i have a thought about pjo that i can't quite articulate but it goes along the lines of:

athena gave annabeth as a gift to frederick because she liked his search for knowledge. in athena's eyes, any action of annabeth's reflects herself, which is why annabeth 'embarrassing' her had such strong consequences

poseidon fell in love with impertinent, stubborn sally jackson. percy wasn't a gift to her - he is a cumulation of all of her stubborn, steadfast love.

why wouldn't poseidon still love and aid percy when all of percy's insolence is why he loved sally in the first place?

I'm just gonna start by saying if Disney doesn't renue this for a second season they are stupid and will have missed out on a harry Potter level phenomenon.

- annabeth having to hold Grover back is so important to me because he's wanting to help percy but Annabeth knows this fight is to the death and any interruption would just get Grover killed.

- Annabeth also knowing he needs to prove himself as the son of poseidon and discover who he is.

- "let's kick the son of poseidon into a puddle right near the sea" I now understand why Athena is battle strategy and Ares is just war.

- THAT TSUNAMI JUST PARTING FOR PERCT US ICONIC AND HE JUST RUNS AND SWOOPS AND CUTS ARES

- my only critique is that Percy never does any movements to show its his power (which ik this is accurate to the books) but it comes off a little like he's just calling on Poseidon to do stuff. I wished they had some sort of indicator that it was Percy like maybe a slight movement or having the water pull back from the puddle he fell in and into the sea.

- I did think the fight was a little quick tbh but it still worked.

- the way I screamed "close your eyes close your eyes close your eyes!" When he was about to show his true form.

- Sally divorcing gabe is much much better than her just turning him to stone because it gives the message that she now recognises her son can look after himself and now she doesn't have to protect him anymore.

- I really like how it's his own hate for percy and everything percy has that gets him killed rather than straight up homicide. It really sets the idea that people like that will find their own downfall (which is ironic bc this trope is commonly used in ancient Greek tragedies)

season one of percy jackson is stunning. It's a masterpiece even with the changes and whilst there was definitely some timing issues and the cut to black became annoying, it was very, very good. If it is renewed for another season, it has a lot of potential, and I will be very excited to see how they adapt The Sea of Monsters for screen.

Mr. D. Just Mr. D. Also does not help he's played by one of my favourite actors who played one of my all-time favourite characters (aka Pimento). He's an ass, but a goofy ass. Like after watching the Insta preview of his convo with Percy, I knew he was going to be an ass about it, but I didn't expect him to say he was Percy's dad to get alcohol ToT.

Percy's sass: 100000/10

Walker's acting deserves an award.

Luke just Luke. The poor man sounds more sad than angry (Which honestly makes the finale 10x better if you think about it since it'll feel more like a twist for people who don't know)

Luke just Luke because he's so charismatic.

Percy learning archery and being in the forges on the comedy scale is 1000000000000/10.

Chris and Luke being besties and being close on-screen and Chris just getting more screen time. Do you guys think he's still unclaimed??? (If so... A+ parenting Lin, no wonder your son/s hates you)

THE PORTRAYAL OF ARES KIDS IN THE SHOW>>>>. Like we were always told how scary they were, but like in the dumb jock, bully way. I'm probs just nitpicking but I love how Chris literally says that Clarisse spends the first few hours hunting in the woods (Guerilla warfare tactics anyone?). Idk why but I think that just shows how dangerous the Ares kids are. Like the Athena kids are always hyped and everything for the strategic warfare, but cmon there HAD to be a reason why everyone was so worried bout the Ares kids joining the Battle of Manhatten. Like it had to be more than they were kids of the War god. (Hello the Spartans worshipped Ares and were one of the greatest warriors in history, they were just given a bad rep due to the Athenians writing down history and the myths)

Also, what's gonna happen with Chris and Clarisse???

My thoughts as I watched the Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 on Disney+

Episode by episode random thoughts below, but overall I loved it. The actors are really good at what they do and I love who they chose as Percy, Annabeth, Grover, Luke, Clarisse… etc.. all of them were fun to watch.

Yeah I was disappointed with the ways many of the scenes were done, but I also don’t think an exact copy of the book would have been relevant now. It’s definitely been adjusted to suit the time period and just because they were changed doesn’t automatically make them all bad changes.

Episode 1:

They’ve definitely made some changes which is obvious. They always do. But I love Walker as Percy. He does such a good job. “Okay… Why?” Was hilarious.

Somehow they made Sally even more amazing and her “death” even more sad. Though it’s an interesting change to make Sally do a lot of what Book Percy did in that fight.

Episode 2:

Luke and Percy’s relationship is making what’s coming even worse! The pat on Percy’s shoulder when leave Hephaestus’ cabin 😢 they are really showing how close Luke made himself to Percy.

Percy’s sass! Him during the waiting time of capture the flag was perfect

I kinda wish they had kneeled when he was claimed but meh I’m still good with this.

Episode 3:

“Oh geez. You seem busy. I’ll come back.” Poor Percy facing the Oracle

Medusa’s place brings up a lot of deep questions. I kinda like the way they took this. Bringing attention to the actual horrifying truth that is the gods’ cruel punishments is something I appreciate.

The conversation they have after everything is done was a nice touch. Letting us see them actually talk things out and see the bond slowly forming is amazing.

Episode 4:

The moment Percy changes places with Annabeth was perfectly done. Loved it!

Athena “my child embarrassed me so she can die for all I care” vs Poseidon “like hell I’m letting my son die and if that means I make a water tornado to snatch him from the air then I will”

Episode 5:

I love the popping their heads up from behind the concrete when talking to Ares.

Making it modern like Ares starting a fight on Twitter is so cool in a way. Making them “relevant” to the modern world is such an interesting take. I’m looking forward to seeing if they do it with the others too.

“Push down a flight of stairs” is very suspicious. That’s exactly what Percy said when choosing Annabeth.

Though also a thought… we are definitely getting a lot more of the gods than the books gave us. Never saw Hephaestus and it seems like we are gonna see Hermes next episode.

Episode 6:

Oh. They were wrong about who did it. That’s good at least. Figuring it out so early would not have been a good choice.

Annabeth stealing from the god of thieves 😭 even if he let her do it, for those couple of minutes it was hilarious

Santa Monica was more heartbreaking than I thought. Show Percy was really expecting his dad. But the fact he was actually there is something

Episode 7:

The lack of the Crusty fight is actually disappointing honestly

No DOA Recording… I loved that one. Dead on Arrival was just clever. And no pay raise conversation 😢

Oh no. Now we are down to 3 pearls. Show universe is really out here making Poseidon a better father by actually caring. First he was actually waiting to see Percy and then he gives 4 pearls.

Annabeth isn’t with them anymore 🤔 I don’t like that.

“Sanctuary” for just a second I was impressed with Hades then he explained then I realized it was incredibly pragmatic of him.

Wow. I hold no animosity to show Poseidon like I do Book Poseidon. The immediate answer to Sally… Wow!

I hadn’t really realized I had animosity to book Sally but Show Sally actually did her best to prepare Percy for the world where Book Sally just ignored it.

Woo! Let’s go Ares fight!

Episode 8:

And so begins Percy’s absolute hate against Ares that even transcends a goddess erasing his memories.

Ares didn’t curse Percy though…

Yo… Poseidon surrenders for Percy

And Show Zeus is better than Book Zeus at least for now. He’s at least willing to entertain the idea of Kronos rising.

List of My Favorite Things in The Lightning Thief Musical (as heard on audio)

Disclaimer: someone got me an audio of the show from 2017, so no, I have not seen the show. This is all gained from simple audio. Also this list used to be way longer like I have more awesome moments but I had to tone it own a lil’

First of all, Chris McCarrell started singing and i started cryiiing. This man lays so much emotion in Percy AND IT’S WHAT HE DESERVES

“Their father Kronos” “KROOONOOOOOSSSSS” (this happens two times btw it’s awesome)

Okay so on the cast album when Grover goes like “you’re not exactly...” and then Percy finishes it off with “normal” and Percy sounds angry and fed up. But then here he says it in a really sad and disappointed way and SOMEONE GIVE THIS BOY A HUG PLEAS

“we saw all this x-rated art. Museums are crazy” “the headmaster called me” “about the art?” (convo between Percy and Sally)

I love that James plays Chris’ step-father, uncle and best friend-turned-enemy and definitely more in one musical.

“If he was my kid-” “He’s not.” I stan Sally Jackson with all my heart ugh (convo between Gabe and Sally)

okay so i’m pretty sure that the last note in Strong is sung by both Sally and Percy on the cast album but not here and honestly??? it just shows that Sally realizes she can’t take care of Percy anymore and that he now has to do it alone; be strong on his own and i just made myself cry

“Hey look a goat! Hey little guy - GROVER????” (also this means that at some point Percy can only see his legs which makes me wonder what position Grover is in)

good kid reprise is giving me all the feels and i am crying bye.

also can we appreciate the strength it must have taken Annabeth to turn her back on Luke???? Like here’s this guy who’s been protecting her since forever, who literally was a hero to her because without him she wouldn’t have been alive. She probably idolized him, and she definitely loved him (as a brother or silly crush). But still she turns her back on him. That is strength.

And those were a few of my favorite things so you can probably guess how much i love this musical.

So my good friend @fictionisalwaysbetter and I got talking about our favourite demigod and I felt compelled to rant about something that has been bothering me for a long time. 

I am noticing with increasing consistency that fandom is turning certain characters/characters that follow certain tropes into caricatures of ego and vanity when at best those characters don’t deserve it and at worst this “fanon version” of that character directly and negatively contradicts the canon nuances of their personality and history. 

Take Percy Jackson. According to fanon, he’s a good-looking teenage boy prone to making sassy comments, dumb decisions and gets offended when Nico claims he’s not his “type”. 

Let’s look at that last one for a moment. The Percy Overreacting To Nico Basically Saying He Isn’t That Hot is an admittedly funny running joke, but it’s gotten to the point where a lot of the fandom seemed to forget that it’s not really a big aspect of Percy’s character at all.

The joke is that Nico’s comment (which was also a joke guys, remember?) was supposed to be a blow to Percy’s vanity or ego, but that side of Percy is just a tiny part of his overall character that has been blown out of proportion for the sake of a running joke at Percy’s expense.

Not only that, but that particular personality trait isn’t even very genuine, but rather a front that Percy has developed as a defense mechanism.

Here’s where it gets interesting. There’s another character that has been through the exact same treatment by their fandom: Jace Herondale from The Mortal Instruments Series. 

Jace is also a character known within the TMI fandom for his sass, his cockiness and his general “gorgeous and he knows it” attitude. In fact, in Jace’s case, it’s become so widespread that it has infiltrated every part of the TV show’s characterisation of him that it’s practically eclipsed every other aspect of his personality to the point where book!Jace and Show!Jace are barely the same character.

What do Jace Herondale and Percy Jackson have in common?

Percy and Jace are both victims of childhood abuse at the hands of a father figure.

When we meet Percy he is living with his mother, Sally, and step-father, “Smelly Gabe” who physically abused Sally and actively tried to kick a twelve-year-old Percy out of his own home.

- Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (thanks to @fictionisalwaysbetter for the pictures since I didn’t have the book on hand)

Jace was experimented on in utero and subjected to both emotional and physical abuse until the age of ten.

Both Percy and Jace act egotistical and obnoxious in order to compensate for feelings of inadequacy as an attempt to quiet their own doubts in their abilities or as a self-defence mechanism against others who could potentially hurt them.

Percy is a kid who grew up being told by everyone except his own mother that he was never good enough. Within the first few pages, Percy has established that he has been kicked out of every school he’s ever been to and even describes himself as a “troubled kid”, all because of his ADHD and dyslexia.

Even at the end of the first book, his reaction to his birth father (AKA the literal god Poseidon) saying he regrets Percy ever being born is just... resignation.

He doesn’t even argue.

This is someone who has a long history of low self-esteem throughout his childhood. At best, his egotistical personality later is a method of compensation, at worst a total facade.

Reducing either of these characters to their snarky, egotistical fronts all the time undoes all of the darker nuances of each character. These are both kids - kids - who suffered terribly during their early years and then went on to fight wars. Taking them at face value all the time isn’t fair to them and it isn’t fair to the fandom who was given these flawed, hurting heroes that still managed to find defiance and humor in their situations even in the face of all they had seen and done.

TL;DR: please be nicer to my sons. Thank you.

Percy Jackson fandom? :D

send me a fandom and i’ll list my five favorite characters

Oh man this is really difficult because so many of the characters are amazing… I’m going to stick to the first series for this, as there are so many awesome characters in the second and third series and the connected Egyptian and Norse series that I’d be here forever.

1. Percy himself! For one thing, the kid’s stream-of-consciousness is like 70% sass and snark, which is a sure-fire way to get me to love a character. But beyond that, he’s resilient, courageous, and steps up to defend his home, friends, and family repeatedly right from the start, even when he knows doing so can and usually will get him into trouble from authority figures. And he isn’t afraid to speak up and tell people what he thinks when he sees some kind of injustice going on.

2. Annabeth. While I admit she has her flaws (among them, being a lot rougher and meaner to Percy than he is to her), she’s clever and studious and proud of it, and won’t even try to pretend otherwise. She’s also not shy about throwing herself into a fight to protect her friends. I like her because she’s definitely not a “perfect” girl, but she comes across as very realistic given the seriously traumatic life she’s gone through.

3. Grover. He’s nobody’s idea of the typical hero; he’s young for a satyr, timid, anxious, very emotional, and not much of a fighter. But he is loyal - he’ll do pretty much anything for Percy, and is devoted to his personal quest of finding the lost god Pan - and he has great courage; despite his terror of Cyclopes and being underground, he faces both repeatedly for the sake of his friends and his quest and eventually gets recognised for his efforts.

4. Sally Jackson. She’s been through so much - losing her parents, having to give up her studies, falling for a god, raising Percy (given the trouble that boy can attract simply sitting still), living with an abusive husband for years just to protect her son… yeah, the fact she can handle the danger Percy constantly gets into and still be so kind and accepting of the strange people he meets is wonderful.

5. Poseidon. Absent father though he is, he comes across as one of the kindest of the gods, at least as far as his children are concerned. Where many of the others are harsh or critical of their kids, he treats Percy (and Tyson) with genuine affection and concern for their well-being and apologises for the fact that being his children puts them in danger. The one time we see him actually get angry at Percy (for breaking a rule usually punishable by death), he still listens, accepts the explanation, and forgives him.
