god, dog training is so much more brain-intensive than everything i was doing before. i mean maybe it'll get less so as i go on, but before this i was basically making tasks for myself to keep my mind active. when i was a grooming apprentice and the dog was moderately difficult to well behaved, so like. literally anything short of very difficult and requiring me to be very vigilant, i was writing podcasts in my head. ESPECIALLY when blowdrying. checking for stress signals and adjusting away from nippy dogs and changing posture was something my body just did automatically. if i had any downtime i went up front and Organized even though it wasn't my job. if an invoice came in i was like gimme that i need something to Do.
working at a kennel required a bit more strategy but it eventually became automatic. arranging run assignments when we were near capacity and had multiple dogs that were dog aggressive, could only be next to certain dogs, fence jumpers, or needed to be quarantined was like playing tetris for a few minutes but that got to be second nature fast as well.
but this!!! this is like. i have to pay so much attention all the time to one dog till they Get It. then we do the next thing. and again. and again. then i switch dogs. all day. it's so nice.
ps open play daycare was very brain intensive in the sense that it was Actively Melting Constantly; i would not work in an open play facility again for love or money unless it was extremely low volume at scheduled intervals, like. five dogs for half an hour then they get housed separately
