Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus)
August 11, 2023
John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, Tinicum, Pennsylvania
Not a bird I've ever seen around here before. Apparently after breeding season along the coast, they are known to explore widely before heading to southern coastal waters for the winter.

BOTD: White-faced Ibis
Photo: Jeff Flinn
"Very similar to the Glossy Ibis, and mostly replaces it west of the Mississippi River, although the two species occur together in parts of the southeast. White-faced Ibises wander through the west during the warmer months, and they may quickly find and take advantage of temporary new habitat after rains or flooding. Even their nesting sites often change from year to year with changes in local water levels."

The scientific name of the Glossy Ibis is Plegadis falcinellus This is derived from Ancient Greek plegados and Latin, falcis, both meaning "sickle" and referring to the distinctive shape of the bill. This photograph was taken in Camargue National Park, France.

The colors on this bird point that he was in full plumage attracting a mate. This is a glossy Ibis in a display of full plumage colors. The glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is a water bird in the order Pelecaniformes and the ibis and spoonbill family. Glossy ibises feed in very shallow water and nest in freshwater or brackish wetlands with tall dense stands of emergent vegetation such as reeds, papyrus or rushes) and low trees or bushes. They show a preference for marshes at the margins of lakes and rivers but can also be found at lagoons, flood-plains, wet meadows, swamps, reservoirs, sewage ponds, paddies and irrigated farmland.
