The Perks of Being a Deus Ex Machina
Tumblr media
So I recently binged The Perks of Being An S-class Heroine/ A Transmigrator's Privilege and I need to talk about it or I'll implode.
I apologize in advance because this is gonna be a long post as I can't stop hyperfocusing on it and I need to scream into the void ([tumblr]).
This series honestly has one of my favorite uses of an overpowered MC in a while. I've also seen a lot of people complain about Ailette being too powerful and how much it hurts the story. I've only read until ch170 in the webnovel so I could be wrong but I don't think that's really the story they're trying to tell.
Ai is our main character but she's not the correct main character. She's so strong and gets so much help from the system that nothing poses a real threat to her. I can see how that could be boring for some people. But she was never supposed to be in this story. It's heavily implied that if Tesilid dies in her timeline, the whole world resets again without her ¹ (under spoilers) and it'll be like her version of Ai never existed (Manhwa ch31). It's not just about how well she can survive, it's also about how well she can protect Tesilid. Suddenly this story becomes an escort mission. She's Resident Evil 4 Leon and it's game over when Ashley dies. Or more aptly, she's Gandalf, trying to protect the self-sacrificing Frodo as he journeys to Mordor. It doesn't matter how powerful she is, if Tesilid dies anyways. She can't just leave him alone to kill the big bad on her own, either - Tez dies from like 500 different causes in the original story.
!! Webnovel spoilers under the cut !!
In my opinion, the story doesn't really start until Tesilid's regressions start (which probably won't be until s3 in the manhwa). For some people this is understandably too long. But it's really only a power fantasy during the tutorial period; when she finally gets to meet with (1)17th Tesilid, she turns into a walking Deus Ex Machina. It makes for an interesting dynamic imo, since Tez's powers are so restrictive and he has little choice but to be a self-sacrificing pushover. He even goes so far as to tank for her when he thinks she's about to take a killing blow. On the other hand, she’s all-powerful with a questionable sense of morality. It's like if Ai was Saitama (another Deus Ex!) but he dies if Mumen Rider dies. You know it'll all work out when they arrive, but it's incredibly tense if they're separated. It's cool to read a story from the protector's point of view for once- to see things from their perspective as they try to keep alive the main characters always running around trying to get themselves killed. Especially since we basically already know that there's virtually no way for Tesilid to succeed alone. Ailette has virtually all the power to help Tez and she thinks she knows how, but the farther we get into the story the more we learn that she probably doesn't understand as much as she thinks. Does she know how to end the loops? Or that Tesilid can loop again to a previous iteration? It's a mystery wrapped in power-fantasy skin.
¹ When Reed repeatedly kills Tez before the end of the tutorial, the whole world resets. This suggests that time in this universe revolves around Tesilid and it doesn’t flow for others if he’s dead.

Thinking of how Ailette’s first order of business when the 17th round starts is to rescue the villagers and then rescue Terry. I didn’t think about it too much originally but wasn’t Ailette taking chances here that Tesilid wouldn’t make it before she got there? Like Tesilid maybe did in a sense not make it which is why we have 117th Tesilid instead of 17th Tesilid. Did she simply think she would have enough time according to her knowledge from the book? It’s true Ailette also does care about civilians, but I’m wondering if another reason she does this is for Reed’s sake and to prevent Reed from having killed people.

when you stop and think about it it’s actually ridiculously funny how obsessed w/ ailette tesilid is. like they met twice in the tutorial period, once when they were 10 or something and another time a decade later. ailette saves him twice and shows him Human Kindness (shocking!!1!) and THEN a hundred lifetimes come and go in the blink of an eye, and the only memories tes has of ailette are from 8million years ago and are hella hazy. and YET.
maybe this is a testament to how starved tesilid was for pure human connection. to be able to exist outside the strict gaze of order and goodwill, even with just one person. to be saved, deemed worth saving; to not be seen as a tool but a living, breathing person.
to pick up his sword not for the sake of the world, but for the sake of his world.

no okay can you imagine being a fan of the original Infinite Returns to Save the World. Your poor pookie who has a horrible life finally has a viable love interest. It's the slow burn of all slow burns, but it's okay bc at least your poor pookie has some light in his life. You spend probably a couple hundred chapters watching Muriel and Tesilid dance around each other, and it's as sweet as it's frustrating because aw, look, they're drawn to each other life after life after life :) They're meant to be :)
Then they FINALLY get together after probably several years irl and a couple of arcs later it turns out that Muriel was a backstabber the whole forty-five rounds. What kind of deranged author writes something like that?!?!? I would rip the book to shreds 😭😭

speaking of comparisons, tesilid argente and yoo joonghyuk are both tragic regressors, but i genuinely think tesilid gets more of a raw deal than yjh
yjh may have had to go through 1800+ regressions but a) he chose to do it (even if he doesn't remember at the time) and b) can make his own decisions. like he has free will and can express his emotions and stuff
not only does tesilid not choose to go through his regrssions and has it forced on him by an uncaring god, he also has to police his own actions (and possibly emotions/thoughts??? can't remember exactly how throughly the stigma monitored him) lest his stigma act up and decide he's committing a sin and punish him for it
yjh can let off steam by murdering people/constellations and tearing down the star stream system and has clear goals and a plan of how to end the regressions, even if both change over time. but tesilid basically has to grin and bear it while he's fed shit from literally everyone around him unless he's willing to act up and be both be in pain and become weaker. also i don't think he has any idea of how to end his regressions other than saving the world?? i need to finish reading the novel lol
no wonder tesilid went completely and homicidally insane in a fraction of the number of regressions that yjh went through. i would too if i was forced to act like a goody two-shoes while going through hell

Remembering the scene where smol Terry grabbed Ai’s hand and asked insistently how she knows who he is…… And then Ai was like “YOU ARE HURT”
Awww It’s so cute that for Ai it’s
Terry’s wellbeing >>>>>>>>> everything else
(A bit spoiler for a very-very late chapters)
And the reason why Ai is against Reed’s plan to destroy the world isn’t only because her loved ones live here, but because it is bad for Reed too. He deserves a good, fulfilling life in a world that loves him. will only increase hatred towards him :c

The Perks of Being an S-Class Heroine
I used to drop this the moment they introduced the isekai protag with game like feature upgrade and make her an op child, but I picked it up again cus I saw a spoiler saying she will be a knight? In a way? And now that I read more of the chapters it's actually quite funny and relatable still. And the gods in her world is so goofy it's entertaining to read even if they only appear in the form of bubble speech description lol
The art itself is pretty, mc and her brother has pink hair and their dad *cheff kiss* adorable

ok for all the details in the new s-class heroine chapters my brain could focus on, it chose the rosary rings. specifically the part where tesilid looks at his Religion Stats and sees the thing dragging strict order’s overall grade down is the lack of 8th grade power believers. but standing right next to him is supposedly the saint of the order church??? and he’s seen her power, he knows she’s strong. she’s got 8th grade divine abilities. so the only real answer to this conundrum is that she doesn’t believe in strict order and goodwill which is a HELL of a realization— because doesn’t that mean the god she always talks about could be there and active??? maybe they can talk about her cool new religion??? did tesilid see this or did it (uncharacteristically) fly under his radar????? maybe he just doesn’t want to talk about it while they’re still in demon territory or something but :biting at the bars of my cage: I NEED to KNOW if HE KNOWS!!!!!! this has me hook line and sinker PLEASE . PLEASE

My favorite thing about Ailette and Tesilid is that for once, he's not the strongest character. The one to depend on. The one who has to save the world. When Ailette is around, he doesn't have to sacrifice so much. He gets the luxury of being selfish, being weak. Finally, he can depend on someone else without worrying that they'll betray him or get hurt.
He's spent so long going through everything alone- I'm glad that he finally has someone he can turn to.
