Plant of the Day
Tuesday 15 August 2023
A native species of northern coasts Mertensia maritima (oyster plant) is flowering on the sandy Orkney beach. This hairless perennial species trails on the ground and forms a prostrate cushion of blue-grey succulent leaves.

Gaura
Gaura seems to be a wildflower.
Although not native, gaura, Oenothera lindheimeri, can almost naturalize as if it were. All it needs is occasional watering through summer. It performs better with regular watering. Individual specimens live for only about four years. Some may last for only a single year. However, their abundant progeny are likely to replace and perhaps overwhelm them…

here where i am you need to leave the leaves and standing dead plants and such until mid-april or even may to make sure everyone is awake. i know the paperwasp tribe we had a friendly relationship with is all gone for the winter but i hope their new foundress is hiding somewhere safe in the leaf litter and will start a new nestful of neighbors in the springtime

Plant of the Day
Monday 1 August 2022
Considered as a wildflower or a serious weed Cirsium arvense (creeping thistle) grows on grassland and uncultivated soil. It spreads by lateral roots which are brittle and readily re-shoot if broken. In addition it spreads by air-borne seeds which are an important food source for wild bird species.

Gardening Catalogs
I received a flower catalog in the mail today, and it struck me what a great marketing ploy that is. When people are sick of winter, the snow, the dreary landscape, the gray skies, the unending cold, seeing the bright colors of a potential spring garden would bring out the checkbooks and charge cards of even the most casual gardeners.
If it weren’t for my tight budget (because of the horrendous…

Mariposa Lily by Arlene Schag
Via Flickr:
Mariposa Lily - Calochortus is a perennial California native and endemic plant. It's natural habitat is chaparral. It can be seen blooming from April to August, often with a red-brown petal margin. Sprouts from a bulb. This individual was found in Encinitas California at Quail Botanical Gardens in an undeveloped zone AKA "tribute" to native Indians ( with a ramshackle teepee of twigs that kids didn't even want to touch) and slight margin of land that probably was too expensive to pave over because it was steep and the parking lot next door was already large enough... Companion plant in the background is Del Mar Manzanita, a rare native to Southern California that I want to see planted more in the area. I took this photo during a field trip for a Horticulture class at a local community college. I had to sneak away to find most of our overlooked and increasingly rare natives. Unfortunately most the assignments were regarding non-native plants, what is up with that?

Geum
Geum has rustic appeal.
Old fashioned geum (or ‘avens’), Geum coccineum, was popular in rock gardens of the 1970’s because it clings to stone, and cascades somewhat. In modern gardens, it works just as well in large pots or planters, mixed with other perennials. The fuzzy foliage forms compact mounds about half a foot high and wide. The bright orange flowers with fuzzy yellow centers stand about…
