Minor-Studio-Project-Mondays : Our 1st Task

Week one and specifically the first day flew by real fast and I gave a quick run down of what happened on the first day already on a previous post. This is specifically about the first task our tutor Maisie gave us.

It was to make a Pecha Kucha Presentation about ourselves so that we could introduce ourselves one by one on the next Monday of the 2nd week.

A Pecha Kucha Presentation has some guidelines, like 20 slides with only images on them, no text, 20 seconds spent per slide talking free-style. Now I like talking free-style since i tend to ramble on and get into many details naturally talking a lot and being prone to run-on-sentences (have you noticed yet?! Haha). The only problem I ran into was what to fill the 20 slides with.

Tarea - Sesión 6. Comunicación eficaz y eficiente

Para hacer una buena presentación -que no es más que comunicar de manera efectiva-, hay que tener en cuenta dos miradas, la propia y la ajena. La primera tiene que ver con aquello que nos interesa: eso que nos moviliza se traduce en un objetivo y, a partir de tenerlo claro, se trazan caminos para conseguirlo. La segunda responde al público: en dónde y cómo te van a escuchar (contexto y canal), quiénes son, qué les interesa. Prestar atención a la audiencia es vital para diseñar el mensaje y, sobre todo, la forma en la que se emitirá (código). En síntesis, antes de empezar a trabajar en la presentación tenemos que respondernos dos preguntas: qué quiero conseguir al dar el mensaje, y cuál es la mejor forma de transmitirlo para que me escuchen con atención.

Lo anterior se aplica para muchos contextos, a pesar de que parezcan complicados como es el caso de la exposición de clase en formato Pecha Kucha.

Tal como lo indica la página web Pechakucha.com, el término significa "charla casual" ("chit chat", por su traducción en inglés), y solo con eso la tarea se vuelve compleja. ¿Cómo lograr compartir nuestras ideas en 400 segundos, 20 diapositivas y sonar como un amigo (comunicación que se presenta como informal, la naturalidad como estrategia)?

Se trata, sin embargo, de una tarea que puedo resolver sin pasar tantos apuros. Basta con analizar mis fortalezas y debilidades, y determinar cómo potenciarlas y mejorar mis puntos flacos:

Fortalezas

Confianza. Es mi capacidad de creer que sé del tema, que puedo aportar nuevos puntos de vista que sean interesantes y que quiero compartir la información con mis compañeros. Para potenciarla, voy a repasar mis fuentes de información, de forma que pueda notar detalles que antes pasaron desapercibidos y aprovecharlos para construir mejor mis ideas: no solo se trata de la forma, sino también del contenido.

Capacidad de síntesis. Jamás me gustó el chamullo: no hay peor enemigo de la información que los adornos innecesarios. Por ejemplo, podría escribir este ensayo con una serie de párrafos, pero es mucho mejor -tanto para organizar ideas como para los ojos del lector- que desagregue las ideas tal como lo hago ahora. Justamente eso es parte importante de mi exposición. La mejor manera de potenciarla es separar la carne del hueso: tengo que quedarme solo con la información más sabrosa, con la proteína para las mentes de mi audiencia.

Contador de historias. Todo lo anterior se combina y se potencia por mi interés por contar historias. Por mi formación, no me interesa solo el qué sino también el cómo. Importa muchísimo cómo se comparte la información, y una historia con la que la audiencia se pueda identificar siempre juega a favor. Todavía no he decidido cómo será la trama, pero el objetivo es que la audiencia se pueda relacionar con ella.

Debilidades

Mala memoria. Mientras más información trato de recordar, menos logro retener. Es paradójico, pero hay una cura: interiorizar el relato. Partir de un guion, pero apuntar a que los textos fluyan con la naturalidad que requiere un Pecha Kucha. 

Nerviosismo. A todos nos pasa: minutos antes de la exposición sentimos que nos olvidamos de todo, que algo puede salir mal o que nadie nos prestará atención. Me sucede con frecuencia y siempre llevo un lapicero en la mano para descargarle mis miedos. ¿Cómo mejorar? Por mi trabajo tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar a muchos actores y actrices. De ellos aprendí que no tengo que ser siempre yo en el escenario; o, mejor dicho, que la persona que hará el Pecha Kucha será otra versión de mí -una máscara-, una que es capaz de mimetizarse con el tema, "ser el tema", y a partir de eso hablar con "verdad" -un asunto complejo, pero que sin dudas hará más verosímil mi exposición (confianza)-. Primero investigo, luego lo interiorizo, más tarde lo comparto y, finalmente, "lo suelto" y me quedo con lo que más resuena en mí.

Poco conocimiento de diseño gráfico. Es mi talón de Aquiles. Y es una cuestión de criterio, o falta de él: mi expertise va hacia lo sonoro, la palabra escrita y dicha, mas no hacia lo visual. Para evitar fallar en este aspecto, tengo que hacer muchas pruebas con las diapositivas, jugar con los colores, formas y texturas, y, finalmente, arriesgarme a elegir una.

Por lo anterior y a modo de conclusión, en mi Pecha Kucha apostaré por:

Diapositivas con fotos, fondos simples y neutros

Contar una historia que emocione o que, por lo menos, capte la atención a partir de que el público se vea reflejado en ella (empatía)

Ser claro con el objetivo de la presentación (contenido), con los conceptos y que el orden en el que los elementos son planteados sea lógico y fácil de seguir

Finalmente, también será importante aplicar la lógica del Feedforward: anticiparme a los comentarios de los profesores y alumnos sobre mi exposición; es decir, pensar en escenarios positivos y adversos y, a partir de ello, tomar decisiones en el presente.

I am... so obsessed with EPIC: The Musical.

Like- it is no joke.

I'm in an introduction theatre class at the college I go to on top of doing high school classes, right? (It's Dual Enrollment stuff, it takes a bit to explain lol).

NE Wayz... We're doing a project where we either make a video with a group or make a pecha kucha presentation on a musical or something relating to theatre. And I'm anti-social, so I'm doing the pecha kucha.

And I'm legit thinking about doing my pecha kucha on EPIC, like...

It has a grip on my freaking brain, bro...

Week 2: Minor-Project-Monday {Pecha Kucha}

Pecha Kucha! - Gesundheit!!

Having finished and held my Pecha Kucha presentation, I can tell you both took longer than expected.

This is the first slide of my presentation and it shows me in the middle, dressed in the colors of Winni the Pooh or Gryffindor, I guess but that won't do since I'm a proud Hufflepuff! I started off by telling the group my age, pronouns (because we are progressively inclusive like that 💅) and where I am from - Bavaria Germany. I was born where all the german stereotypes come from. Lederhosen, Schnitzel, Blasmusik and beer - all very bavarian, which is basically southern Germany.

I continued with things I miss about germany:

- The food

- The nature

Not so much the people however. My family situation is rather difficult and almost all my friends are in the UK apart from my dear bosom friend Milena.

Then I listed some things I hate about London/the UK:

- The tube

- The littering everywhere

- The constant overcast and cloudy weather

And to get back into their good graces I also listed some things I love about the UK and living in London:

- My boyfriend

- My friends

- Pepe's Piri Piri

- The diversity of people and cultures and food

I think this post would take ages if I went into every detail of every slide but I covered the broad topics of movies and shows I like, games I play, Artists I admire and work I have done in year 2 that I am most proud of.

It was a long but enjoyable Monday and a nice way of getting to know the people in my group. By now I have given up on making friends at uni btw. My first year I joined during covid so we barely saw each other in person and outside lectures there wasn't much socializing permitted or possible. In second year everyone seemed to be getting the hang of things while still trying to make up for the 1st year in terms of catching up with workshop inductions etc. And now by the time of 3rd year I think groups have formed already and people are busy working on their portfolio for job prospects.

I don't live in student accommodations so that part of student life I can't say much about and it means I am not forced to happen upon people from UAL outside of classes, which further complicated the making of friends.

Nor am I member of any societies apart from the Life Drawing Society, which is a really really good one but not necessarily one that lies emphasis on socializing or the building of friendships.

I was briefly a member of the R6 esports team of UAL before it went up in flames, so that's over with.

It's a weird one, the 3rd year. That much is for sure.
