More thoughts about Coulson, PhiLMD, and May...

*Spoilers for all of AoS/S7.

How many times does Phil Coulson have to say “Don’t bring me back to life if I die” before people respect his choice and his personal autonomy?

Ever since the first season of this show he has been adamant that people not forcibly bring him back to life when he dies. He literally chewed out Fury for doing it.

We were front row seat to his agony throughout S1, S5, and S7 about how the other characters won’t respect his wishes and about him feeling wrong/out of place when they kept forcing him back to life.

It took everything in PhiLMD this season to finally separate Coulson’s feelings of wanting to rest from the anger at his/Coulson’s wishes being ignored and from his (PhiLMD) own new feelings as an individual being. He finally settles on trying to figure out who he is at the end of the season while still being open to having relationships with the others. This was such a healthy and positive change for him. And it was even healthier to have all the people he/Coulson loved actually respect his choice on whether to deactivate or not instead of trying force to him to be with them.

May will be fine. She has always had a will to keep living and keep moving forward that Coulson, frankly, did not share after he was killed by Loki. And Coulson’s desire to finally rest only grew stronger the more times he was killed and resurrected.

May has a life outside of Coulson that she values. She has a desire to nurture her own future as a mentor and as a teacher. She is not unhappy or miserable. She has reconciled with Bahrain and her title as the Cavalry. She has reconnected to her emotions in a real and tangible way. She is finding fulfillment in her new career and her new empathy power. She is at peace for the first time in over a decade. She has been launched into a fresh, new stage of her life with so much to discover about herself and the way she fits into the world.

Would she be happier with PhiLMD? Maybe. I actually don’t know. PhiLMD is not Coulson. He’s not a build-a-boyfriend for her to have instead of the actual man she loved. May expressed real frustration earlier this season over the back and forth with him dying and not dying. That was painful for her and she very clearly stated that she does not want to go through that any more. PhiLMD has parts of Coulson and I honestly think she could really fall for this version of him too but there would always be this painful reminder that her Coulson is still dead. I don’t want that for her, at all.

I love Philinda, I really do...but I love May, Coulson, and now PhiLMD as individuals more. I’m okay with an open ending for them where they are both happy and finding peace with themselves as their own persons while also being open to each other if they so choose. There is a real emotional truth to that.

The reality is that May and PhiLMD’s story is far too complicated and messed up to just go, “Why can’t they kiss and be in love?” Like, it’s...not that simple???? A hopeful open ending for them is the best that they could have done without completely disrespecting the journeys all three characters have been on this season and long before.

It’s hard to write posts for next week when I fundamentally don’t think we’re ending up in remotely the same situation the characters are all in now, so why spec on what they might do when I know the answer is going to be something else?

If philinda don’t get back together romantically next week I’m fine with that. If they do decide to try and start over together I’m good there too. They’ve been brave enough to do that together before. If we see them say goodbye to each other and get some peace I will cry buckets but I’m good with that scenario as well. All I need to see next week is some affirmation of no matter what I will always care about you which was already all over their faces last week and that they’re both at peace with however it ends up. There was no closure for anyone to be had in s6. They both deserve a little more than that here at the actual end.

There’s two hours left to do it. That’s enough time.

rewatching AoS finale...i’ll never get over how May literally said in 6x01 “Life isn’t meant to be lived alone” after losing Coulson for the SECOND TIME! and then in the finale she’s...alone??? I just don’t understand why after A YEAR in that finale get together Phil and Melinda were both ALONE LIKE?

Melinda May, after every single fucking thing that’s happened to her, deserved better imo as a person, character and lover. Idk man I hope there’s a spin-off or in the next Marvel movie there’s some time travel thing and the real Coulson is brought back to life or May and PhiLMD get to be happy and content together knowing they have all the time in the world to be happy now because honestly that’s what they deserve.

i left this show after s5 because i just couldn’t watch May and Daisy grieve like that. AGAIN 😭 (ft Lincoln, Tripp, Bahrain, Andrew) But, here i binged s6-s7 because I saw Sousa make a cameo and I really thought philinda would get their second (honestly idek how many) chance to be happy together: arguably everyone on the show went through shit, but May and Daisy went through the WRINGER on that show and I swear to god i’m so fucking upset philindaisy didn’t end up staying together. what a waste. (god i remember following the skyeward and philinda tags in s1 being so naive LMAO)

2020 was not my year for ships and showrunners continue to disappoint me 😗✌🏽 (side eyes david shore once again) but I’ll be bitter about that ending. Idk, as an avid marvel fan and a fan of the show, philinda should’ve gotten a better ending. I’m grateful they’re both alive (sort of alive?), but damn can’t showrunners just let their characters be happy in the end even if it’s not blissful just SOMETHING? Well, here’s to hoping other shows don’t end with fans yearning for literal crumbs of happiness instead of the showrunners just treating fans better :-)

maybe i’m still bitter about the good doctor season 3 finale(y’all already know) and how marvel handled Nat’s death + abc just fucking me over constantly but damn i wish there were showrunners that were more in-tune with their fans. or at least gave a shit.

shoutout to all the fanfic writers i’ve been knee-deep in it post-finale, y’all really just keep feeding us i’m so appreciative.

well what an unsatisfactory ride, but nonetheless appreciative neither of them died, again. and those glances in the last few minutes, yeah that quake spinoff should happen and immediately feed philinda fans imma be honest because we have been ROBBED consistently.

That episode was amazing!

**Spoilers for AoS 7x08

As I thought it would be. All the focus on the characters’ emotional journeys. *chef’s kiss*

I absolutely LOVED the focus on Elena. Her emotions and past. I loved the bonding with May and May’s power expansion.

So as May’s emotions have started to come back her powers aren’t disappearing but instead they are expanding, growing more complex and stronger. Love the entire concept of that.

Elena’s power expansion too!!! Now she doesn’t have to bounce bag, she’s just a regular speedster. IDK how it jives with the comics but I’m here for it. It’s the last season so we might as well go big or go home.

I teared up so bad when they showed Elena’s flashback. Like...I can’t believe that happened to her. I’ve always wanted to know more about her family and past but now I’m just so sad. Her parents are gone, her uncle, and as of S3 her cousin is gone too. It’s no wonder she clings so strongly to the team and to Mack now. She’s lost so much. She can’t bear to lose them too.

Loved seeing a Jiaying before Whitehall irreparably hurt her. She still felt like the core of who she was (a leader dedicated to her people) but without all the hatred and rage that turned her down a wrong path. Also, Daisy has a sister?!?!?! 

But I love that cuz it makes so much fucking sense. Jiaying is decades if not centuries old. Of course she had whole other lives before meeting Cal. She probably had several children. Daisy could really have whole other family members out there that she doesn’t even know exist.

Now I just want to see her meet them and get to know them. I want Daisy and Kora to meet and really get to know that they are sisters. Maybe that can help her come back from Nathaniel’s influence. BTW, who do we think is her dad? Obviously it’s not Cal as he would’ve been a baby when Kora was born. Another Inhuman likely. Not Li as he seems too young as well, considering Kora looks to be in her 30s.

PhiLMD’s existential crisis was heartbreaking. I never even thought about the idea that he still has the same human urges to sleep, eat, etc. even though he doesn’t have to anymore. It was so horrifying to think of him stuck in that TV monitor and having the same urges yet not being able to do anything about it. Do we think they’ll try to allow him to adjust his coding or would that alter him too much? And should they?

We only got a few DaisySous crumbs but I’ll take them. Daisy confiding in her dad about Sousa saving her. “He pulled me from the wreckage...I’m glad he’s here.” Bitch, me too!

Well...I guess the timeline is completely effed now. Fucking Nathaniel!!! It makes me so angry to see him using Daisy’s power, her birthright. Disgusting. And the fact that he’s going to do that to other Inhumans. My god.

The Malick family really has turned out to be some of the better villains in this show. I need them to throw the entire lineage in the trash, asap. To think they grew out of a 2 minute Powers Booth cameo in the Avengers all those years ago. Wild.

Next ep we’re getting a time loop story. I’m ready!!! It’s not a sci-fi show if you don’t have at least one time loop ep.

This time was different than what little Phil remembered of the last time.

Everyone was there for one. There wasn’t quite so much to grieve. There wasn’t any mission to rush off on, so they lingered a little more. It was nice to know where Mack and Elena were headed, nice to say the goodbyes to Fitz and Simmons he hadn’t really gotten to last time. Not the right way at least. It was nice to sit with Daisy for a while, just until it felt like time.
