Okay. For some time now, I’ve had this Not-So-Crack Theory that One Punch Man takes place in a Philadelphia.
Not in the Philadelphia, but in a Philadelphia. What is the distinction, you ask? Well, it’s explored in a short play by David Ives which I pseudo-legally staged in Washington Square Park, once upon a time:
AL: Don’t panic. You’re in a Philadelphia. MARK: I’m in a what? AL: You’re in a Philadelphia. That’s all. MARK: But I’m in— AL: Yes, physically you’re in New York. But, metaphysically, you’re in a Philadelphia. MARK: I’ve never heard of this! AL: You see, inside of what we know as reality there are these pockets, these black holes called Philadelphias. If you fall into one, you run up against exactly the kinda stuff that’s been happening to you all day.
MARK: Why? AL: Because in a Philadelphia, no matter what you ask for, you can’t get it. You ask for something, they’re not going to have it. You want to do something, it ain’t gonna get done. You want to go somewhere, you can’t get there from here.
Essentially, as soon as the universe identifies the thing you want, it moves that thing farther away from you.
King wants to get stronger, but everyone is too intimidated by his “prowess” to train him.
Saitama would give anything to lose a fight (which would be so much more interesting than winning! maybe even fun!), but he’s forever doomed to be the victor (and yet he will rarely be recognized as such)
Garou wants to be the perfect monster, but he’s an abject failure which is why his whole “absolute evil” shenanigans backfires to plain old heroism.
I suspect it finally goes away when you reconcile your desires and embrace non-attachment (AKA “do the right thing, even when it doesn’t directly benefit you, especially when nobody is looking”) but that’s a digression for another day.
“The Philadelphia” is part of a series of plays called All in the Timing. You can find some amateur performances on Youtube, as well as a script. It’s short and sweet and a lot of fun, albeit a bit dated -- if I never hear a male character call a female character “sweetcheeks” again, it will be too soon. Still, it’s something I always rec as a well-structured & well-written comedy sketch.

my director: the worst performances of this play are the ones that take themselves too seriously
me already coming up with a tragic backstory for the main character of this 5 minute one act: oh interesting
