We at The Mill still can’t get enough of the Hair, Makeup & Prosthetics in ‘The Favourite’ so much so we have been trawling the web for any insights into the wonderful world of wigs, beauty spots and gout, yes gout (prosthetics) for weeks and have finally come across one of our favourite articles to date.

Throwback to turning @monicajoysherer into a 20’s woman named Geranium for a @betchsketch a few years back. #hairandmakeupbyme Tap for credits 💕 . Also what was really fun about this is that I used blue pigments to create depth and contour, just like makeup artists used to do for black and white film in the 20’s. Even though she had blues strategically placed on her face, this is how it turned out on camera. Hairstylist Frederick Glaser (1929-2010) met @Barbrastreisand at the beginning of her career and created many of her memorable hairstyles. This look was among the standouts from the film “On A Clear Day You Can See Forever” (1970). This intricate sculpted updo was created with a hand tied human hair wig pieces. Fo these type of large updos, a wire mesh form is created and covered with a wig cap. The form is attached to the base hair and rest is sculpted & styled until the form is fully covered. The ringlets and braids in this style are separate pieces, essentially built upon the base. Frederick was also a sculptor, which comes through in this beautiful sculpted look. ... ‘The Favourite’ Costume Display at Kensington Palace.

It is so rare to see exhibitions of Film & TV costumes, let alone with Wigs as well, which is why we at The Makeup Mill are getting on the next horse drawn carriage (we travel in style) direct to Kensington Palace to see the sumptuous display of costumes AND wigs from our new favourite film, ‘The Favourite’.

‘The Favourite’ explores the relationships and power struggles of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) and two of her closest female attendants: Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) and Abigail Hill (Emma Stone). Many of the historical events that inspired the film took place at Kensington Palace.

The stunning new display coincides with the film's UK release on 01 January 2019 and explores the creative process behind the costumes and wigs, Queen Anne's legacy as a stateswoman and her relationships with Sarah and Abigail.

The costumes have been created by three-time Oscar winning costume designer Sandy Powell with wigs by Hair and Make-Up Designer Nadia Stacey.
