ANTHROPOCENTRISM:

For my first post, I have decided to focus on the concept of anthropocentrism. Very basically, anthropocentrism can be defined as human centered thinking. In the case of environmental geography, anthropocentrism is the notion of having human centered consideration above that of environmental  consideration. What this means, in terms of environmental ethics, human rights are placed above the rights of anything else, whether that be plants, animals, etc. This notion is human centered and all about human benefit. In order to illustrate this notion in the light of animal rights, I have chosen to showcase a picture of my pug, Bagel. Bagel is six years old and basically the love of my life, but his entire existence is anthropocentric. Pugs have been inbred over time to look the way that they do. An article called “The Evolution of Petface” from Smithsonian.com explains this concept. “The purebred concept emerged in the Victorian period, when middle-class city dwellers started regularly keeping pets for themselves and their children, rather than just farm animals. Around this time, the eugenics movement preached that it was possible to breed “pure” and ideal animals and humans.” The article goes on to ascribe that not only is the “smushed face” a byproduct of excessive inbreeding, but so is the curly tail most typically associated with pugs. Their face shape can cause substantial breathing issues, while their curly tail is a malformation that can cause spinal problems and hip dysplasia. In short, pugs, while cute, are not supposed to look like this. They have been bred over time to have these specifically qualities to make them more appealing to humans. This idea of pure-breeding is completely anthropocentric in that it values human desire for a dog to look a specific way, over what is actually best for the animal. As mentioned in my introduction post, I am posting both my good and bad contributions to the environment. When I got Bagel, I did get him from a breeder, but was seriously lacking in knowledge about how pugs were bred. I just knew that I wanted a pug, and I wanted once because of their physical qualities. It never occurred to me that any issue Bagel might have was a direct result of my desire for him to look a certain way.
