Philthy Rich \ Yung X –– Principles & Morals (FOD Ent)

Philthy Rich swears that almost every CD is his last, that he’ll quit his solo career after this one and work only as a CEO of his FOD label. It is most generous of him to give voice to the new California artists and bring a lot of guests on his solo projects. But it is also most unfortunate that his signees don’t even have a quarter of his talent.

Principles & Morals is another sad adventure in which Philthy Rich brings onboard a young MC who doesn’t have a lot (if anything) to say. The whole tape is just eight songs and 20 minutes. You have to assume that even Philthy Rich wasn’t sure his new protégé could pull this out.  Principles & Morals is too short to showcase Yung X from all sides but long enough to gives us a sample of his talent. Yung X is a quite competent artist. On “Buckle Up” he imitates the late Young Slo-Be but doesn’t come close to the level of Young Slo-Be’s wordplay. On “Hooker” Yung X sings a verse and a chorus, obviously with auto-tune. He crafts a catchy hook without auto-tune on “Attitude” but that’s still not enough to make this song memorable.

The problem with Yung X (and half a dozen other FOD’s signees) is that he has nothing to say and has poor imagination. These artists are competent technically but they can’t write a decent song. Their vocabularies are limited.

You might file Principles & Morals in the annals of hip hop failures if it weren’t for “Written in Stone,” the lone Philthy Rich solo track.  The song came out as a single first, and was probably included on this tape to bulk up a thin offering. Good idea. This song is not only a highlight of the tape but also one of the best songs of the first half of the year. “Written in Stone” is everything Principles & Morals is not: it’s lean, memorable, catchy, a diss track only Philthy Rich could master (and he remains not only a King of Oakland but also a king of disses).

This song should have remained a single and Principles & Morals should not have seen a light of day at all. Philthy Rich remains a king of disses. but his taste in artists remains poor.

SieteGang Yabbie - Bowm Bowm

Een andere link die gelegd wordt is met Fetti Mac, die al een tijdje op de radar van onminerstig als een top hat uit San Diego (zie NoBFE 3). Maar zoals hij op één van de laatste albums zei "I need some of that SieteGang shit". Hier en daar waren er al wat lose tracks, er kwamen optredens en inmiddels is er ook een Fetti Mac x SieteGang Yabbie album.

Dat album volgt kort na de solo effort van Sietename Keek met producties van 88ThaGang dat sowieso het luisteren waard is. Naast de inmiddels bekende gezichten als de Professional Boyz Yung X (die de show steelt) en P.T. Mulah ook met een featuring van AzChike. De Azcult had op hun beurt weer een track met Keek.

Allemaal maakten ze individueel waves in de afgelopen jaren, maar ook toen was het nog interessanter als het samenkwam.

The Year the Stars Crashed: Ray Garraty’s 2023 in Rap

Peezy is writing the most disgusting rap in 2023

Let’s be honest: we can’t just have exciting years in music. The year people stepped on the Moon was more exciting than the one when they didn’t. We love to cheer when during a year we discover new talents, when we are buried under tons of great stuff which just keeps coming. But we shoegaze when our favorite musicians fall off. We tend to stay silent about it.

And in 2023 I mostly watched artists I admired go wrong. It was painful and embarrassing but also sobering. It is a price artists pay when they enter this game. They are creative and genius and entertaining until they are just not.

Mac J was hooked on the Auto-Tune, so his latest tapes were full of bad singing and not very good lines. EST Gee and Lil Yachty went even more mainstream which in political terms would mean far far right. The Alchemist did a lot of production for the artists that don’t deserve it. ShittyBoyz drifted aimlessly, and their best album this year is not even under their name (it’s Lando Bando’s Family Business). Cash Kidd is not so funny anymore (kid you not). BandGang Lonnie Bands got too caught up in his mind games.

Yet it is Peezy and Valee who had the most embarrassing fall in 2023. Which is hardly surprising for those who have followed them since day one. Valee now is a proper elevator music artist, filling his anemic songs with AI-generated lines. Peezy, top-5 worldwide just a few years ago,  is now writing the most disgusting rap music, and he even admitted that. Signs of rot were visible in both last year, so nothing really new is here.

I just kept trying to follow the ones I liked (mostly Michigan-based), and the one who grew up from a Rio Da Yung OG sidekick (and a blood brother) to a fully mature artist with his own unique style is Louie Ray. While Rio is still locked up, Louie Ray is keeping his torch. I enjoyed nothing more this year than his solo tapes, and his collabs with YN Jay. Let’s hope the next year will be better than this one.
