and tiny tops were an opportunity to highlight a women’s body figure. Diet culture, then, were on a rise. Women wanted to know how to lose fat and achieve a flat stomach. “Thinspiration” was a Pinterest trend that encouraged unhealthy eating habits and exercise routines to achieve a thin look. Thus, the idea of body curves was out of question.

Now, what people are calling the BBL epidemic, highlights a new body type. Although some might consider the present times as a more inclusive society, there are still harsh expectations being placed on women. Small waists and bigger bottoms have been a chased look. There is an increase in workout programs that have promising outcomes. Yet the difference in a nutritionist or physical trainer and an influencer, is the trust with clients. In fact, the amount of following a person has creates a new sense of trust. Folk culture has allowed influencers the opportunity to create content that attracts a newfound community. For example, fitness influencers such as Daisy Keech have created workout programs with 353K followers. With no proof of credentials, influencers have complicated the fitness industry. Think about it, working out is becoming less about being healthy and more about the fashion within it. There are several fitness brands collaborating with these Instagram influencers; gymshark, bo+tee and fabletics (amongst many). The community that is created, relies solely on following in the footsteps of these idols. Bigger corporations understand this relationship and create campaigns that will attract an audience. Overtime, this expectation of perfection is the goal. For instance, looking like the influencer as a whole. When this unrealistic ideal is not obtained, it creates bigger issues. It’s a never ending cycle of money, profiting off of body dissatisfaction.

Furthermore demonstrating the harsh reality of beauty standards in the past, present and future.
