Just to share a watercolour I complete last week of The Hive at 52, a beautiful period guest house neighbouring our property. Good god, is it warm and 💦 humid! *ug* But the rhododendrons look great for now. Tomorrow it's supposed to be around 90°, so that may take the flowers out.

Second bloom

There are over 1000 species of Rhododendron (not including 28000 cultivars) and the vast majority of rhodos are native to the Himalayan mountains. They typically bloom in the spring but they sometimes produce a few flowers at this time of year in reaction to sudden temperature changes. That being said, it's a bit unusual to see one in full bloom in October.

I'm told that this is common in some Himalayan species and a number of cultivars have been developed to reliably flower in the spring and the fall. Rhododendron grow very well in the Pacific Northwest and we even have a few of our own native species. I have six rhodos in my garden. All of them are forming flower buds for next spring but none of them look like this. Running into a beautiful Rhododendron in full-blown second bloom was a wonderful surprise.
