Well, let me tell you 'bout the way she looked
The way she'd act and the color of her hair
Her voice was soft and cool
Her eyes were clear and bright
But she's not there.

Mark of Cain || Eli Sunday x gn!reader
Word count: 1921
Summary: You follow Eli to the bathhouse the night that he was dragged through the mud
Warnings: SMUT, hand job, sad(ish) ending, some feet, dubious consent, gender-neutral reader (gender unspecified)
A/N: I’m still finding my footing with tumblr so please excuse my formatting mistakes. You can also find this fic on my ao3 — I wrote it a while ago.
At first you didn’t realize it was him. Caked in mud (why hadn’t he washed yet?), walking briskly — spectacle for your eyes only. It was past dinner time. All the lamplights at the camp were out except for yours. You decided to stay up later and work on your knitting. Mosquitos nipped at your skin. Your face was dry and red from the cold wind. When you woke up that day, you coughed up a loogie colored bright red. The dryness had gotten to the sinuses of you and all the people living with you. The husky voices of the men around were the only good to come of the weather.
So, you took a swig of bathtub moonshine that one stranger-neighbor had gifted your father. It tasted no better than rubbing alcohol, but it did the job — to keep you inebriated, to keep your confidence. Eli Sunday was on a mission based on the straight fast track he took. He didn’t notice you when he walked by. You hoped he would.
Even in his least dignified and most depressed state, Eli Sunday had a sort of boyish charm to him. He was kind, gentlemanly, and as your father had put it “a dapper and respectable young preacher”. During sermon he was commanding, erratic even, and you were ashamed to say that it excited you. He had a presence in Little Boston, and he knew it. His presence was larger than Daniel Plainview’s (who, as of today, you despised).
You started talking to him the day you were dragged into town by your family. All the “Your ranch is lovely”s and “beautiful sermon”s and “you truly are a healer”s in the world were not enough to push you into Eli’s personal life. You wanted him, fully, and flirting does not quite come across while in a house of God. Eli was either oblivious to your advances or politely declining them.
You fantasized that he would accept your advances. He’d profess his love for you, kiss you with gusto in the pouring rain (weather in which you hadn’t seen once around here; California summers were the cruelest), take you on excursions and teach you his ways. You’d get hitched, consummate your marriage (the part you thought about most while laying out behind your tent in the middle of the night with your hand shoved down your underwear and the other over your mouth, sweating, panting, cursing yourself for your sins: “ I’m going to Hell, I’m going to burn in Hell”; worse yet when you’d wipe your dripping fingers on the blanket underneath you like a Scarlet letter only you could see). You were determined to have Eli fully, as unlikely as your fantasy is. You’d be willing to give up everything for the boy, do anything.
You stood up and set your knitting down, feeling suddenly compelled to see Eli now. Why was he the only other one up? Why, pray tell, hadn’t he washed the dirt off his face? It struck you suddenly that that’s just what he was doing. The bathhouse was in the direction he was headed, and unless he wanted to be scraped and pricked by shrubs and paddle cactuses, he was going to wash up.
You found yourself following him without a thought. Wandering after him like he was an apparition, a vision in one of those dime-store novel. Your shoes crunched on the dry landscape and you couldn’t help but shake the feeling that you’d break your ankle by rolling it on a loose rock or crack. Damn you for not bringing your lamp.
A soft orange glow leaked through the cracks of the ramshackle bathhouse— a stark contrast to the blank, black sky. You could hear the furnace roaring and some fumbling about. Holding your breath, you padded to the entrance and creaked the door open ever so slightly. You could see Eli struggling to pour in the last of the water into the tub. He then grabbed a rag and soap and set it on a stool next to his bath, along with a raggedy old towel. Humble to use such a dingy old thing, you thought. He looked in your direction, but he couldn’t see you in the dark of the night. He slipped off his clothes and you watched excitedly at the milky white skin that was revealed to you. It was funny to think he was so pale while living in such a blistering climate. He sank into the bath. You felt a rush of excitement reach your groin area. Hell, you thought, he’d figure it out eventually. You didn’t come here only to spy.
After taking a deep (and mostly quiet) breath, you stood up. You wasted no time in creaking the door open. Eli startles.
“Mr. Sunday,” you greet him, “how awful.”
He sat there, looking up at you with bewilderment drawn across his dirty face. He tried and failed to cover his body. The murky bath water was enough to cover most of him, however. “Awful?” he asked with a furrowed brow.
“The beating you took,” you said. “Such a crook, that Mr. Plainview. He really turned the town — your ranch — upside down.”
A shadow crossed his face at the mention of Daniel and the beating. “Your family is working for him. I wouldn’t be saying that.”
You kneeled next to the tub. Eli’s eyes shifted uncomfortably “I mean every word. Swear to God. I hate that man more than you do.”
Eli looked like he was about to scold you, but held back. “What makes you think you hate him?”
“He did this to you,” you touch his shoulder gently.
“He did,” he said gravely, with an air of finality. “What is it that you need, child?”
“I want to help you feel better, sir. You’ve had such a rough day. Let me scrub you clean.”
“I… think that’s far too intimate, don’t you?”
“Washing and grooming one another is the most honorable form of servitude,” you totally pulled that out of your ass. “it’s what my grandmother always told me. Just relax, Eli.”
He nodded, giving in to your incessant pleas. You could see by his body language that he was in a far more vulnerable place than he was necessarily comfortable with. You chastised yourself for taking advantage of him right then, but argued it was your only chance.
You start by dipping his head into the water, which he lets you do gratefully. You use his rag to gently wipe the crusted mud and oil off of his face. Then, lather soap in your hands to wash his hair. He groans, pleased with the way you massage his filthy scalp.
“Thank you,” he said hoarsely. “It’s been hard.”
“I know,” you said, and moved his head to your chest in a semi hug; part of your parental instinct. He nuzzled into you, and gripped one of your arms in both hands. You pushed him back after a short moment. His breathing seemed labored and his eyes tear filled, but he didn’t let himself cry. A pale brownish wet spot covered the breast of your night clothes.
You massaged his shoulders, then started washing his torso. Your fingers grazed across his soft pink nipples and he tensed, but didn’t say anything. He lifted his arms when he needed to be washed, behaving like an obedient child.
You skipped his groin for the time being, not wanting to make Eli uncomfortable before you could get him fully clean. You focused on his legs, and made your way down his thighs and to his ankles dutifully. You didn’t look at his face all the while, much like a nurse wouldn’t stare when giving a sponge bath.
When you reached his feet though, you finally looked in his eyes. You knew the wedding tradition. This, the most intimate form of servitude. Eli met your eyes then, and you smiled sweetly. You scrubbed at his feet gently, feeling their callouses, their swollen redness. He really was a hardworking man, if you could tell anything by his feet. You spend an extra moment massaging them. He pulls back a little and you let go.
He blushed when he said, “I’m a little ticklish.”
You nod and scoot to his side. You lather your hands again and reach down to wash the areas you haven’t washed yet. Eli let you caress his hips, and when you inch your hand down his happy trail he only flinched slightly. You trail your fingers down slowly and watch Eli’s temple (his chin is to his chest now, avoiding eye contact still). He jolts when your fingers brush his flaccid penis.
“W- what are you doing?” he half-yelped.
“Just washing you,” you chided as if he was wrong to say anything. “It’s okay.”
“Okay,” he breathed out gently. He closed his eyes. He looked so peaceful compared to when you first came into the bathhouse. You palmed his cock gently, then formed a circle with your hand and started loosely jerking it. Eli opened his eyes.
“I — I can’t do this,” he said, looking panicked again. “I’m a holy man.”
You let go of him and placed your hand at the edge of the tub.“Ministers don’t have to abstain, you know,” you said. Finally having acknowledged what you were doing formed a rush of butterflies in your gut.
“Premarital sex is a sin.”
“Who said anything about sex? I’m just relieving your stress.”
“Are you an escort?” Eli asked. It was hard to tell if he was being genuine. You brushed him off with a scoff. You reach down to touch him again, undeterred. This time he said nothing, just allowed you to toy with him while his half-hard cock stiffened. Eli sighed shakily. His hands gripped the edge of the tub and he stared straight at the wall across from him. Your chest tightened at the sorrowful look gracing his face. You stop touching him again.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded. “Please keep going.”
You did as he said and got to work stroking his now fully erect cock. He gasped and huffed, mewled when you touched his sensitive tip. He was practically purring from the inexperienced palm that was grasping him. You kissed his temple and nuzzled his forehead as you worked your hand back and forth. The spastic motion of Eli’s hips drove you forward, and a deep throbbing warmth spread at your crotch. You whispered nonsense into his hair, a litany of curses and his own name, at one point a barely audible iloveyou.
Before you could register, Eli was cumming. Spurts of semen clouded the water, and, slightly disgusted, you pulled your arm out. Eli had his head tilted back. His face was red and sweaty. His nose, which you had a perfect underside view of, flared as he tried to catch his breath. You’re slightly disappointed you didn’t get to see his face when he came, but the troubled look on his face brought the shame of the act back to earth at full force.
“Eli?” You asked timidly. The confidence you somehow mustered earlier was all gone. Any semblance of arousal had gone out the door the second you started to doubt yourself.
“I’m irredeemable,” he breathed, “get out. Go back to camp.”
“Eli, I’m —,”
“Go. You can still be saved.”
You stood. His gaze lingered on the brownish spot on your pajamas. “I’m dirtier than I’ve ever been,” he said to your chest.

1. Ginuwine: Best known for his 1996 single “Pony,” Ginuwine’s smooth R&B vocals have been making fans melt for more than two decades. His last proper solo album, 2011’s ‘Elgin,’ was his fifth album to crack the top 10 on the Billboard R&B chart. Catch him tonight as he gives you all those sweet 90s feels. Shae Williams and DJ Prince Hakim will be opening the show. (Friday, Sony Hall)
2. Justin Willman: Part comedian part magician, Justin Willman’s work is phenomenal. The way he presents his ideas will leave you in stitches as he blows your mind with his simple but astounding illusions. Willman brings his Fake Believe tour to New York for five shows this weekend. (Friday - Sunday, Caroline’s on Broadway)
3. Global Citizen Festival: Bringing attention to the issue of extreme poverty, Global Citizen aims to get people involved in exacting change. This year’s festival will include performances from Janet Jackson, The Weeknd, Shawn Mendez, Cardi B, Janelle Monae and John Legend, who will be raising awareness during their sets. Ticketing for the festival is over, however the event is being aired on MSNBC, nbcnews.com and iHeartRadio. (Saturday, Central Park)
4. Jimmy G Benefit: Murphy’s Law frontman Jimmy Gestapo went through gallbladder surgery earlier this year, which found the singer facing high medical bills. The band has been trying to raise money for him ever since. The latest effort comes in the form of a benefit show happening in Tompkins Square Park this weekend. Headlining the show is ska-punk stalwart the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, along with opening sets from Sheer Terror, Killing Time, Combust and some special guests. (Saturday, Tompkins Square Park)
5. Boris: Japanese rockers Boris recently celebrated their 25th anniversary together, releasing a brand new album, ‘Dear,’ to mark the occasion. With a larger-than-life stage show and a sound that appeals to fans of both heavy rock and experimental, these guys are not one to miss. The band plays a small one-off show in Brooklyn this weekend. (Saturday, Schimanski)
6. Chance the Rapper: Chance the Rapper has been having a real breakthrough over the past few years. His debut album, 2016’s ‘Coloring Book,’ earned three Grammys, making it the first streaming-only album to receive the award. Since then, the artist has been doing a lot of good with his newfound fame, including donating to the Chicago Public Schools. Chance hits New York for a special show sponsored by Spotify’s RapCaviar. The show also features up-and-comers Sheck Wes, Tierra Whack and DJ SpinKing. (Saturday, Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island)
7. Brooklyn Comes Alive: The fourth-annual Brooklyn Comes Alive festival will be taking place this weekend, bringing together more than 50 musicians of varying genres for a bit of musical experimentation. Included in the mix are tributes to Prince, Gregg Allman, Steely Dan and more, as well as instant jam sessions leading to once-in-a-lifetime collaborations. Festival goers will have in-and-out access to all three venues involved. (Saturday, Brooklyn Bowl / Music Hall of Williamsburg / Rough Trade)
8. There’s No Leaving New York Festival: The National are throwing a two day festival in Queens this weekend to close out Forest Hills Stadium’s 2018 concert season. Saturday festival goers will have the chance to see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Phoebe Bridgers, Cigarettes After Sex and Adia Victoria, while Sunday attendees will be treated to sets from Future Islands, Cat Power U.S. Girls and Bully. The National headline both nights. (Saturday & Sunday, Forest Hills Stadium)
9. Dokken: Classic metal band Dokken is reportedly heading back into the studio to record their first album in six years. Current guitarist Jon Levin told AllThatShreds.com (as reported by Blabbermouth.net) that the new music will have that “classic Dokken sound” fans have come to love. Hear all the old tunes one more time when the band’s fall tour hits Long Island this weekend. (Sunday, Mulcahy’s)
10. Pete Yorn: Earlier this year, singer/songwriter Pete Yorn and actress Scarlet Johansen reunited for a new collaborative EP, ‘Apart,’ their first together in nine years. Whether he tackles any of those songs or strictly sticks to the hits of his solo repertoire during his current east coast acoustic tour, which kicked off this week, remains to be seen. (Sunday, Gramercy Theatre)
11. Billy Joel: Long Island’s prodigal son returns for a record-breaking 102nd show at Madison Square Garden this weekend, the 56th of his monthly residency. The show is once again sold out, though you can count on Joel performing shows there through December, as well as a special New Year’s Eve show at Nassau Coliseum. (Sunday, Madison Square Garden)
