Really happy to be in this show that just opened @Deutsches Hygiene-Museum. I’m exhibiting ‘Breathe’ 3 minutes 25 seconds film. Stereo sound, duration 3’35” incorporating plant, tree and human breath recordings. Collaboration with Christopher Ash and David Stalling. The show is called “of plants and people” Works by #karlblossfelt #UrielOrlow and many more. @DHMDresden #plantsandpeople. Global challenges such as the decline in biodiversity and the alarming world food situation compel us to think long and hard about a more deliberate and considerate approach to plants and nature as a whole. www.siobhanmcdonald.com https://www.dhmd.de/en/exhibitions/of-plants-and-people/. #siobhánmcdonald Www.siobhanmcdonald.com @taylorgalleries @trinitycollegedublin https://www.instagram.com/p/BwordHRHos1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=z0kzg8vvf0ad

Hi, just taking a second to snuggle my plants ☺️🪴 This is my stephania nova and she’s decided to show off this summer and grow these amazing large leaves! I keep her in bright light with some direct light in the afternoon. She seems to like the heat and the occasional humidity I provide. I water her weekly during her active growing season and when the leaves die off and if the bulb goes dormant. I skip watering during that time until I start to see signs that she’s ready to start making new leaves 🍃 again! :: #apartmentbotanist #stephanianova #snuggleplants #nyc #nycplants #newyorkcity #apartmentplants #summerplants #planttips #plantmom #plantparenthood #peoplewithplants #botanicalwoman #urbanjunglebloggers #plantsandpeople #urbanjungle #pottery #plantpots (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPY_6Q5gbi-/?utm_medium=tumblr

P L A N T S E E D S, L O V E P E O P L E This year has been the most challenging and rewarding experience I have ever encountered. . My mind (ego) is constantly computing, solving and trying to correct the past, control the present and predict the future. . As we approach Christmas and the New Year, it’s important for me to hold positive mantras and mindfulness in my heart. . In the midst of creating this series, which is partially completed, the mantra that I hold in my heart and mind is PLANT SEEDS, LOVE PEOPLE. . If we could hold fast to sowing seeds of faith and loving ourselves first and others, ALL WILL BE WELL. . Happy Holidays everyone!!! . #zehaus #peopleandplants #plantsandpeople #caribbeanart #caribbeanartist #tropicalart #tropicalartwork #blackart #blackartwork #portraitpainting #portraitart #portraitart #colorfulart #colorfulartwork #botanicalillustration #botanicalpainting #botanicalartist #floralart #floralpainting #colorfulpainting #tropicalplants #society6artist #society6shop #spoonflowermaker #spoonflowermakers #blackartist #blackinteriordesigner #interiordesigner #homedecor #artanddecor (at Ze Haus Interior Design Studio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJLwrEgH5xD/?igshid=1mopvrcfxaalf

☠️This is my succulent grave yard. ☠️ I put the ones I’m killing and can’t figure out how to care for in here. It sits on the porch with lots of sun and has only been watered by me twice this summer. Other than that I leave it to nature. Surprisingly, lots of them are thriving from when they were first put in this pot. Others have turned to dust 😂! Darn succulents, they sure do keep you on your toes. . ☠️ . ✌🏼 . 🌱 . ☀️ . ☠️ . #plantsonmymind #plants #succulents #succs #plantsofinstagram #plantsplantsplants #succulentsofinstagram #succulentlovehate #lovehate #varietysucculents #plantlover #plantlady #crazyplantlady #crazyplantpeople #peopleandplants #plantsandpeople https://www.instagram.com/p/CBwgigepzO9/?igshid=1cozgwjcdm6m9

Our sacred tobacco plant. #Repost @empresskarenmrose with @get_repost ・・・ Sitting here touching on this tobacco leaf with my free black hands fills me with ancestral memories. Tobacco native to the Americas used and planted by indigenous people became a cash crop that enriched plantation owners and expanded the slave trade all across the South and into the West Indies particularly Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados. My ancestors...slaves in the Caribbean grew tobacco for their owners. Tobacco also became their medicine. These plants histories are layered much like the history of the people who together they ensured each other’s survival. How could we teach plants and not teach the real history as it’s connected to people....get outta here!! . . . #decolonizeherbalism #decolonizeherbalmedicine #tellthetruth #plantsandpeople #herbaleducation #tobacco #sacredvibesapothecary #nycspiritualherbalismconference #ancestralmedicine #slavelabor #slavemedicine #medicineofslaves https://www.instagram.com/p/BowWhBZn5u3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=e9ppp6dztfvq

I love food and honestly, I don’t think you could find a single person on this earth that does not love food in some way.  Some of my favorite things include cheesecake, steak, and French fries.  Being the foodie that I am I often spend a fair bit of time watching the Food Network and about 5 year ago now I came across a new show called “The 100 Mile Challenge” and little did I know this show had stemmed from the very book I was required to read for my final Plants and People blog entry.  I will admit now that I did not have the chance to read this book yet I still feel connected to the concept through my explorations with the Food Network.  The premise being that you only eat local foods that can be sourced within a 100 mile radius.  The show itself was a result of the bestselling book entitled “The 100-Mile Diet” by Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon who decided to eat locally for a year.  In the show Mackinnon and Smith recruit the people of Mission BC to challenge themselves to local living for 100 days.  Initially the interests are high but only 5 families complete the challenge.
The point of eating local isn’t just for fun but for the good of the environment.  It makes sense to eat food you can grow in your backyard rather than have it come all the way from China or the states.  Beef, fish, dairy, chicken, fruits, and vegetables can all be sourced locally depending on the time of year.  What becomes difficult is that things such as spices, beer, rum, and coffee are all not local.  This would be a problem for me.  My two favorite alcoholic beverages are not made from local products so I would not be able to indulge in a drink here or there.  NO COFFEE!  ARE YOU CRAZY!  How is someone to survive without coffee?  I think the idea around the 100-diet is great but I don’t think it is realistic for a lot of people.  Living in Kamloops for example would make the diet very difficult.  I am not saying people shouldn’t try, I think people should eat as locally as possible but not limit themselves only to local food.
With that being said, I conclude my Plants and People blogging.  It has been an enlightening journey learning about how much humans rely on plants and how much plants rely on humans.  There are so many things I get to take away from this experience including a much greater appreciation for plants and even a greater appreciation for the creative side of science even if it puts me outside of my comfort zone……………

How far is 100 miles?
Eating food within 100 miles of your home is challenging in a temperate area such as Kamloops, where long, cold winters make outdoor gardens a taboo. It also requires both the knowledge and expertise of how to hunt and garden, or deep enough pockets to afford relatively expensive novelty items from within a 100-mile radius. In a perfect world, eating foods within 100 miles of your home would be the norm as this would help to reduce carbon emissions and make people much healthier.
During the summer, I eat many foods from the garden but less so in the winter months. Each year my mom spreads manure over the garden boxes and my sister, brother, and I help to pull weeds and turn the soil over. When we were little our favorite part was planting the seeds, but now I find enjoyment in things I used to despise such as weeding. I also still enjoy digging up the potatoes when they are large enough to be harvested, as it feels very rewarding. Plants we grow each year include zucchini, squash, peas, tomatoes, potatoes, raspberries, mint, chives, cherry trees, and apple trees. To supplement the fruits and vegetables we grow each year, we grow meat birds, cattle, and lambs. My dad also hunts during the fall and we are always guaranteed wild game meat throughout the following year.
While we harvest what we can during the summer and fall from within 100 miles of our home, we still supplement it with foods bought from the grocery store. Canada is well known for eating foods from around the world; one night we might eat Thai, another Chinese, and another Greek. Along with the wide variety of foods we eat, the vast area of Canada makes it relatively difficult to eat foods within 100 miles. This is less of a challenge for smaller countries in Europe such as Scotland and England. While I would like to attempt to strictly eat foods from within 100 miles of my house, I don’t think I could sacrifice common foods such as wheat. The 100 mile diet is a great idea but not without sacrifices.
