I have a completely reinvigorated devotion to native plants after my trip to @argylewinery. Touring their sustainable landscape was frankly inspiring, and I learned a TON from @_sean_hogan about how to create a landscape that uses less water, promotes native bees, and is still romantic and accessible. Thanks to @a.n.l.d_ for planning this event! It was wonderful getting to know designers in this area, people who get excited by the idea of a dwarf cypress and want to know more about the soil it grows in in the wild. Grinnell’s Beardtongue, Penstemon grinnellii. It is endemic to California and found in several mountains ranges. The mouth of the flower has a unique hairy throat and a long haired protruding staminode giving the flower it’s name Beardtongue. This dark purple penstemon of Frazier Mountain area grows in the sagebrush scrub and subalpine forest habitats. It is called Showy Blue Penstemon but shouldn’t it be called Purple? This super rare flower is only found in the sage pinyon juniper woodland habitat in the Mt. Pinos área and is appropriately called Mt Pinos Onion , Allium Howellii. Like all members of this genus, it has a distinct onion smell and was a good plant of Native Americans. This super rare flower is only found in the drainage of Frazier Mountain where there is a bit of moisture in this dry landscape. It’s called Window Pane Phacelia and you have to get down on your hands and knees to really appreciate its unique beauty and tiny size. The petals are cellophane thin and see through - like a window pane, truly amazing and beautiful . It reminded me of those glass wing butterflies I’ve seen in South America. Deerweed - the hillsides at Charmlee Wilderness park are covered in these golden flowers which play an important role in the ecosystems recovery from the fire there 2 years ago. It’s seeds have a thick coating that sometimes only a hot fire can crack for it to grow. It also transfers much need nitrogen, lost through the fire, from the air back into the soil.
