His sister returns to her side of the war, and he to his. He strides through the town square, unseen but for the dead. They're a comfort, and he can't help but show off a little for them. Every time he's allowed himself to be seen recently, it's not gone the way he hoped.

The seer is here again. Moving in circles, he skitters and follows a path that makes little sense. He's foretelling the past, perhaps, or replaying the future. He's curious about the seer, interested in where this might go. But he has something to drop off, first. Hidden in the most unlikely of places where it will be safe.

He presses his finger to the centre of the seer's forehead. The seer freezes, locked in place. He returns his mask to the cafe, checking over his shoulder. His power is weak here without the sun, but his seer is still where he left him. He touches the waitress, squeezes her shoulders. She inhales deeply, but she does not see him. She does not feel him. He returns outside.

When he touches the seer for the second time, he is able to tap into the power held within him. Prophecy always was his talent, and muse for the artists. He pulls the seer along with him, he offers him more.

Too much, perhaps, as he stumbles to the floor.

He crawls into the shadows, back in the company only of his dead. He finds a ledge out of the way to rest and compose himself.

And then he sees her.

Foretelling the past, or replaying the future. His rest is done. He must know her.

Again.

We are lying on the floor of the Klub. Somehow, Kampe has convinced us all to lie flat on our backs on the sticky, creaky floor of the Klub, right on the minotaur drawing. Which was spattered in stage blood about 15 minutes ago.

Somehow, Kampe has communicated all manner of instructions to us, wordlessly, and somehow we followed every one of their orders. We became a fountain for Apollo, we became a wiggly bridge under which they crawled to greet Polyxena.

Now, they have us all lying on the floor.

They duck behind the bar and emerge with a spray bottle. Spritz spritz, straight up into the light, and we are doused in water droplets. We all collapse into a fit of giggles.

After cooling off, Kampe pulls us up, one by one, and then they take their place in the centre of the Klub, as the curtain opens to reveal Polydorus.

THE HOUHANSHU says, “What Lao-tzu warns against is ‘pouring in more’” (see the Houhanshu’s Lao-tzu biography).

HSUN-TZU says, “In the ancestral hall of Duke Huan, Confucius reports watching an attendant pour water into a container that hung at an angle. As the water level approached the midpoint, the container became upright. But when the attendant went beyond the midpoint, it tipped over, the water poured out, and only after it was empty did it resume its former position. Seeing this, Confucius sighed, ‘Alas! Whatever becomes full becomes empty’” (Hsuntzu: 28).

LU TUNG-PIN says, “This verse is about the basics of cultivation. These are the obstacles when you first enter the gate.”

LIU SHIH-LI says, “Since fullness always leads to emptiness, avoid satisfaction. Since sharpness always leads to dullness, avoid zeal. Since gold and jade always lead to worry, avoid greed. Since wealth and honor encourage excess, avoid pride. Since success and fame bring danger, know when to stop and where lies the mean. You don’t have to live in the mountains and forests or cut yourself off from human affairs to enter the Way. Success and fame, wealth and honor are all encouragements to practice.”

YEN TSUN says, “To succeed without being vain is easy to say but hard to practice. When success is combined with pride, it’s like lighting a torch. The brighter it burns, the quicker it burns out.”

WANG CHEN says, “To retire doesn’t mean to abdicate your position. Rather, when your task is done, treat it as though it were nothing.”

SSU-MA CH’IEN says, “When Confucius asked about the ceremonies of the ancients, Lao-tzu said, ‘I have heard that the clever merchant hides his wealth so his store looks empty and that the superior man acts dumb to avoid calling attention to himself. I advise you to get rid of your excessive pride and ambition. They won’t do you any good. This is all I have to say to you’” (Shihchi: 63).

HO-SHANG KUNG says, “Excessive wealth and desire wearies and harms the spirit. The rich should help the poor, and the powerful should aid the oppressed. If, instead, they flaunt their riches and power, they are sure to suffer disaster. Once the sun reaches the zenith, it descends. Once the moon becomes full, it wanes. Creatures flourish then wither. Joy turns to sorrow. When your work is done, if you do not step down, you will meet with harm. This is the way of Heaven.”

HUANG YUAN-CHI says, “You need a raft to cross a river. But once across, you can forget the raft. You need to study rules to learn how to do something. But once you know how, you can forget the rules.”

And RED PINE adds, “This recipe for long life has been repeated in every civilized culture, and yet it has forever fallen on deaf ears.”

It seems so basic. Yet, we ignore Lao-tzu’s sage advice at our own peril. And, ignore it, we do. As Red Pine says in his own commentary on today’s verse, “This recipe for long life has been repeated in every civilized culture, and yet it has forever fallen on deaf ears.” Why is that?

I think it is quite clear. And we have been talking about it for days, now. The way of Humankind runs counter to the Way of the Tao.

We always want more. Surely, I can add just a little more. “Whoa there,” says Lao-tzu. “Better stop while you can.” “While you can” implies you can reach a point where you can’t stop. I think for some of us, it happens a whole lot sooner than we might think.

Rooms full of treasure. What a measure of the vanity of success! But those rooms will never be safe. Humankind’s vanity invites its own failure.

So, what is to be done? It is simple, really. Like I said, at the beginning of my commentary, it is basic. Just do your work, then stop.

As we said in yesterday’s verse, do your work with skill. Do your very best. But when it is done, treat it as if it were nothing. Let it go. Let it be. Don’t be attached to it. Don’t keep pouring. That vessel will only hold so much. Don’t keep sharpening. You only hasten it getting dull again.

Things flourish for a time, and then they die. Remember what Lao-tzu said, in yesterday’s verse, about moving with time? Don’t rush it. And don’t try to hold on to it. This is the Way!

Day 20: Fav Pairing or Crack Pairing - Continued.

I decided that I needed to do this in two parts. One for my favourite pairing, and one for my favourite crack pairing, because both are delightfully interesting questions.

There were so many incredible characters in The Burnt City. Twenty-eight of them, to be precise. Thirty, if you included The Furies as characters, which I did. For me, their interactions with each other was what made them fascinating. I loved their solo time, but my heart swelled each time they interacted with another character, even if only for a moment.

Askalaphos leaning through the window to hug Zagreus after he finds him safe after the invasion, the uneasy but immediate understanding between the Oracle and Cassandra. The Watchman coming face to face with Aegisthus at the border hut. There were entire stories in these brief moments. Histories we never got to see, and futures that continued beyond the confines of their loops, only seen in our imaginations.

I think my favourite of these is Kronos and Kampe.

These two characters are so wreathed in chaos and darkness. It makes their momentary glimpses of friendship or understanding all the more poignant.

I was following Milton Lopes' Kronos a few days before the final show, loop 1, so I could see the open scene in the bedroom instead of the mid-loop 1:1. He's just sat down at the mirrors, we're all packed into the room around him, and without warning, Pin Chieh Chen's Kampe comes slithering around the legs of the audience into the room. They stood, they showed each other their reflections, showing them for the monsters they had become, they had a supremely lovely and platonically intimate moment before Kampe left him alone again.

I think what I loved most about it was that it was never romantic. It was constantly changing, even within the same loops, but there was never the unrequited or past love view of it, no matter the pairing. And I needed that in a show that is hyped on sex and tragic love.

Their sometimes playful, sometimes cold and calculating, cooperation in Klub as Kronos demands Polydorus as the next sacrifice. Their stand-off curiosity of each other when they meet unexpectedly. Kronos quietly watching Kampe on the benches in the Tenement Square. It was all so rich in hidden story that could be taken in a hundred different ways.

Created by Bito, this opening video explores the creative process of finding inspiration in the huaren cultural and philosophical context. A journey searching for boundless and limitless inspiration with a golden pinball roaming across different design categories and materials.

We are honored to be part of Golden Pin Design Award 2016. As a leading visual design team for this ceremony, we felt proud and would say it out loud to bring this Huaren-style opening video into deeper and more profound vision of motion design.
