#PHnews: BSP 28-day securities rate up despite undersubscription

MANILA – The rate of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) 28-day securities rose Friday as investors continued to look for yields given the elevated inflation rate. 

 Data released by the central bank showed that the average rate of the debt paper increased to 1.9444 percent from 1.8000 percent during the auction last March 5.

 The BSP offered the securities for PHP80 billion, the same as last week.

 However, tenders reached PHP77.45 billion, resulting in a bid coverage ratio of 0.9681.

 In a statement, BSP Deputy Governor Francisco Dakila Jr. said the auction committee accepted all the bids amid the increase in the weighted average interest rate. 

 Dakila attributed the recent upticks in the BSP bills to “market participants’ search for yields amid rising inflation expectations.” 

 He said the rise in the securities’ interest rate, however, remains in line with market expectations. 

 “Moreover, the auction results reflect the impact of the settlement of the retail treasury bonds earlier this week as well as market’s anticipation of the Easter holidays,” he said.

 Even with the undersubscription in this week’s BSP bills auction, Dakila said “financial system liquidity remains ample.” 

 “Up ahead, the BSP’s monetary operations will continue to be guided by its assessment of the latest liquidity condition and market developments,” he added. (PNA)

BACOLOD CITY – The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board in Western Visayas (RTWPB-6) will hold public consultations on the proposed Pandemic Emergency Relief Assistance (PERA) in the coming weeks.

Labor representative Wennie Sancho said on Wednesday the body will set the schedule of the consultations at their next meeting on March 11.

The granting of the PHP25 PERA was manifested in the labor sector’s position paper dated Oct. 19, 2020.

Sancho, secretary-general of the Negros-based General Alliance of Workers Associations, said the rising cost of living as evidenced in the unabated increases in the prices of basic goods and services is the primary reason for the workers’ demand for another round of wage adjustment.

“It is only proper that the Wage Board should heed the plea of the workers for amelioration before we will be engulfed by the economic recession,” he added.

Sancho said the “motu proprio” move of the RTWPB-6 to evaluate the economic conditions, assess wage rates, and public hearings and consultations relevant to their manifestation on the issue of PERA steps in the right direction.

Earlier, the labor sector announced its plan to push for a PHP80 to PHP100 increase in daily minimum wage workers if the RTWPB-6 will not grant the proposed emergency allowance.

Current minimum wage in Western Visayas ranges from PHP310 to PHP395 per day, depending on the sectoral classification.

Citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, Sancho said as of January 2021, the purchasing power of the peso is PHP0.77.

He said this means that the nominal daily wage of PHP395 for commercial and industrial workers is worth or equivalent to only PHP304.15 in terms of real wage.

A worker in the private sector is losing about PHP90.85 per day due to the erosion of his purchasing power, which is about 2- percent reduction from his daily income, Sancho added.

Each RTWPB is composed of the Department of Labor and Employment regional director as ex-officio chairman; regional directors of the National Economic Development Authority and Department of Trade and Industry as ex-officio vice-chairmen; and, two representatives each from the worker and employer sectors as members. If you read my blogs or know me personally, you will definitely say these. Why is she writing about a milk tea shop again? I thought she said that she has a list of milk tea shops she only visits and doesn’t give new shops a second look.

My answer is yes, I do keep a list of milk tea shops I only visit and I don’t visit new milk tea shops anymore. Well, except for this one because I gave my younger cousins their Christmas gifts over the holiday break. One of those gifts is a milk tea metal straw. After opening the gift my youngest cousin then shouts, “Milk tea tayo!”

The Milk Tea Shop

TEA + BAR opened in July 2019. I found out about them by stumbling on an Instagram post and saw that they were located somewhere in Visayas Avenue. I couldn’t find them at first but one weekday when the vehicle I was on stopped because of traffic, I looked up and saw a light on the second floor of this building. There I saw the name TEA + BAR.

Their signage gave me the impression that they have probably had a cool place. But since I wasn’t in the mood for some milk tea, I didn’t get out of the vehicle. Fast forward to the holiday season, my assumption was right!

TEA + BAR does have a cool and cosy place to hang out. They have the typical chairs and tables, a couch area and of course, the bar area. They also feature some nice light fixtures, neon lights as well as other elements that perfect for the shop. It wasn’t big though but it has enough space for a few people to enjoy some milk tea, snacks and chat with friends or cousins.

The Milk Teas

TEA + BAR has quite a selection of milk teas under various categories. They have their House Specials, Made in Taiwan, Premium, Craze, Cheesecake Series, Muscovado Boba Series, Fruit Tea, Coffee as well as other drinks. They also have some munchies if you’re hungry.

We got the following: Tea Bar Classic Milk Tea (House Special R: PHP80 | L: PHP95), Roasted Oolong Milk Tea (Made in Taiwan R: PHP90 | L: PHP105), Blueberry Cheesecake Milk Tea (Cheesecake Series R: PHP130 | L: PHP145), Muscovado Boba Milk Tea (Muscovado Boba Series R: PHP110 | L: PHP130) and Bacon & Cheese Sandwich (PHP149).

Their milk teas are familiar but good. The pearls were cooked well making the milk tea drinking experience even better. Their Bacon & Cheese Sandwich was also delicious. But since they ran out of bagels, they used croissant which I think made it much better.

My cousins enjoyed the quick trip to TEA + BAR and if they ask me to visit it with them again, I would be happy to.
