As time goes on since finishing P5R I feel like I'm most likely to go with Akechi being alive post-game in my AU. The specifics of it depends on strikers (which I haven't played yet) but at the center of Akechi being alive post-game in regards to shuake, to me, is the idea that he and Ren can get their wish on their own terms
From what I've seen that section in that one artbook basically confirms that Maruki's reality in regards to them is just as much Akechi's wish as it is Ren's. I believe there's more to Akechi's wish then just Ren alone, which can be inferred based on the bad ending and things leading up to it, but Ren's definitely a major part of it
Akechi's whole character throughout the game is heavily tied to how much control he has over his own life, and in my mind a lot of Ren's character is as well, especially in relation to their dynamic. They were both chosen by higher powers to inevitably go against each other, and the only time they have a chance at actually living a life where they could be together happily is because someone else is pulling the strings
They can't accept Maruki's version of reality even if they both desperately want it, because it's all just a lie, just another way they are being controlled because someone or something thinks they know what's best for society and is trying to reach that goal. So both Ren and Akechi let their wish go, choosing to face the truth of the reality they live in instead, a reality in which they don't even have a chance at a happy ending because Akechi is dead
But the thought that they both, after everything that happened in the game, can try to make things work between them and work towards having a happy life together if Akechi is alive post-game feels really meaningful to me. There's no outside influence destining them to fight each other, and there is no one controlling reality to force a world in which they are happy. Instead they have control of their lives now, and they can choose to make their wish real for themselves. They're in control of making a world where they are happy

Something a lot of people mistakenly believe is that Akechi enjoys the work he does for Shido and that he takes the orders to kill without any resentment or regret. These text messages shed some light on the way he thinks and show that this is not actually the case.
Unfortunately, these texts are entirely missable if you finish the treasure route to Sae's Palace too early. As a result, this crucial characterization is often overlooked and people take what they know about characters like Persona 4's culprit and Persona 3's traitor and assume that Akechi is playing it straight.
But even without these obscure texts, it's not like the game is subtle about this. Akechi's lack of freedom and agency is a recurring aspect of his character that people will often cast aside because it's much easier to boil him down to "crazy serial killer" than actually look at the complexity of his situation and his own victimhood.
Throughout his Royal confidant, Akechi's perfectly crafted mask cracks several times. Moments like this show him offering an out, even if he's MUCH happier if you don't consider it.
He doesn't WANT Joker to change. As much as he claims to hate Joker, he admires his convictions. Wishes he had what Joker had. Wishes he could have been more like him. See: the Gun About rank up where he mentions how he used to want to be a hero of justice.
The creepy smiles and shit you see on 11/20 and in parts of the engine room are another mask Akechi wears. Akechi ALWAYS swaps out his masks to best serve his situation. Yet he still tells Shido not to kill the thieves, that Morgana is just a cat, and is perfectly content to leave them alone, and after his fight in the engine room, when the mask literally breaks...
We see his regrets on full display. He isn't proud. He's done making excuses. All those little times the mask broke in the Royal confidant were ways to set up this moment. He genuinely cares SO much about Joker, but that caring was dangerous to his objectives, so he HAD to hate him. He HAD to want to kill him to achieve his objective, and yet...
He still cares. He's putting out spikes in third sem, no doubt because he suspects his own fate should they destroy Maruki's world, but...

i had a huge revelation. So we all know joker does little doodles in his diary
and if you havent seen em already here some of them
So im running on the assumption he also does these doodles here
Which i thought yusuke did before i replayed the game but then i realized its impossible bc well
Also joker furiously scribbling what morgana is describing would be very silly and i think thats better than a its just a game excuse and he can have his iconic shit eating grin doodles nd this is deffo not me reaching into the stratosphere trust
