My grandparents used to drive a couple hours north in Illinois to pick cactus. I can’t believe I had to learn how to prepare and cook nopales from strangers on the Internet. 🤦🏻♀️ It was in the mid 1900s so it was a long time ago I guess.

A very welcome visitor that I only get to see during migration times - the White-throated Sparrow, one of the native sparrow species of America. There are several passing through in spring and fall, and I always love watching them. They scratch the floor for food just like the Juncos.

I kept seeing a bird or birds flying back-and-forth to a nest in the backyard. I assumed it was one of the Coopers Hawks that nest in these trees every year. I heard a caw sound and looked closer and saw it appears to be a crow. What I thought was a trick of the light, I now think are actual white patches on the shoulders and underneath it tail feathers. Do crows take over other birds nests? Someone please help me figure this all out.
