Scenes From My Walk - Female Black-Headed Grosbeak - Individual photos follow the collage. I believe this is a Female Black-headed Grosbeak. After an identification from Merlin I was still confused about the white band on the head so I went to my Sibley Birds West and it did show a white band for a first year female. I haven’t seen one of this species since 2006 or so. It’s always fun to see new birds or birds I haven’t seen in awhile. Spot-billed pelicans are classified as "Near-threatened, " as their numbers have declined in many areas due to habitat loss and human disturbance, and many populations in Southeast Asia are now extinct.

BUT Due to improved protection of this species, their numbers have seen an increase in recent history, and about 13,000 - 18,000 individuals are believed to exist globally. Several protected colonies nesting close to human habitations have become popular tourist attractions, such as the villages of Kokrebellur and Uppalapadu in India. These pelicans once occurred over a wide range in South Asia, but now they only breed in Sri Lanka and southeastern India, and potentially also on the island of Sumatra in western Indonesia.

It was quite a week this past week for fun bird discoveries! First we had the sighting of Julia’s offspring (the mourning doves!) and then there was the sunset visit of thousands of purple martins that came to roost downtown. They’ve come for a brief stopover in the city before heading down to South America where they will spend the winter. While here they enjoy rest and a big bug buffet so that they can gather strength for their 3000 mile journey south. I just love that they chose the one city block (and the building!) where the symphony plays.
