Sargasso Moon, Newleaf (#1)

As Pitchpaw is apprenticed to Snailstripe, she hopes that she'll get to do something that will impress the clan as her first day as an apprentice. Such excitement in her young mind causes her to make some... irrational decisions. She and Bluepaw run off in the direction of the Coverclan border, eager to prove themselves. Pitchpaw returns with a torn ear and a tummy ache. Bluepaw returns with a migraine.

Scorchtrail finds a kittypet loitering near the Poolclan-Coverclan border. He calmly introduces himself as Neptune, explaining that his twolegs disappeared one day and never returned. He is brought back to the clan and offered a place to stay, as well as a new name: Neptunetwist.

The apprentices are eager to meet Neptunetwist, and gather up items to formally introduce him to Poolclan. However, Barnaclepaw starts a fight with Pitchpaw during the process.

A small dog gets loose near some of the tall rocks, leaving Chitonchaser and Sculpinspots to herd it away. All they do is excite it more, and are forced to scale the rocks and wait, exasperated, for the mongrel's twolegs to take it home.

Chitonchaser informs the clan's healer, Ochreears, that she had a vision while hunting by herself along the shore. They discuss it together. After a long walk, they depart, frustrated from being unable to divine the vision's vague meaning.

Steps from behind almost had Chasmmoor jumping out of his fur. To his relief, it was what seemed like his closest friend.

Chasmmoor laughed. “Hey buddy! Just cleaning up.” He gestured to the blood on his paws. “That buzzard was really a tough one. But he was all skin and bones once I got the drop on him! It’s been a long day, but a good one.”

He lost his smile once he took another look at the rabbit.

“Who?”

“I know he abandoned his kits, yeah, but can we please wait until tomorrow?”

Fogcrawl gives Pitchpaw a friendly nudge when the leader calls the young cat's name. They watch with pride as Pitchpaw steps forward to receive their new name, Pitchmouse, and are honored for their leadership

Deino is watching with pride is Ibispaw is named and given to Barleyquiver to apprentice under. They know Barleyquiver was a good choice

While searching for some specific herbs Deino is startled by weird sounds and whispers on the wind. The sounds die away and start up again in strange, unpredictable intervals. investigating, Deino suddenly finds a panting, bleeding queen desperately trying to keep their newborns quiet. Deino brings the queen back to camp where the Clan can assist

Two groups of cats faced each other in the Tideclan Warriors den, neither moving a muscle.

Larch stood at the front of the group of Infernoclan cats, though his posture was awry, and his tail slumped against the ground. Blood trickled from a deep wound on the right side of his neck. “We ... can keep fighting all day ... if we have to.” He growled lowly.

“Relax, Larch.” The oddly pale tom -- Archie -- spoke up, his voice smooth. “Don’t push yourself any harder, you’re about ready to keel over as is.”

Larch turned his head in the white tom’s direction and hissed in annoyance, though he backed away, sitting heavily on his haunches.

“You made a grave mistake, trying to corner us ... you’ll see what a true Tideclan warrior’s claws feel like!” Riverblaze spat, advancing forward with his pelt and tail spiked, making the grey tom appear twice his size. Pitchpaw -- a siamese tom -- and Larch scrambled backwards toward the entrance of the den as he approached, glancing fearfully at their other two clanmates. Larkshine leapt forward, landing directly in front of Pitchpaw and letting out a furious hiss. The brown tom startled and fell backwards, then shot through the bush, Larch hot on his tail as they fled.

Archie and Autumnpaw -- a red and white tabby mollie -- glanced at each other with uncertainty. More of the Tideclan cats closed in around them, but before they could be cornered, the two turned tail and ran for the camp exit.

Falconblaze coughed, sitting down stiffly. The older tom’s wounds were deep. “Foxhearts, attacking us in our own camp while we sleep. Who do they think they are ...?” He coughed again, and settled down on the ground with all four paws underneath himself.

“We need to find Flowerscar and Barkbriar. No doubt there’s going to be a lot of wounds to treat.” Wrencharm sighed, shaking his head in irritation and sending droplets of blood across the ground.

Tysm! One of the main reasons I decided to make this blog was so I could share the story that my brain started creating when I made this clan, because I love seeing people’s reactions and watching y’all become invested in what happens to them!

Treestar has been following the progress of Charredpaw for moons, and feels that it is finally time for them to get their warrior name. They are granted the name Charredpad in honor of their dignity

Silkmimic can hardly believe how quickly time has passed since Bitepaw was a kit. It still feels like just yesterday that they were tumbling around the nursery, chasing after a moss-ball or some other cat's tail. Misty-eyed with pride and joy, Silkmimic throws their head back and tries to cheer the loudest as Bitepaw is named Biteflow and honored for their empathy.

Shadowpaw sits in front of the Clan, eager to receive their name, but their focus seems somewhere else, somewhere beyond the horizon. They barely seem to be paying attention as they're named Shadowgoat after their valiance

Agaveshimmer is hunting with Pitchpaw when Agaveshimmer goes down hard in a misjudged pounce and sprained their paw

Tremblemask sees two kits from LionClan playing close to the border. As Tremblemask crosses the border with Sparrowhollow to grab the kits by their scruff, a LionClan patrol suddenly appears, looking furious, with their claws out and fangs bared! Sparrowhollow gently drops the kit and attempts to explain the situation but is immediately and viciously killed. Tremblemask races back over to their side of the border, just barely escaping the wrath of LionClan warriors

The patrol spots a small dog on the border. The dog gets a lucky hit on Roarweb, though together all the cats are still able to drive it off

Not enough medicine cats I turned off unknown second parent temporarily cause I cannot handle how many cats are in this Clan right now. I stopped reading the relationships and am praying for a mass extinction The hostile environment between PikaClan and SplinterClan has been continuing to grow

Patrols

Chestnutpaw is dragging behind the patrol when they suddenly hear a tumble of rocks and become trapped. Even though Chestnutpaw made it out, they swear someone pushed them, and blame Andrew. Andrew denies it and says they should get Chestnutpaw back to camp to get their injury looked at.

The patrol reaches a river that must be crossed to ensure the borders are thoroughly checked (proceed) After some consideration the patrol finds a place to cross. They reach about halways as a strong rush of water crashes over them. The water mercilessly crashes them against the river's sharp boulders and violently sends them careening over a small waterfall. Thankfully, at the bottom the water is calmer and they wash up on the riverbed, but not without consequence from trying to fight one of nature's strongest forces.

Starlingholly finds an abandoned kit whose parents are nowhere to be found. She rushes them back to camp and they are nursed back to health and promised a place in the Clan

Quietkit (male) joins the Clan at 3 moons old. He was adopted by Starlingholly and Roarweb (I had to do this manually but I want it)

The patrol comes across a large dog on the border. The patrol fights bravely, but you only need to be unlucky once. Hawkrain gets taken out of the fight with one snap of the beast's huge jaws. The rest of the patrol rallies to defend them, and Hawkrain is safely helped back to camp, where the medicine den awaits

Story: 

He was a Half-Clan kit, which of course put some contempt onto his existence. His mother got together with a loner, and didn’t bother hiding it. She was the kind that was unapologetic about that kind of stuff. It was her own life, and that. What would the leader do? Throw out a perfectly good warrior carrying a future perfectly good warrior?

In spite of the stares and comments, most didn’t take their dislike of the situation over the kit. There were even a few of the warriors that chose to play with him out of sympathy, or perhaps wanting to show their Clanmates that he was just like the rest of them.

Pitchkit felt cared for enough to love his Clan, and rejected enough to feel a need to prove himself more than the other kits.

Sootfang, one of the warriors who often played with him, and who became his mentor. He supported Pitchpaw’s resolve to work as hard as he could, reminding him every now and again to take a break.

Pitchpaw was about to change the elder’s bedding when he overhead them discussing him, saying how with his loner blood, he would run away at the first sign of danger, among other heartbreaking things.

He ran off into the woods until his legs were too tired to move anymore. Sootfang caught up with him, leading to a long, heart-to-heart. Sootfang revealed that he, too, was Half-Clan. In fact, hardly Clan at all, according to what they said when he was Pitchpaw’s age. His mother was a loner who became sick while expectant with him, and sought out the Clan’s aid. She died shortly after he was born, and the Clan took him in.

Pitchpaw had been shocked, and part of him felt broken to now the Clan he loved could be so cruel to those who were different. The other part felt warm and comforted, knowing he wasn’t alone and that there were those that did love him in spite of knowing his origin.

In addition, Sootfang was now one of the most respected cats in the Clan because of how hard he worked and trained. Pitchpaw’s resolve returned. He would do it too.

And he was rewarded. He became respected, admired, deputy.

The bitter hurt of early rejection was forever present, but distant now, as though it had happened to someone else. He truly did love his Clan, every warrior and every piece of territory it protected. He was reasonably angry when Riverclan threatened war. 

They were in a drought and needed more territory for food, but the territory they wanted was home to medicine Shadowclan needed, with five of its warriors sick.

Shadowclan could not afford a battle right now. It was stretching itself weak as it was, with warriors needing to go out, in, and right back out on patrols. Everyone was either too sick or too tired. There was no way the battle could not result in serious injury, possibly even death.

They needed to be scared off, but how?

The first time wasn’t calculated, a slip of anger. A Riverclan warrior was taunting him and his patrol. They got into a fight with one of his younger warriors. He was hurting them. In an attempt to separate them, Pitchfang had accidently snapped the Riverclanner’s neck.

The patrol was in panic, but Pitchfang felt oddly calm. He stared at the body as solutions fit together in his mind like a puzzle, becoming clearer and clearer.

He made the patrol calm down. Then he ordered them to help him carry the body. They weren’t exactly eager to do so, but Pitchfang managed to convince them. 

Riverclan needed to now what Shadowclan was capable of. Anyone could kill a lone warrior at the border. Only a truly dangerous warrior could bring the body right to its camp!

The warriors still weren’t eager, but Pitchfang made a good case. They couldn’t revive the dead, the least they could do was make sure his death was not in vain, and that no one else would have to die in the Riverclan-Shadowclan feud. 

Even though he expected it, Pitchfang couldn’t help but feel surprised that it had worked. Riverclan had suddenly stopped their threats, even patrolling the Shadowclan border.

The cats kept quiet. No one else knew why Riverclan stopped their threats, but they wouldn’t question it.

One of the warriors, Cedarnose came close to caving in after the next gathering, where Riverclan announced the cat, Shellfrost, would be greatly missed by his friends and family. It made it too real for them, to know that the cat they dragged was someone who would be missed.

Pitchfang made him ponder what was worse, someone you don’t know dying and knowing their family, who you also don’t know or see, are mourning, or have your own beloved Clanmates die and have the Clanmates you do know and care about mourn? 

It had to be done.

It would be done again.

Twice again, he killed warriors who wandered alone by the borders. Elmbreeze, who was one of many Thunderclan perpetrators stealing prey from Shadowclan during leaf-bare, passing the strip of land that belonged to Skyclan. And Gingerwhisker of said Skyclan, who was padding too close for comfort to the border.

It was the third one that was the final straw for Cedarnose. Maybe Elmbreeze and Shellfrost’s deaths could be justified-- although he still felt guilty for both-- but Gingerwhisker hadn’t even passed the border!

Pitchfang was more than enraged when Cedarnose told him that he would tell everyone. He chased him through the trees, zigzagging, running into unfamiliar territory, passing dense bush, and down a steep fall.

Additional Information:

--Cedarnose deliberately lead him to the cliff, turning sometime in the bushes.

--Although cats don’t exactly have fall damage, the fall itself had a bunch of jagged rocks on the way down.
