At the beginning of this week, we were introduced to our first project in our level 6 interior design course. This project is to reimagine and reconfigure 4 spaces in the Salford Museum and Art Gallery. This includeds; A reception space, cafe, a shop and the mezanine. With a design consideration of attracting a younger audience into the Museum.
Once I had the brief, I decided to have a look around the building to get an initial feel for the building and conduct a photographic survey of the site. I also took this opportunity to take a look around the gallery exhibitions to observe the current artwork as this may influence my design.
Whilst conducting the photographic survey I felt inspired as the volume of space is grand and has a lot of potential, which is mainly unfulfilled.
I felt the current spaces as outdated and need uplifting and this could be done by not just changing aesthetic features such as materials and lighting but by also changing the layout of the existing spaces. This is due to the fact that I felt that there wasn’t any particular flow to the building, making walking around the space confusing and disorientating and in turn this can lead visitors to miss out on curtail exhibits such as the Lark Hill Exhibition which seems hidden away down an old corridor mainly used to access the toilets.
The Lark Hill exhibition itself is a fantastic piece of design work as it incorporated all sorts of design features to create a sensory experience. This is done by dark lighting, sound effects and different floor levels replicating a Victorian street. I feel like this sort of experience could be replicated throughout the gallery.
I felt that visiting the museum was a valuable experience for many reasons. The initial reason is that it enables me to get a real feel for the space and to kickstart my imagination into designing the space. Another reason is that by taking a photographic survey it will allow me to look back at the space to refer back to aspects for my design, in addition to this I will be able to use these photographs to sketch over and incorporate my design into the existing space. However, one disadvantage of this is that was only a quick visit and I feel I could have got more out of the visit by maybe making more notes of the materials, how they are used and if they have a specific purpose. Furthermore, the quality of the photographs is quite poor to this may put me at a disadvantage when trying to sketch from them as there may be lacking some clarity and definition to draw my design over the top.
From this experience, I learnt that the space is generally quite dated with an intuitional feel given from materials such as the lino flooring where you can see the seems and from the colour pallets used.
In conclusion, this was an extremely valuable experience although I could have made more out of one trip to make it even more valuable for ease of my design process. Other things I could have done whilst in the space would have been to stay there for longer and analyse how other people travel around the space and maybe see what they think of the space, what they enjoyed about it and what they didn’t.
If I was to have the opportunity to go back, I would take in every detail I could, think about how people move around each space, spend some time in each room and sketching my design ideas into the space.

The Lady Hale Building @salforduni is very interesting, very much like a bubble or cloud. This is ETFE or Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, the building was completed in 2007 . . . #university #salforduni #universityofsalford #salford #ladyhalebuilding #salfordbusinessschool #architecture #etfe #architectural #architecturephotography #architectureporn #archittetura #campus #peelparkcampus #architecture_greatshots #welovearchitecture (at University of Salford International)
